The Waverley Retirement Activities Group (WRAG) began in April 1974 and is the ‘umbrella
organisation’ for over 35 leisure Activity Groups for the ‘over 50s’ living in and around the
Monash / Glen Waverley area in Melbourne. We are a non-profit, community-based
organisation with about 350 members run by volunteers with support from the Monash City
Council. Our Activity Groups meet in Council halls, public places and private homes. We
help you meet new friends and make retirement fun.
AGM Guest speaker:
Chris Miller has kindly consented to present an information session on the life of Sir John Monash. Chris is a local resident and NHW Zone Leader who has studied the life of Sir John
Monash for over 50 years. His interest in Sir John first arose when he chose him as the
subject of a high school assignment on a famous person.

WRAG Newsletter
President’s Corner Hi all,
Another “busy” quarter behind us.
And, yep, another year rushed past.
Before I go any further, it almost goes without saying that I wish each and everyone of you all the
very best for 2016 and beyond. May this year be all you want it to be and more.
Briefly going over the last quarter;
Mick Brasher gave us a magnificent insight into the birds found in the Australian bush with, not
only, some fantastic slides depicting the birds, but also their particular whistling sounds. An
experience greatly enjoyed by all in attendance.
Next came the Melbourne Cup tradition of Dot’s picnic at the Glen Waverley Northern Reserve.
This is another one of our favourites which was well attended and a great time was had by all.
Thanks go out to two of our members namely my dear wife and Elsie Rhodes who, together very
nicely, kept the show on the road. The results are elsewhere in the newsletter.
Lastly onto the Xmas gathering, although not as well attended as it might have been, the people
present informed me they had a great time. (How could you not enjoy the very tasty smorgasbord
meal and the appropriately dated songs performed ‘live’ by the very experienced three piece
band.) Heather Beatty, hubby Max, as well as Erica Johnson were very much instrumental in
making things happen and my thanks goes out to them.
To things that unfortunately sometimes comes with ageing;
Our very long standing Tuesday walk and lunch club organiser Wally Cavill, presented with a
Senior of the Year award by the Mayor of Monash in 2014, is now incapacitated by severe loss of
short term memory. Wally attended the Tuesday walkers Christmas function, by courtesy of his
daughter Linda, where Greame expressed our sincere thanks for his not inconsiderable past
efforts.
Hereby, once again, THANK YOU WALLY.
Pam King has kindly taken on the task of ‘leading the charge’ of the walkers so to speak.
Bruce Ohlsen has been kind enough to schedule the lunch club venues.
Thanks to you both.
In closing this is my last ‘Presidents Corner’ and I thank you all for your past friendship.
Looking forward to seeing you at the February meeting and other planned activities;
Your friend and President
Helmut <><>

NOVEMBER QUARTERLY MEETING:
After the useual formalities i.e. business matters such as secretary and treasurer
reports etc. we were graced with the presence of Mick Brasher who gave us a
magnificent insight into the birds found in the Australian bush with, not only,
some fantastic slides depicting the birds, but also their particular whistling
sounds. An experience greatly enjoyed by all in attendance.
Part of the presentation, of interest was the way the birds were shown on the
screen and clicking on same produced the whisling sound of said bird.
-------------------------------------------- A police recruit was asked during an exam, 'What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?' He answered, 'Call for backup.' -------------------------------------------- A brain walks into a bar and says, "I'll have a pint of beer please." The bartender looks at him and says, "Sorry, I can't serve you." "Why not?" asks the brain. "You're already out of your head." -------------------------------------------- A group of junior-level executives were participating in a management training program. The seminar leader pounded home his point about the need to make decisions and take action on these decisions. For instance," he said, "if you had five frogs on a log and three of them decided to jump, how many frogs would you have left on the log?" The answers from the group were unanimous: "Two." "Wrong," replied the speaker, "there would still be five because there is a difference between deciding to jump and jumping." --------------------------------------------
