FESTIVALS OF OUR FAITH-PASSOVER AND EASTER
By Cantor Thom King
On a sunny March afternoon last year, my wife Shazy and I did what millionsof people all over the world do on Sundays — we put on our best clothes, packed our kids into the car, and went to church.
Although itʼs a perfectly normal activity for many families, for the Cantor of oneof the largest synagogues in Maryland it was a somewhat unusual occurrence. Butwe had a very special reason for taking this unaccustomed step: we were participat-ing in a unique concert that celebrated the similarities — and differences — of tworeligious faiths.
First, a little background. Over the past few years I have become friendly withPastor Charles Sembly, the spiritual leader of Union Bethel AME Church inRandallstown. Through my participation in their annual interfaith commemoration ofthe birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Representing the Jewish community at thisevent made me keenly aware of the need for more understanding and communica-tion between the African-American and Jewish communities, and that the only wayto achieve this goal was through interaction. Of course, the mode of interaction thatappealed most directly to me was music, and so Pastor Sembly and I agreed toarrange a joint concert for the following spring. The concert, involving the Beth ElAdult & Childrenʼs Choirs (assisted by the incredibly talented Bruce Eicher) joiningtogether with Union Bethelʼs magnificent musicians, was an enormous success.Everyone in attendance left with the feeling that they had not only learned some-thing about someone elseʼs faith, but a little bit about their own, as well.
One of the most moving parts of the afternoon was how incredibly welcome wewere made to feel by the entire Union Bethel community. They were the most gra-cious hosts imaginable, from the corsages and boutonnieres that were pinned onevery one of us, to the delicious refreshments offered after the music was over, andthe spirit of goodwill and mutual respect that filled the building (a former synagogue,by the way); a spirit that stayed with us all long after the concert was over.
Now, itʼs time for us to return the compliment. On Sunday, March 25th, at 4:00p.m., Beth El will be hosting Pastor Charles Sembly and the Union Bethel AMEChurch in “Festivals of Our Faith II: Easter and Passover.” Both of our religiousinstitutions will be presenting music which expresses our own faith tradition, joyfully, respectfully, and unapologetically. Wouldnʼt it be a kiddush hashem — a sanctifica-tion of G-dʼs name — if all of Beth El and Bethel came together in the spirit of thepsalmist who exclaimed: “Hinei ma tov umanayim shevet achim gam yachad —How good and how pleasant it is when brothers and sisters can live together in har-mony!” What a wonderful way to welcome this season of Godʼs promise of release, restoration and renewal!

This past fall, our blood drive was again very successful. Almost 100people participated and we collected 79 pints of blood.
Those who came to donate, whether they were successful in doing soor not, did a HUGE Mitzvah! We also had more administrative staff andclergy donate than ever before.
Our volunteers, many of whom alsodonated blood, are the best! Withoutthem and our maintenance staff thingswould not have gone as smoothly as theydid. Also thanks to the kitchen staff forfeeding the volunteers and Red Crossstaff.
The next Beth El blood drive ison Wednesday, April 18. When the RedCross calls you just say you are giving atBeth El.
Again, to all who participated in the blood drive, in whatever way,Thank You! See you on April 18.

“A CHANUKAH TOREMEMBER”
By Joanne Block Rief, D.D.S. and Erika Rief
On Chanukah, we place chanukiahs in our windows as a pub-lic symbol of the miracles that G-d performed for the Jewishpeople in the time of the Greeks. In our Jewish enclave of
Baltimore, that idea seems a bit ridiculous since almost everyone isfamiliar with the holiday. It wasnʼt until this Chanukah that we reallyfelt pride in what the chanukiah represents.
On December 21, we left Baltimore and ventured to theGalapagos Islands on a dental mission with 27 others. Without priorexperience and unfamiliar with our travel companions, we really didnot know what to expect. As the sun set on our first night together,we pulled out our travel chanukiah, candles, and gelt. Still unfamiliarwith the members of our group, we figured that we would be theonly ones interested in celebrating Chanukah. As we began to lightthe match, Gabe, a surgeon currently working in southern Georgiawho happened to be on our trip, asked us to wait a second. Hewent to his room and returned with his Kippah and siddur. Sureenough, he was a Hungarian Jew who davens every morning.
For the next seven nights, he led us while we lit the candles, said the blessings, and sang Maoz Tzor. Watching the candles ofthe chanukiah burn in a place far away from Baltimore, or anywhereremotely Jewish, we really felt the effect those candles can have. Not only were we able to perform the mitzvah, but we also sharedthe miracle with the non-Jews on our trip and local Galapagonianswho had never seen a chanukiah before. They were mesmerized bythe sight of us lighting and singing and thanked us for includingthem in our holiday celebration.

