Co-President Elect’s Pen

Happy New Year!

Chris and I hope that you had wonderful holidays with

your family and friends. Thank you to Sabina Zafar for

graciously hosting the holiday potluck for our members.

It is hard to believe that another year has passed and we

are almost in 2019. As always, we have a busy year

planned, starting with a program on January 12, Hands-On

personal help with social media. Be sure to read about it

on page 4 in this newsletter.

Thank you to Sherri Hedman for getting more update on

how to help our fellow members from the Paradise, CA

Membership Matters

Happy New Year to all of our fellow San Ramon branch

members! We enjoyed seeing and visiting with so many

members and guests at our December social hosted by

Sabina Zafar and Linda Mendonsa. We had 31 members

and guests, including a prospective member, attend the fun

and delicious potluck dinner at Sabina’s beautiful home.

It was a festive way to begin the holiday season!

Inviting guests and prospective members to our many

programs and events is a very successful way to attract

new members to our organization. Please be aware of the

following information for any prospective member:

Any prospective member who joins on the spot at a

program or event that is also open to the public can

take advantage of the “Shape the Future Campaign,”

which offers 50% off national dues for the first year.

Also, new members joining after March 15, 2019 will

have membership through June 2020 (April, May, and

June will be free).

We are very pleased to welcome our newest member, Jo

Anne Barron, to our San Ramon AAUW. Margo James

met Jo Anne at the San Ramon Library Foundation’s Book

Sale, explained AAUW’s missions, and invited her to

attend some Interest Groups. Jo Anne has been attending

some of the Interest Group gatherings already, so please

welcome her as you meet.

Happy New Year! Looking forward to seeing you at our

upcoming programs!

Birthplace and other places I’ve lived:

I was born at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (my Dad was a

captain in the Army) and I have also lived in Saratoga,

New York; Gasparilla Island, Florida; Jackson Hole,

Wyoming; and San Francisco, California.

Bachelor of Science, University at Buffalo. Majors:

Finance and Management Information Systems. Minor in

International Business

Spouse:

Sean Gann – happily married since July 4, 1998

Children:

Riley (14-year-old son in the 8th grade at Charlotte Wood

Middle School)

Sydney (12-year-old daughter in the 6th grade at Charlotte

Wood Middle School)

Significant Mentor or Hero:

Bob Kharazmi, CFO, The Ritz Carlton Hotel Company

Current and Previous Employment:

Previous career: Software consultant (1995–2002) in

Stock Option and Stock Purchase Tracking Software

Current career: Realtor with Compass (2002 to present);

previously with J. Rockcliff for 7 years and Berkshire

Hathaway for 2.5 years

Current Interests and Pastimes:

-Helping my friends and clients find their place in the

world through real estate.

-I spend as much time as possible with my family—

traveling, cooking, reading, playing sports, etc.

-Volunteering at the schools and sports teams my kids are

involved with.

Memorable Experiences/Adventures/Accomplishments:

Life is an adventure every day with my amazing husband

and best friend, Sean! He keeps things interesting! And of

course there is rarely a dull moment with my two beautiful

children!

I have lived all over the country, on my own, which was a

wonderful experience in my 20s.

I have become successful within different careers—I think

life is so interesting, so I wanted to experience different

types of work. However, I have found my passion in real

estate. My recent accomplishment was being named #1

Agent for Berkshire Hathaway in 2016. In 2017, I built a

team of agents and we were named #2 in the company.

This success afforded me the opportunity to be recruited to

such a dynamic and innovative company as Compass.

Something that might surprise people:

I love to occasionally see a movie alone!

Public Policy

AAUW Public Policy Updates

Content for this article comes from various

communications sent by AAUW CA and AAUW National.

In early December, we have continued to prepare for the

arrival of the new Congress. A record number of women

will be sworn in January and many won by running on

issues that are AAUW priorities. We are using this unique

moment, along with the upcoming 10th anniversary of the

Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in January, to work with our

allies on the Hill to position swift movement on another

critical pay equity bill—the Paycheck Fairness Act. This

bill would provide long-overdue updates to the Equal Pay

Act of 1963 to give women new tools to close the pay gap.

This is an exciting time, and your action will be essential

to advancing this bill. So, after celebrating the New Year,

get ready to join us in putting our all into this legislative

opportunity!

