MAKE-A-WISH GREATER VIRGINIA

At the April Fashion Show and Luncheon, you will have the opportunity to make a tax deductible gift to Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia. We hope the story of Jordyn on the next page will inspire you. We will collect checks made out directly to the charity, then will deliver the checks right after the luncheon. As always, cash is welcome as well. If you are not coming to the luncheon on April 12, and would like to make a tax deductible donation, you are welcome to mail checks payable to Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia to Cathy Buttner, 11 Chapaqua Drive, Richmond, VA 23229. Thank you so much to all of our generous members for your support of our charity this year.

CHARITY NOMINATIONS 2017-2018

It is almost time to think about choosing a new charity for the 2017 - 2018 club year. If you would like to nominate a favorite charity, you must fill out the Charity Nomination form, which can be found on the NV website. To be considered, a charity must meet the following criteria:

1. The charity must not promote a particular social, religious, or political viewpoint, in compliance with the club

by-laws, Article 3, Section 1.

2. The charity must qualify under Section 501(c)3 of the Federal Tax Code (proof required).

3. The charity must serve the Greater Richmond area.

4. The charity must not have presented a program to the New Virginians within the last full club year.

We would love to have you nominate your favorite charity.

A WORD FROM MAKE-A-WISH GREATER VIRGINIA

Jordyn’s Wish Transforms Her From Patient to Princess

Jordyn, a 6-year-old who has received multiple organ transplants, has always admired princesses. During one particularly long hospital stay, her medical team and nurses began referring to her as “Princess Jordyn,” a name Jordyn thought was quite fitting. When Make-A-Wish volunteers visited Jordyn to help determine her heartfelt wish, she knew right away that she wanted to be a princess and have a tea party. After a full morning of princess pampering, including getting her hair, nails, and makeup done, the time of her party was drawing near. She settled into the horse-drawn carriage for a ride around the grounds of The Founder’s Inn, before arriving at the front entrance. She stepped out of the carriage and several princesses joined her as she made her grand entrance. Jordyn grinned as the camera shutters clicked away as her guests greeted her. Inside, the room had been transformed to be a perfect fit for a princess tea party, with a beautiful cake, a violinist playing some of her favorite songs, tiered trays of finger sandwiches, and tables elegantly decorated for the occasion. Her smile was contagious as she spent time with each of her guests; she loved being the center of attention! Next to her at the head table sat her mom, and princesses surrounding her on each side. The tea party was drawing to a close, but not before Jordyn ensured each guest had a slice of the delicious cake that was adorned with a glittering tiara. A crowd gathered in two lines outside the entrance to Jordyn’s limo, and each guest cheering and blowing bubbles to make the end of Jordyn’s wish day as spectacular as possible. Jordyn’s princess tea party was simply enchanting. It was a day Jordyn won’t soon forget, and the memories she made with her mom by her side will be cherished forever.

Gari's paintings are in collections worldwide. The historic house at Gari Melcher Home and Studio possesses a rich history that dates back to the 1790's. The Melchers bought the house in 1916. Then, decades later, thousands of miles away in New York, there's an inescapable glance of recognition between two strangers. Providence is giving Lenka and Josef one more chance. From the glamorous ease of life in Prague before the Occupation, to the horrors of Nazi Europe, The Lost Wife explores the power of first love, the resilience of the human spirit- and the strength of memory.” [from GoodReads.com] We will meet on Tuesday, April 11th at 11:00 am at the Grapevine Restaurant at11055 Three Chopt Rd, Richmond, VA 23233. If you are not sure whether you can play, I will be happy to put you on our sub list and call if we have a cancellation. Please bring $1.00 for our bridge pot. The top three players will participate in the pot.

Bridge–Marathon:MonthlyPatDeutsch 794-7355 [email protected] 2/3 of the matches have been played, just a couple months left now. We’ve had 19 slams, and the scores are competitive. In one group, four teams are all within 400 points of each other, having played the same number of matches. One extra vulnerable game will pull one team away from the pack. Every extra trick counts! Two teams have already completed all of their matches.

Deadline: May 20. All matches must be completed by then and the score sheets sent to me within a day or two after that. No exceptions. Please plan ahead for those May matches.

Next year. If you want to join in the fun next year, please write a $10 check payable to New Virginians and mail it to me @ 14018 Shawhan Ct., Midlothian 23114. I do not assume that you are continuing in Marathon until I have your check. New Marathon players are more than welcome to join. You do need a partner, but if you don’t have one, I know there are other ladies who are looking for partners and we can facilitate that meet-up.

Year-end luncheon – June 7 @ Hermitage Country Club. (approx. 9am – 2pm) We play a little bridge, have some lunch and hand out prizes. All Marathon players are welcome, including new players who are signing up for next year. I will list the menu in the next Welcome Mat and begin taking reservations then.

Any questions, please call or write.

NovelWomen:3rdWednesdayofthemonthfrom10:00amBunnyvanderVeer 767-0328 [email protected] 507-0269 [email protected] We will meet on April 19th at 10:00 AM at Independence Golf Club, 600 Founders Bridge Blvd, Midlothian 23113 (804-601-8600). Our book this month is Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonsen. This is a story about the unlikely friendship between Major Pettigrew, a retired English soldier, and Mrs. Jasmina Ali, the Pakistani shopkeeper from the small English village of Edgecombe St. Mary. Major Pettigrew, a widower and pillar of the community, values all things proper: honor, duty and decorum until his life is changed by the developing friendship with Mrs. Ali. Drawn together by their shared love of literature and the loss of their respective spouses, they find friendship blossoming into something more. Join us to discuss the cast of hilarious and original townfolk and the risks of pursuing happiness in the face of differing cultures and traditions. Please be sure to RSVP to our hostess Mary Rose Gupton by email: [email protected] or call her at 804-897-5215 to let her know you can join us for the discussion and lunch. We hope to see you there!