Mitzvot that Made a DifferenceBy Jill Eisen
In December, The Berman-Lipavsky Religious School learned the meaningof Gemilut Hasidim and Mitzvah Hiddur. The students practiced by doingacts of loving kindness. They decorated 500 bags for Community Mitzvah
Day on December 25. The Jewish Volunteer Connection (JVC) filled the bagswith hand-made scarves and hats and distributed them to the homeless. Theschool was also invited to participate in Mitzvah Day and to take part inMoveable Feasts with the Beth El Social Action Committee.
Chavurah Chadasha A and B, Chavurah Howard County, Roland Park andFederal Hill also got into the spirit by making a point of thanking people whomatter to the community. Each group did a little something different. In theRoland Park Hebrew School, the students bought a gift for children participat-ing in the Marine Corp charity Toys for Tots. Each child made the gift personalby attaching a handwritten note. They also made rice krispy treats and deliv-ered the dessert to the Fire Company Engine 44 along with cards thanking themen and women. In the Federal Hill School, the students chose to thank theBaltimore City Police. Major Barillaro and Office Glazerman came to the class-room and received latkas, cookies and cards that compared our modern dayheroes with our biblical ones.
Chavurah A and B and the Howard County Chavurah baked cookies, muffins and brownies and prepared thank you cards for their local fire depart-ments. During the baking they had a session about Mitzvot and read a shortstory related to Mitzvot.
It was a really good experience for all. The firemen and policemen werewelcoming, kind, gracious and touched. The students felt good about them-selves and that they were appreciated for their good deed.

This photo is of a new class that we offer for 4 year old chil-dren. This experience has welcomed 15 new students to ourprogram. Morah Lital is teaching Jewish stories, holidays, arts and crafts, and basic prayer. To my knowledge, there isno other program that offers this type of experience to suchyoung children. They will automatically be enrolled into ourkindergarten program for next fall. This outreach effort hasproven to be a successful and positive boost to our enroll-ment.

THE SCOOPFROM THE SOCIAL ACTION
COMMITTEE!
Debbie Caplan and Jeanette Davis organized our annualChristmas Day Moveable Feast deliveries. Approximately80 Beth El volunteers delivered food and gifts in Baltimore
City and surrounding counties to people living with HIV/Aids andbreast cancer.
Ellen Budish arranged for members of the Social Action com-mittee to provide food, presents and gift cards for two familiesidentified through Baltimore County Social Services. The fooddrive was so successful that we were able to deliver the extra foodto the Reisterstown Crisis Center. We plan to adopt families for thePassover/Easter holiday and invite any other Beth El memberswho would like to participate in helping those in need to join us.
Mark Rome, Paul Sheitel and Barbara Foreman delivereddonuts and sodas to 19 police and fire stations in the Northwestcorridor. Thanks to the generosity of Beth Elʼs Michael Klein ofKleinʼs ShopRite Supermarket for donating the donuts and CocaCola Enterprises for the sodas. This year end tradition thanksthese public servants for important service to the community.Dinner was served at Hope Lodge on Christmas Day.

