Bury College are currently running a question and answer campaign for high school students to help encourage them to ask any questions they have, whether that be about their application, interview, starting college or have a course specific question.Students can submit a question to us by contacting us through our social media channels or they can send their question to [email protected] and one of our experienced members of staff will aim to answer their question as soon as possible.
Now the football season has started again, I would like to focus on one of our favourite and most popular authors in the library, Tom Palmer. His books are well loved amongst students who enjoy reading about sport, mainly football and rugby. He has also written books that are set during the war and in other countries.
His website is well worth a visit, with the first chapters of lots of his books that you can try, videos of him reading from his books and tips on writing.

KS3 TimetableFollowing the Government’s announcement on the 10th May 2020 we have taken the decision to adapt the way that we set work for students. In response to parental and student feedback we will be streamlining the timetable to ensure that the students receive a high-quality education.
Remember, it is important that are students are sticking to a daily routine, maintaining some form of exercise, and making time for reading all of which will have significant benefits to mental health and wellbeing.
Year 9
Following feedback from parents and students we have taken the decision to adapt the way that we set work for Y10 students. We are working towards implementing the updated timetable below over the next two weeks. This will mean that students will have daily pre-recorded lessons, where teachers will record themselves explaining new knowledge or skills. These sessions will be uploaded to Google Classroom and the timetable below gives a suggestion as to when pupils should complete them. Students will then be able to use the pre-recorded lessons as a supportive tool when completing their work. Teachers will also be available in a live streaming session, for students to drop into, to answer any questions that students post, or give feedback on work that has been submitted, students will receive information from their subject teacher as to when their live sessions will start. Students do not need to attend these sessions for the whole hour. We will be using Google Classroom for all of these interactions, which pupils have access to through their school email. To effectively safeguard staff and students, initially students will not be seen on screen and can only type their questions into Google Classroom. Even though the timetable below shows all GCSE option subjects students are only expected to complete work from the subjects they study. Please note changes to geography and I-media/Music times.
Timetable for 10
Therefore, on Monday a student’s day might be;
9.30am Watch the pre-recorded English lesson and complete the tasks set.
10am Drop in for ten minutes to the live streaming Citizenship session to get feedback from the RESPECT department and then spend time improving their work.
10.30am break
11.00am Drop in for fifteen minutes to the live streaming Maths Foundation session to ask the Maths department questions and then spend time completing their work.
11.45 Watch Health and Social Care’s pre-recorded video and complete the tasks.
12.30 Lunch
1pm Drop in for 5 minutes to ask questions about Health and Fitness work with the PE department, then complete the tasks.

I hope you had a good week last week. I thought it would be important to provide another weekly update of other ways in which you can work to maintain your physical and mental health. There is hopefully a light at the end of the tunnel with lockdown rules being slightly relaxed.
This weeks challenges-
1) The PE department have created an Instagram page. This will be regularly updated each week, with a variety of different videos and activities to follow. We also want to upload excellent work and sporting achievements completed by you, if you have achieved anything your are proud of, or completed any excellent work then let me know. The Instagram page is wardleacademype.
3) The youth sport trust has a range of challenges which allows you to 'compete against yourself', with a focus on perseverance and the aim is to achieve bronze, silver or gold medals for each activity. There is a range of activity cards and videos.

