F E S T A ! F E S T A ! F E S T A ! From the Chair Welcome to the spring edition of ‘The Bugle’. We have struggled through a very long cold and cloudy winter with rainfall being just above average until October when somebody seemed to have turned the tap off. We have resurrected the Kennet to Wye Classic – a surf craft race. It was started in the late ’80 and ran for 4 years. The K-W Classic will become part of the annual calendar of surf events and is a way on honouring the surf club legends including Al Howie and Bob Anthony. The K-W Classic will be held on Sunday 14th December commencing at 10.30am. Three categories – paddle board, stand up board and other craft (skis etc). Rescue craft will accompany the race. The $25 entry fee includes a T shirt, 12 months membership of the Social Sporting Club (which provides insurance cover) and a certificate of participation. All profits will be shared by the Wye River and Kennet SLSClubs. Enter K-W Classic and pay online via our website: www.wksclub.com The WKS Festa is again being held over Melb Cup weekend, with lots of activities. The program is available on postcards from the Wye shop, pub, Big 4, Kafé Koala and Kennet Camp Ground. Activities include ‘Handmade’ art and craft exhibition at the CFA, Henley on Wye, BBQ, jumping castle and a band at the Wye pub. Unfortunately Harrington Park is in the same state it was 12 months ago. Even though council received a 75% mandate from ratepayers wanting the project to proceed, a few people have continued to denigrate it, with a particularly nasty email campaign, necessitating the mayor’s intervention. The recreation facility and community garden will become a fantastic asset for this community and we look forward to it being completed by the end of December. The Social & Sporting Club is an environmentally responsible organisation. Now that we have over 250 email addresses on the community list, The Bugle will be an electronic magazine and leave our precious trees standing. Wildlife

Please remember to leave ice cream containers of water out for koalas, especially at the base of their favourite trees. A koala on the ground all tucked up with its head down, is usually in trouble. If you see one like this, call Wildlife Vic – don’t wait for 2 or 3 days because you are reducing the likelihood of them surviving. The echidnas are active now it’s warmer. Leave water out for them and let them go about their business - gardening.

Another ‘find’ this year has been the Eastern Pygmy Possum. Three were discovered in torpor when a dead tree stump was removed. These tiny (weighing less than a Tim Tam) fella’s live on nectar, pollen, soft fruit and insects. They thrive in Banksia, Eucalyptus and Callistemon. What may appear to be a useless dead tree or stump is often an apartment building for animals.

REMEMBER Wildlife cant ring and tell us they are injured - but you can. If you find any injured wildlife, phone: Wildlife Vic 13000 94535 - www.wildlifevictoria.org.au

Yearling seals will begin appearing on our beaches from December to February. Although they are tired and hungry, unless they are injured, seals rarely need intervention. If you see a seal on the beach or rocks, sign out or not – don’t interfere with them. Most importantly, keep dogs and kids away from these animals.

We are discovering more sugar gliders in the area - Morley Ave, Harrington Park and a large colony between Koonya and Karingal Drv. A number were taken into care this year and all were successfully released. These exquisite little creatures live on nectar, tree sap, over rip fruit, insects and water. If you are revamping your garden, a selection of flowering native shrubs will help.

This years’ Easter fete raised $13,400. This money will go towards upgrading the Wye CFA’s 4WD first response vehicle and purchasing a much needed mid sized tanker. Running a country fire station is expensive, so come and support the CFA by donating good, clean items or purchasing them at the next Fete - Tuesday 6TH January 2015 from 10.00am

The Wye CFA is multi functional. Apart from the proscribed burn between Dunoon Rd and sep creek, the twenty plus call outs this year have included building fires, motor vehicle crashes and assisting ambulance officers to carry people out from bush walking tracks.

Get ready for summer: download the cfa’s ‘fire ready’ app and visit the cfa’s website – www.cfa.vic.gov.au

With increasing memberships and activities, the SLSC has outgrown its current building. Renovations to the clubhouse will include a kitchen and office. This has been possible through a grant from the Victorian Emergency Service + generous community support (the Tin Rattle in Jan netted $6,800. The completed building will provide a fantastic community venue.

The Community Plan Group [CPG] is an initiative of the Colac Otway Shire and Dept Planning and Community Development. The CPG is comprised of representatives from all local groups + 7 interested individuals.

The goal of the CPG (set by council) is to: coordinate the efforts of the community; maximise access to resources and funding; involve community groups and residents to contribute in developing the initiatives and priorities.

