Pardeep Singh DardiKreeri

The residents of Dardpora, a remote village of Baramulla are up in arms against the Roads and Buildings (R&B) department for its failure to repair the dilapidated roads in the area. Locals allege that the link road of Dardpora to Kreeri is in a worst condition. They allege that the roads need macadamization, with authorities taking no pains in macadamizing the road and-not even in no mood to f ill the potholes.

“The roads in the area are in completely di-lapidated condition. The entire stretch from Dardpora to Kreeri is in a total mess,” the resi-dents of the area told The Varmul Post adding that the potholed road was causing huge incon-venience to the frequent commuters.

Due to the pathetic road condition, the trans-porters in the area are mulling to stop their service. “The transporters say that their vehicles were suffering extensive damages due to the bad roads, resulting in manifold increase to their annual maintenance cost,” said Abdul Majeed, a driver who plies from Dardpora to Kreeri on a daily basis.

According to locals the link road of Dard-pora to Kreeri was macadamized some ten years ago, after that nobody cared to repair or mac-adamize this road. The locals allege that due to the potholed road, it takes them more time to reach Kreeri and other parts of the district. The school children and office goers are the worst hit besides creating a lot of problems for the patients.

In spite of repeated representations to the off icials of the Roads and Buildings Depart-ment, locals said that the road has not been repaired for the past many years.

“Our road and bridge looks as it has been constructed during stone age. During election times many a leaders visited our village and promised us that they will solve this problem and repair our link roads but after election they turned mute regarding the issue,” a resident of Dardpora and a retired headmas-ter Ghulam Qadar Shad told The Varmul

post. Not only this during the monsoons, the locals

reportedly face more problems due to the di-lapidated roads.

“In rainy days we face more diff iculties. The potholes create nuisance and at times a threat to the life as school going kids are the worst hit, said President GPC, Dardpora S.Chanan Singh Sasan, adding the road was damaged during winters when the authorities used JCB machines instead of snow cutter machines to clear snow from roads.

“My humble request to the concerned Honor ‘able Minister Mr. Altaf Bukhari to look into the matter and help in minimizing the problems faced by Sikhs and Muslims of village Dard-pora and its adjoining villages.

Meanwhile the residents said that the bridge of the village Dardpora over Nallah Farasthar is also in bad conditions. The bridge was com-pleted in year 2008, but hasn’t been macadamized. People of this area face great hardships while crossing this bridge especially in rainy days when water gets accumulated on the bridge cre-ating problems for the locals.

“Six years ago, this bridge was constructed by R&B department, with the cost of half a crores but till date the bridge is totally incomplete in all respects. The bridge is without f inishing , coloring, not even macadamized and no one has inaugurated it yet” the locals told to The Varmul Post.

However, despite several attempts we couldn’t contact the concern officials regarding the prob-lems faced by the people of Dardpora.

ADNAN DARSOPORE With only few days left to Eid-Ul-Fitr, markets and shopping centers

in Sopore have come alive. Sopore was f looded with people as residents came out in large numbers to shop for Eid likely to be celebrated on Sat-urday. The festive fever seems to have gripped the people ahead of Eid-Ul-Fitr as shops in the market were crowded with the shoppers buying variety of items. Bakeries, confectionaries and toy shops witnessed heavy rush of customers as Muslims started preparing for the two-day Eid festival. Shopping outlets dealing with clothing including kids-wear, perfumes and footwear also saw brisk sales from early in the morning. The ready-made cloth showrooms also witnessed a huge rush with people purchasing new clothes for their children.

“On the day of Eid, we wear new clothes and offer congregational prayers,” Said Arfat Suhail. Hajar Adnan a customer at a shop in Iqbal market said, “Children are excited for Eid because they get to buy all the stuff of their choice whether it is new clothes or toys. You have to keep them happy. It is a indeed kids day”.

As the festival of Eid comes closer, the stalls of beautifully designed colorful bangles, Jewellery and Henna in the market of Sopore have been set up which are attracting female customers. Most of teenagers rush towards henna stalls to embellish their hands before the arrival of Eid-ul-Fitr. A number of vendors and shopkeepers have displayed Eid acces-sories particularly the Bangles and Jewellery in the major markets of Sopore to attract customers. Buying Bangles, Jewellery and Henna is an essential part of Eid preparations for all women especially young girls and they consider their preparations incomplete without these things. Some beauty parlors have introduced combo packages on the eve of Eid and are offering various discounts to attract the customers. At bakery

stalls cakes, pastries, cookies and biscuits were selling in kilos. “I had placed my order with the baker a one week ago. Even after that,

I had to queue up this morning to get my ordered goods, “ said Sheikh Shafqat, a resident of Rahim Sab in Sopore. Butcher and poultry shops are also witnessing a huge rush. Tailoring shops in Sopore are franti-cally working to deliver their orders with only two days to go before Eid.