Congress Passes Bill to Address Sexual Harassment in Legislative Workforce

On Thursday, December 13, the House and Senate

unanimously passed a bipartisan bill that changes the way

sexual harassment is addressed in the legislative

workforce. The bill, which reforms the Congressional

Accountability Act of 1995, eliminates the problematic

counseling, mediation, and “cooling off” periods required

under the previous law. While the original version of the

bill introduced in the House held members of Congress

financially liable for both harassment and discrimination

settlements, the final bill only holds members liable for

harassment settlements. The bill also increases

transparency by requiring an annual public report of

awards and settlements for instances of harassment and

provides additional support for legislative branch

employees, including a dedicated advocate. AAUW

supports equitable climates free of harassment and has

urged Congress to take action on improving the process by

which workplace discrimination, including sexual

harassment, is addressed in the legislative workforce.

Time to Update AAUW California Public Policy Priorities

Our Public Policy priorities guide all actions that relate to

public policy issues, including our action on legislation.

Our priorities are reviewed and revised every two years.

This is the year to initiate the review and revision for

2019–2021. The Public Policy Committee would like to

engage as many members as possible in discussing the

revision and contributing suggestions.

In 2017, AAUW CA used a branch discussion model to do

this work. Reports showed that good discussions occurred.

This year, they are repeating this process, asking each

branch to put the current public policy priorities on the

branch agenda for review and discussion. The discussion

will determine if our branch wants to continue the current

priorities, delete any of them, or change any of them. We

may also wish to recommend a new priority. Every branch

is welcome to participate.

Based on the input, the Public Policy Committee will

develop proposed priorities for 2019–2021 and submit

them to the members for a vote in the spring on 2019. The

resulting document will be published in a brochure and

posted on the state website.

The branch will receive a form for reporting the outcome

of the discussion. The deadline for returning the

completed form is January 30, 2019. Look for future

communication on this topic. You can find the current

2017–2019 Public Policy Priorities on the AAUW

California website.

A DAY OF SERVICE

Sponsored by the Dublin/San Ramon Women's Club (DSRWC)

The DSRWC will host a Community Day of Service on Monday, January 21, 2019 (Martin Luther King, Jr.

Day) at the Shannon Park and Community Center (11600 Shannon Avenue, Dublin). Hours are from 10:00

A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

We are inviting all organizations and members of the community to join us for a day of service. Following are

several ways you can help:

We will have sewing machines to make soft seatbelt holders that go over a seatbelt to alleviate the

pressure it puts on surviving cancer patients while driving.

Join us in writing letters to our people in the armed services and letters of hope to cancer patients.

Supplies will be provided.

We will be cutting and tying blankets to give to children at the Bay Area Crisis Center, Shepherd’s

Gate, and Tri Valley Haven.

We will be collecting food (non-perishable items only, please) for the Children's Emergency Food

Bank.

We’ll collect and/or make items for Operation Smile, which provides items to give to children who are

hospitalized for surgery on cleft palates: They need little baby dolls, baby rattles, child's toothbrushes

and travel-size toothpaste, children's puzzles, little coloring books with 8-pack crayons, and soft foam

rubber balls. We also will be making little gowns and armbands for the children. Patterns, material,

and machines available that day.

We need gently used purses (called Purses of Hope) that we’ll fill with cosmetics and other personal

items for women—socks, underwear, simple jewelry, and the like. We give them to women who are

homeless or have incurred the wrath of fire or hurricanes, etc.

Bring with you new or very gently used Dr. Seuss books for children who do not have books.

You can also bring items that we can send to men and women in our armed services who are stationed

overseas.

The goal of our international organization—GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUBS (with clubs in

all 50 states and in foreign countries)—on this day is to complete 1,000 projects. If you have a project you

would like to share with us, please feel free to do so.

Please join us for an hour or two to help us complete many of the services that the DSRWC provides. Or, if

you would care to make a donation for any of the projects, it would be gratefully accepted. The DSRWC is a

501 (c)(3) organization.

If you have questions or need additional information, contact Carol Lopez Lucey at 925-785-3395 or

[email protected]

You also can visit our website at dsrwc.org. Hope to see you on January 21st.
