Bella’s Beauty, A Heritage Humane Society Love StoryBy Robin Barret Bledsoe

Bella’s story is one of adoption and unconditional love. She came into my life in anunexpected way. As the interim executive director for the Heritage Humane Society, I had agood idea of what would be expected of me, managing day-to-day activities and working with aprofessional staff and compassionate, caring volunteers. I am used to this scenario as I haveworked in the nonprofit world for years. What I was not expecting was to meet a little LhasaApso named Bella, who would eventually steal my heart.

Bella was brought in one morning in a cage, dirty, and terrified. She had curly hair and wasin need of a good bath and grooming. With all the hair, her eyes were hard to see. A wagging tailwas evident and something about her- I can’t tell you what it was- touched my heart. Bella was placed in a roomykennel with a clean bed, food and water. I thought if I had Bella groomed she would be more appealing to potential adopters soI brought her home with me for the night before taking her to my groomer the next day. While spending the night with me, Bellasurprised me by jumping in bed and sleeping next to me as if she had done it for years. When I picked her up the next day atthe groomers, she looked like a different dog. Bella was BEAUTIFUL! Her face was angelic and sweet and mischievous, all inone. How could anyone have given this beauty up? Once back at HHS, I witnessed a dog with newfound confidence andenergy. I placed her back in her kennel in anticipation of all the potential adopters. What I was not expecting was the feeling Ihad when I walked away, knowing Bella may find her new family soon. Throughout the week Bella would bark and before Irealized it I was going to her kennel, checking on her, walking her and basically falling in love with her. With this realization Iadopted her. Adopting an animal is a funny thing! I thought I picked Bella when in reality Bella picked me. Bella has broughtan amazing love and companionship into my life, and I am so appreciative to HHS for the care and housing the programprovided her and all our animals.

Bella’s story is not atypical to those of the other dogs and cats that HHS takes in, feeds and cares for. Animals arebrought to HHS for a variety of reasons; some of them too painful and cruel to write about and others an unfortunate sign ofthe times and the poor economy. Can you imagine having to choose between feeding your family and feeding a beloved pet? Most of us would say it is an easy choice; of course, our family comes first. But, what if that pet is your family? I have seenthis dilemma first hand and, contrary to what I thought, it is not an easy choice. Parting with your pet because you can nolonger afford to feed it is heartbreaking. Even more heartbreaking is the confusion the pet experiences.

During 2009 HHS took in 1744 animals. Thankfully, these animals have a safe, clean, and welcoming place to staywhile we search for their new adoptive families. Last year alone HHS facilitated successful adoptions for 1054 animals. Inorder to maintain quality services and a professional staff, HHS relies on a number of resources but primarily communitydonations. Your donation will help us feed, house and care for numerous “Bellas” as they wait for new families. Thehuman-animal bond is a strong one and, given the right circumstances, can be life changing. Please support Heritage HumaneSociety with a donation today. You quite possibly could change a life.