“We work from 9 am to 8 pm just to ensure that all the pending orders are completed,” said Abdullah. “Every year we experience this rush as Eid nears, but this year more customers approached us to make their Khandress and Kurta compared to the previous year.

“ However, some people complained that due to price hike they were unable to purchase items of their choice. The huge rush of vehicles on roads resulted in frequent traff ic jams near main Chowk Sopore. Serpen-tine queues were witnessed at ATM outlets and Banks. The administra-tion in Sopore monitors the prices and availability of goods in the markets. The administration wants to prevent monopolies which could be caused by shortages of commodities. The festival marking the end of the holy month of fasting is likely to be celebrated on Saturday. Muslims across the globe celebrate this festival with lots of enthusiasm.

Idarah Falah u Darien was established in Dec 1999. Basic aim behind establishment of Falah u Darien was to connect youth with Quran and help in their personality development which would ultimately lead to the development of society on Quranic ideals.

Falah u Darien had a humble beginning. It used to organise a weekly interaction programme which included Dars Quran, Dars Hadith, Seerah Suhaba and like. Besides in a month couple of Dars Qurans were organ-sied in mosques. In between Idarah continued to attract youth espe-cially the educated class towards itself.

In 2002, people at the helm of affairs in Idarah felt the need for estab-lishing a charitable wing that could meet the needs of the poor class of the society. It was with this noble intention that Al Mavineen was estab-lished with a meagre budget of Rs 38000/- It was decided that the f inan-cial needs of the various needy sections of the society.....poor families, orphans and widows, handicapped and those needing medical help, poor students , marraige cases of poor people and self employment cases of the needy people.....would be met put through this wing. And today thir-teen years down the line, Al Mavineen has taken the shape of Bait ul Maal of Varmul town, with annual budget of more than one crore and nine lacs. It is pertinet to mention here that on one average Mavineen provides monthly relief to more than 400 families of the town. Besides, youth associated with Idarah did their level best to help the f lood effected victims of Srinagar, Palhallan Ghat and Sonawari area. Idarah launched a full f ledged campaign for the f lood ef-fected people and in this process cre-ated special relief fund and distrib-uted relief worth more than one mil-lion rupees. Al Mavineen also orga-nises medical camps for the poor and down trodden sections of the society from time to time. Besides blood do-

nations camps are organised (on an average twice every year) in which so far hundreds of points have been donated.

As it was written in the beginning that main aim of Idarah is to con-nect people with Quran and help in thr personal and collective develpment of the society. In this regard, Idarah has been trying to inculcate a habit in people to understand the message of Quran. In this regard, Ida-rah organises almost 100 Dars Qurans on an average in a month in the various mosques of Varmul town. People associated with Idarah strong-ly feel mosques aren’t mere places of worship for muslims but their main centres of societal activities. That is why besides, dars qurans people assocaied with Idarah run quranic darsgahs associated with mosques. Right now more than fifteen such schools of the town are working under a centrally established syllabus and scheme of the Idarah. Besides, Idarah frequently organizes regional confrences for both gents as well as ladies. Keeping in view the personality development of the youth, Idarah on and off organises workshops and seminaries on varied issues.Falah u Darien has recently established a research centre by the name Al Quran Research centre. It is hoped that this research centre will go a long way in the meetingsome of the intellectual demands of our society.

Idarah has also been running a career councelling cell and a Nikah councelling cell. Besides this, Idarah launched a monthly urdu magazine by the name, Tazkeer....few years back. This magazine has been work-ing as a spokesperson of Idarah and reaches to almost all localitis of the town besides other important towns of the valley.

In crux the basic aim behind the varied activities which Idarah carries out is to earn the blessings of Allah and help in the development of the society on Quranic principles.

The attempt at establishing a

Guinness/Limca world record by

holding the longest Iftar party

for “orphans” truly conveys the

present “Orphaned” status of the

state of Kashmir!