PUBLISHING HONORS
During the Summer of 2011, Dr. Eyal Bor and Morah Jill Eisen sub-mitted an article on where they see Hebrew School headed in thefuture. Morah Eisen also submitted an article about her philosophy
of Jewish education. The articles were among 8,000 submissions byJewish educators throughout the United States, Canada and Israel. Weare proud to report that their articles were two of twenty-four chosen for e-publishing in the Jewish Educator Volume 2. Dr. Bor and Morah Eisenalso presented their ideas at the NewCAJE Conference at AmericanHebrew Academy, Greensboro, NC last August. Their seminar was metwith enthusiasm and with requests for their information to be sent to theparticipants. Below is one of the two articles Dr. Bor and Morah Eisenwrote together. The April issue of the Voice will feature Morah Eisenʼs arti-cle that was published on Jewish Community and Meaning.
A CHANGING VISION LEADS TO BRIGHTER FUTURE
By Eyal Bor and Jill Eisen
The role of being an educator has changed. No longer is it just aboutwriting the finest curriculum, offering engaging lesson plans, and providinginspiring teacher development. Our focus is now diverted to reaching outto unaffiliated families and fundraising.
Throughout the country, we have seen a trend where families lost theneed, desire or ability to be a part of mainstream Judaism and have cho-sen not to affiliate with synagogues or religious schools.1 As a result, thefuture of our Hebrew schools is in peril. Funding for Jewish education isscarce, causing those in the profession to lose their jobs or reevaluatecareers where they do not see a future. Registration plummets afterBar/Bat Mitzvah as the desire to continue in Jewish education is no longera priority.2 Something must be done to reverse this disturbing trend andregain interest in Jewish education. The structure of religious school mustbecome flexible and convenient for families. The content must be tailoredto meet the personal needs of the students, whether the child is from aninterfaith family, has learning challenges or is advanced in Hebrew com-munication. We have made it our mission to make our religious schoolBaltimore, MD strong, interactive, and prosperous.
Being Jewish is not something that you can buy in a store. There areno waiting lists to become Jewish; rather it is a heritage; a religion; a wayof living your life filled with pride, honor and values. At Beth ElCongregation, faculty, school committee members, lay leaders, parents, and students put their heads together to figure out how to make Jewisheducation relevant in this complicated and fast paced society.
We started with the hypothesis that if families have positive experi-ences in their Judaism, in and out of the synagogue or classroom, theywill strengthen and enjoy their Jewish identity and their ties to the congre-gation. We took Jewish education beyond the Hebrew school and put itback in the family home and the neighborhood.
Over five years, our religious school has evolved to be flexible, con-venient, and personal to meet the needs of our families. We worked withthe Jemicy School in Baltimore to learn how to educate students withdyslexia and related language-based learning differences. The director ofthe Jemicy School led professional workshops to train our faculty and pro-vide them with tools that enable them to teach these students withoutfrustration or obstruction due to their learning challenges. As a bonus, allof our students benefited from this training in multi-sensory and hands-onmethods.
Next, we took an ancient concept and gave it a new twist. The pro-gram called Chavurah Chadasha (pioneers in group learning) deepensthe family understanding and appreciation of Judaism through intimate, intense, interactive learning. Families formed a traditional chavurah, butused an innovative format that led to full participation in learning how tolead a Jewish life. The goal was to eliminate the boredom of repetitionand recitation that often occurs in the classroom and to make the compo-nents of Judaism (Hebrew reading, praying, Holidays, mitzvot, etc.) excit-ing, refreshing, and relevant. Families took a journey that deepened their

understanding and appreciation of Judaism and gave them Jewish learn-ing and experiences on a personal level and not just on a school level.Parents took an active role in their own religious growth and a participato-ry role in their childrenʼs Jewish education. Families participated in month-ly Shabbat dinners, Shabbat services, and Tikkun Olam projects.Chavurah Chadasha made our large institution intimate and easily man-ageable. It showed that Beth El, no matter how large (1750 families), hasroom for smaller groups, while, at the same time, offering members thebig programs they enjoy.
The Chavurah Chadasha program, now in its fifth year, has three dif-ferent groups, including the original families, and has laid the ground workfor additional programs. Families in neighborhoods nearly 30 miles fromour synagogue asked for an easier way to obtain a Jewish education fortheir children that did not involve a forty-five minutes commute in stand-still traffic. This led to the Hebrew School in Your Neighborhood program. In Howard County, we combined Chavurah Chadasha with a satelliteschool. Students, ages 5 – 13, meet in a home on Thursday afternoonsand come to the congregation on Sunday mornings to join the other