After a number of community meetings, priorities were identified and listed under the categories of: Community Events and Activities, Recreation and Leisure, Public Infrastructure, Environment, Fire Safety and Other. The initial priorities from these 6 categories were:

Community Plan Group Wye River and Separation Creek

Wye River and Separation Creek

Sep Creek Bridge has been a concern for many years – being the only safe pedestrian route between Sep and Wye. It was identified by the community as its number one priority in the Community Plan.

On 9 July, Federal member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson and Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs, accompanied by VicRoads Regional manager William Tieppo announced almost $4 million for the Sep Creek bridge upgrade including a pedestrian walkway. This grant is part of the $50million GOR upgrade.A number of locals were on hand to hear the announcement. ‘Thank You’ to all community members who have been a part of the campaign to secure funding for the Sep Creek bridge.

The Breathalyser purchased with a TAC grant is being well used. The GOR Safety brochure, also funded by the TAC will be distributed before the holiday season.

Almost 200 people attended the Anzac Day commemoration this year. Dallas Yulton conducted it with bugler ……..Long time resident 95 year old Dot Hutchins travelled from the Lorne Nursing Home to attend. A number of wreaths were laid on behalf of local organisations.

Two successful bottling’s this year:Peter Jacobs’ now famous, ‘Mad Dog’ Shiraz in October and Peter Mitchell and Sherryl Smiths’ ‘Blackberry Fizz’ in May. Both exceptionally fine vintages. Unfortunately a lot of the local blackberries have been sprayed so this may be a first and last vintage.

Fundraising

The Social & Sporting Club took the jumping castle to Lorne in March raising money for the Lorne Primary School. Everyone had a great time.

Vale

People

Sadly, 4 fine men have passed this year. Stuart McPhee (pictured), Paul Williams (Willow), Michael Abbott and George Moriarty. All contributed to our community in their own way – Michael through tourism, Willow having painted a many of our houses, George as Wye’s first CFA captain and Stuart as ‘the quiet achiever’.

Stu was a sought after and respected sound engineer in Australia’s music industry. He loved his cricket, CFA, Community Garden and above all, his family.

Our heartfelt condolences to Gill, Harry and Abby Williams, Jany and Lola McPhee, Stephanie Abbott, Roy, Helen, Jack and Tess Moriarty. All sadly missed.

Rebecca Barnard and friends will give a concert in February at Wye as a fundraiser for Lola’s education.

DogsA number of faithful companions crossed the rainbow bridge this year, including Gough Jacobs, Ollie Green and Gamba Smith. We welcome Occi Maly, Hobbit Green, Missy Cameron and Marco Shepherd into the community.

Community Round UpThe departure of Corinne and Peter Mitchell from our community has left a rather large hole, as they both held numerous positions within community organisations and contributed enormously. Corinne was very active in the local tourism group, the CFA ladies auxiliary, member of the old Foreshore Committee and latterly, a stalwart of the community garden.Peter was an active CFA member, also serving as secretary/treasurer and starting the Community volunteers Group. He was a keen bike rider (aka ‘lycra lizard’) as well as being involved with the SLSC and local tourism group. Peter continues to visit Apollo Bay regularly to play with his banjo group.

Wye SLSC member Michael Barrand does it again! In October Michael successfully defended his title at the Life Saving World Championships in Montpellier, France winning the one kilometre Masters race. He won the Masters run in Turin last year and Adelaide in 2012. Michael is a teacher at Colac Secondary College and organises the competition program at Wye River SLSC.

In July Damon Barbante spent 4 days in a neck brace at Geelong Hospital, after his car rolled off Wye Rd and flipped onto its roof. Great to hear he’s back in action.

Dot Hutchins celebrated her 94th birthday on Saturday 25 October in Wye River with her family.Glenda Cameron was hospitalised in early October with a recurrent back problem. Gerome competently took over the helm of Kafé Koala until Glenda’s return. She is now back in action making those award winning cakes, pies and pasties.

Moni and Gary Lewis have just returned from Turkey and Europe where they caught up with some of their kids en-route.

We will miss Neetim E’s food at the pub and Ollie’s smiling face behind the bar. As well as Harsha and Tom at the pub and Toby at the General.

Why are Mandy and Shane Farrely are grinning from ear to ear? They are prospective grandparents. Jayden and Sara are expecting in April.

We were sitting in the garden, shooting the breezeStu came and sat, and put us all at easeHe gazed at his favourite bay, with those gentle eyes There was no bullshit, no ifs or whens or whys

We reminisced about driving the FJ home, on the smell of our breathChanging the V Dub motor with nothing but a skateboard underneathGood music, good vodka, camaraderie and laconic truth

Always there to lend a hand, and give the garden a drinkSometimes cock-a-doodle, but often we shared pain with a winkThere is a rare inner strength, imbued on that youthful faceNo complaints or entreaties, his olive branch swept peace about the place