Bymohammad ashr af

An event management group in collaboration with the State Tourism Department organised the longest Iftar party for Kashmiri orphans on the Boulevard along the fa-mous Dal Lake which is practically in throes of death! Apart from the fact that the event highlighted the orphans of conf lict in Kashmir which at present according to some estimatesnumber more than two hundred thousand be-cause of the upheaval of nineties, it also demonstrated nu-merous other “orphaned” aspects of the once so called

“Paradise on Earth”! To begin with, one can take the Dal Lake around which the event was held. The famous Lake is not only the main attraction of the capital city of Srinagar but is in reality the heart of Kashmir. The Lake is totally orphaned. It is dying and may not last long. No one is real-ly concerned. There is lot of pinning about the state of the Lake but no substantial productive work. The efforts so far are keeping it on a ventilator and not curing its real dis-ease which is the encroachment by one and all, within and all round it!

Asia’s second largest sweet water lake, Wular, is in a worse condition. All other water bodies are dying and vir-tually orphaned. Same status is of the River Jhelum, the historical lifeline of Kashmir. It has been continuously washing the sins of the perpetrators of Kashmir and the last disastrous f lood was its angry outburst. It has been vandalised and encroached all along its embankments. The rulers have not had the time to cleanse it of the silt and mud for almost a year now. They are still debating and dis-cussing the proposals but the River is not going to wait and may strike once more with deadly ferocity! In fact, the entire environment of the state is facing the worst kind of degradation witnessed ever during its long history. The forest cover has been denuded at an alarming rate. Unscru-pulous timber smugglers with the connivance of authori-ties have massacred the young and budding forests of Kashmir. One of the causes of the last year’s f lood has been massive soil erosion in the catchment areas. The rains have a quick run off giving rise to f lash f loods. Soil is not in a position to fully absorb the water due to its denuding.

Going beyond environment, all other aspects also ap-pear “orphaned”! Be it the rehabilitation of the last year’s f lood sufferers or the restoration of infrastructure. A con-tradictory ruling set up which is an unnatural combination of the North and the South Pole has not been so far fully successful in getting the grip of the situation at the ground level. They seem to be suffering from a paralysis induced by the political and ideological contradictions.

Same is the situation on the larger political canvass re-garding the future political set up of the “Disputed” State. United Nations which had taken upon itself the resolution of the more than half a century old political problem has virtually washed off its hands from any future interven-tion. The western powers which were so much clamouring about Kashmir and Kashmiris few decades back too have withdrawn and left the fate of the territory and the “Or-phaned” people inhabiting it to the whims and fancies of its two warring neighbours. The height of irony is the role of the World Bank which brokered a treaty between the two countries over the waters of a “Disputed” territory without even bothering about its inhabitants and leaving them pe-rennially in an “Orphaned” state of total darkness!

The organisers of the event would have inadvertently done a good turn if their global media coverage draws the attention of the world to the totally “Orphaned” state of Kashmir and its people!

“O rp haned” Kashmir!

On 14th March,2014 Farhat Ahmad Dar, 20 years old boy from a poor family was shot dead by ‘security forces’ at a Naidkhai. Farhat, a resident of village Shahgund, Naidkhai of Bandipora district was on his way to offer Maghrib prayers where he was killed by forces outside the mosque. His father Ghulam Rasool Dar, a farmer by profession is a devastated man now, whose only hope was his son, Farhat. Dar family sees no reason to live but to wait for killers of Farhat to be nabbed and punished.

Army fired indiscriminately on Farhat Dar when every-thing around was calm said an eye witness Sajad Gul. Farhat was the only hope of his family who due to family problems left his education. In order to improve the conditions of his family, Farhat worked as a la-borer in his locality.

More than one year has passed since Farhat was killed, the investigation report is yet to come from government. Terming the magisterial inquiry as an eye wash and putting salt on the wounds of victims family, uncle of deceased, Ghulam Hassan dar, alleges that history of Kashmir is a witness that not a single armed personnel was punished till date.

After strong protests from people of his town and adjacent areas of Bandipora against the killing of youth by security forc-es, the government ordered sev-eral probes but till date no one was punished. Dar family with a hope that the killers of Farhat would be nabbed and punished according to the rule of the state, still knock at the doors of offi-cials and human rights organiza-tions. Hope is still alive and so are they.