2) Check Doddle to see the latest home task, the 7 day fitness challenge. Complete one of these tables everyday. Each day you should see an improvement on the previous day. Complete each exercise until you physically cannot do anymore repetitions. The repetitions however must be consecutive (immediately after each other). Please send me through your scores. Mr Baugh loves reading about lots of different periods in history- especially those that contain a fair amount of blood, guts and gore!
“With a little extra time on my hands I've re-read some of my favourite history books- for example Dan Jones 'The Plantagenets- The Kings who made England'. This book covers many of the key topics we study in Year 7 - the murder of Thomas Becket, King John and the Magna Carta, the Black Death and the Peasants Revolt.”
And I've just started reading a book about the Vietnam War- an event I really like teaching at GCSE!!
Lockdown tales from the History team.
I've managed to keep myself busy! I've dedicated a lot of time to running and I've managed to increase by distance to 20k which is just short of a half marathon! I've also been writing a 'Corona Diary' which I've been sharing with my form and included pictures of my world travels to remind us all that there is a whole world to look forward to after lockdown!
I've read a couple of books including: A History of the world by Andrew Marr and The Irresistible inheritance of Wilberforce by Paul Torday and, like many people, have pretty much watched every series on Netflix! I've managed to set up a really good workspace which has had an incredibly positive impact on my productivity. I'd also like to introduce 'Ben', my new Bonsai tree - it gives me something to do! I look forward to seeing you all very soon - take care!

The lockdown experience so far has been bizarre and unlike anything I have experienced before in my working life. It has been strange to be working from home and to not actually see the faces of students in my classes. I have really missed this even more than I expected and it has reminded me how lucky I am to have a job that has so much positive human interaction.
As well as teaching remotely I have also been homeschooling my own children and this has actually been a really positive experience as I have got to know them as learners and not just as my children (No NUHOPEs required....yet!). Being on lockdown has also given me an opportunity to read more. So far I have read Manchester Man and Victorian London (see ppt slide for images) No surprise to see that these are both history books! On a final note, I cannot wait to see you all back in school and for the normality of life to resume.

Lockdown tales from the History team.
I've been busy in my spare time - I've tried my hand as a barber, running (although I keep (obviously) meeting horses on the bridleway which slows me down) and reading. When I'm not giving terrible haircuts, I've got books going on medieval crime and punishment (about as much blood as I was expecting) and life in Tudor England (less blood than I was expecting!). Missing you all, and really pleased with the quality of the work I've been getting from you.
Even though I love structure and routine I've found that the current situation has helped me reconnect with the most important people in my life, my family. I've always phoned my mum and dad weekly to talk about the brilliant experiences I have had at Wardle. My extended family is harder to keep connected with, it's usually twice a year if we're lucky! However, since lockdown we've been doing a weekly quiz and it's been really nice to talk to people who know me really well and who I can be myself with.
Even better has been seeing my sister (virtually of course) every week, because even though she has had to delay her wedding, she has been pregnant and it's given us both the chance to talk about the things that really matter to us and how children can develop into strong, independent and resilient individuals. She was a little shocked when Meredith was born last Sunday, as she was a week early, but all the preparation she has done over the past months will ensure that she grows into a happy, healthy child.
If nothing else, lockdown has reminded us that our children are our main priority and that through all the hard work we do to try and ensure their future, sometimes something will come along to surprise us and mean we need to adapt. Again though, this isn't a bad thing, as it models for our children how to be resilient and overcome adversity.

People Power Saved Chester Zoo!
On Monday 15th June, we were extremely happy to see that Chester Zoo had reopened it’s gates. Just a week before, the zoo had put out a plea to the public to support its fundraising campaign saying it was fighting for its future amid spiralling debts brought on by the enforced closure. A crowdfunding page for the Chester site raised £2.5m after zoo officials warned the pandemic could leave it facing a year-end debt of £24m.
Visitor numbers at the 128-acre Cheshire site are currently limited to 3,000 capacity, compared with admissions of 20,000 on a busy day.
Chester Zoo, which covers a 128-acre site, is one of the largest zoos in the country and is home to more than 35,000 animals from more than 500 of the world's rarest species.
Two million people visited the attraction in 2019, which gets 97% of its income from visitors and costs £1.5m a month to run.
The zoo owner explained, "We are already £5m down so far this year and even when we open on Monday we will be opening on controlled capacity of around 3,000 people a day - a fifth of our normal capacity.
"It's going to take us a long, long, time to recover."