SPRING 2012 CULTURAL TRIPS
Chavurah students. These families have younger children, so their needsare slightly different than families in the other chavurot. They enjoy bookclubs, play dates, Shabbat dinners, and holiday celebrations together.Downtown Baltimore families, the majority of whom are interfaith, request-ed a weekday-only Hebrew school. They meet in a museum, also onThursday afternoons. Students walk to the site. They appreciate the cre-ative, interactive, hands-on, and personalized attention the studentsreceive in class. In two years, the downtown satellite location has doubledin size. We plan to open a second location, as well as a three- and four-year-old class this Fall.
There are not enough families 30 miles north of our congregation toopen a satellite school or start a chavurah, so we created a unique pro-gram to fit their needs. These students attend religious school only onSunday mornings. They have had no prior Jewish education and do nothave Jewish friends. The first important element was to introduce them toa community of peers. The next step was to help them catch up to theirclassmates so they did not feel behind or out of place. Following the regu-lar class on Sunday, these students stayed 45 minutes longer to betutored in Hebrew reading and Judaics. We are glad to report these stu-dents flourished in their end of year program and were looking forward toattending next year.
The lessons we learned from our various education models is that wemust think out of the box, listen carefully to the needs of the families, andnot be afraid to do the unexpected. By developing these smaller Jewishcommunities, we are helping families maintain their Jewish identities andare empowering them to practice Judaism.

GOGREEN!
1) Set your homeʼs thermostat lower, even simply a fewdegrees will help out. You will scarcely perceive a differ-ence, and this will nonetheless have a major effect onwhat you pay for electrical power each day.
2) Try the innovative “eco-friendly” light bulbs – theenergy you save can considerably reduce your carbonfootprint. Youʼll not simply use a reduced amount of power, but these bulbs are brighter and last longer.
3) Wrap your hot water tank inside a well-insulatedcover. It sounds comical, but you can genuinely diminishyour carbon footprint by reducing the quantity of electricityyou need to use to maintain your hot water tankʼs temper-ature.
4) Seek ecologically friendly cleaning supplies. Youʼdbe surprised at the conclusive impact on maintaining thepurity of our ecosystem that doing just a few easy, littlethings can have.
5) Recycling, even after all these years, is nonethelessone of the most important things you can achieve.

On Saturday, January 7 the Reisterstown American Legion Ridersand Post members went to Perry Point VA Medical Center for theiryearly Holiday party. We handed out hats, scarfs, walker bags, lap
blankets, afghans and blankets to all the Vets that were in attendance. Weincluded a gift of large print word search puzzle books, as well as, holidaycards the children in the Beth El Pre-School made by hand. The Vetswere emotional when they received the cards.
Project W.A.V.E. is always in need of items for the Vets when we visitPerry Point and Loch Raven VA Medical Centers. We try to make two vis-its a year to each facility. At this time I have an excessive amount of lapblankets, but am in desperate need of hats, scarfs, afghans and blankets. You can drop off your donations for Project W.A.V.E. at the front desk orcontact Dora Smith at [email protected].
I would like to extend a thank you to all of the people who have donat-ed items to Project W.A.V.E. with a special thank you to the Beth El PreSchool children and staff for the cards. We could not do this without yourgenerosity.

T’FILAH TEAM TAKES THESHOW ON THE ROAD!
By Becky Gordon
The Tʼfilah Team (TT) recently broke new ground. In addition toleading prayers at Beth El Shabbat services, serving as role mod-els for their fellow students and polishing their Hebrew reading
skills, theyʼve now made their mark on the greater Jewish community. OnDecember 18, they presented back-to-back performances for the resi-dents of the Woodholme Gardens and Tudor Heights Assisted LivingFacilities. They delighted the seniors with an eclectic mix of traditionaland contemporary Chanukah songs.
Tʼfilah Teamsters introduced each song, explaining the significanceand some of the Hebrew words. The audience sang along with familiartunes, such as Maoz Tzur, Sevivon and Chanukah and delighted to thehumorous lyrics of Debbie Friedmanʼs Latka Song and the Israeli classic,Banu Choschech, in which the children formed a “human Chanukiah!”Songs were augmented with choreography, rhythm instruments and excit-ing props. The children then introduced themselves to the audience, shar-ing their favorite pastimes.
A highlight of the evening came after the performances, when eachchild presented residents with cards made by Religious School studentsand wrapped Chanukah presents. The TT families were so generous intheir gift purchases, that each senior received multiple gifts.
The Tʼfilah Team performed a beautiful mitzvah and experienced thepower of selflessly giving to others, at a time when so many are primarilyfocused on receiving. The ever-quotable Robert Rosenberg summed it upnicely as he came to replenish his supply of gifts to hand out, when heexclaimed “I feel so good about this!” Kol ha kavod to the Tʼfilah Teamand to their families.

WE COUNT, EACH & EVERYONE ONE OF USBy Rabbi Steven Schwartz
Of all the books of the Bible, I often feel that the one book that most relates to who we areJewishly is the book of Esther that we read on Purim. Of course Genesis tells us aboutthe first Jews, Abraham and Sarah, and the beginning of our tradition. And Exodus
reminds us of the central story of Judaism, the Exodus story. But it is the Book of Esther thatspeaks to us in terms of our contemporary Jewish lives like no other biblical book.
First of all, it teaches us something about where responsibility for Jewish continuity lies in adiaspora community — and the message of Esther is that it lies with the individual Jew. If youare in the diaspora, by definition you are in the minority, by definition the state is not a Jewishstate, and therefore the state will not play a role in Jewish continuity. In fact as we see in thestory of Esther the state may threaten or hinder transmission of the tradition from one generationto the next. And so it becomes the responsibility of the individual Jew, through the choicesmade in his or her life, to transmit the tradition.
Imagine, for example, if Mordecai had not stepped forward to talk to Esther about herresponsibility as a Jew, and then if Esther had not decided to try her best to fulfill that responsi-bility — it is possible that the entire Jewish community of ancient Persia would have been wipedout. Remember at first Esther was resistant to this idea. She said “Uncle Mordecai, I donʼt wantto get involved with this — it is not my problem.” But in the end she does what she needs todo. And the choice that she makes as an individual to engage in Jewish life and claim herJewish identity is what saves the Jewish people.
And that leads me to the other message for us from the book of Esther, which is this: therole that the secular Jewish community plays in preserving Judaism is as important and maybeeven more important than the role played by the traditional community. Esther is without ques-tion the most secular book of the Bible. First of all, it is the only book of the Bible where Godʼsname is never mentioned. It is clear that the Jews in Esther donʼt keep kosher — after all, Esthereats in the palace. Did you think there is a kosher kitchen there? And maybe most interesting —when Esther decides she is going to talk to the king, she asks Mordecai to tell the Jews ofShushan to fast for three days, and she says sheʼll fast for three days — but what about pray-ing? Wouldnʼt you think she would pray and ask the Jews in her community to pray for her. But itnever occurs to her, either because she doesnʼt know how to pray, like many of us, or shedoesnʼt feel comfortable doing it, or she doesnʼt think it will be effective.
The truth is Mordecai and Esther are totally secular Jews. Even their names, that we think ofthem as Jewish names, are names that only fully assimilated Jews would use. Scholars tell usthat Mordecaiʼs name comes from the Babylonian god Marduk, and Estherʼs name comes fromthe Babylonian goddess Ishtar! And so the message of Esther is that the secular Jews, theassimilated Jews — in other words the Jews like you and me — are the ones in the end whosave the Jewish community.
We are still doing it today. If not for the liberal Jewish community, Judaism would long agohave become an isolated faith tradition that is uninvolved with the greater world — with Godʼsgreater world. As we celebrate Purim this year, lets remember that we count, each and everyoneone of us, and that we all have a role to play in determining what the future of Jewish life will belike. Lets take that role seriously, and fulfill it to the very best of our ability. Hag Sameich!
