Vision for Global Observing Systems in 2025
• WMO-CGMS response to GCOS Satellite Supplement in 2006 :the space-based GOS does not address all ECVs– ERB, Ozone, GHG, aerosols, Global precipitation – Sea level and sea state, Ocean colour– Vegetation, Glaciers and ice sheets
• Recommended to redefine its scope to encompass climate one main objective, in addition to weather
• This triggered a review of the GOS: both space AND surface components

Vision for Global Observing Systems in 2025
• Contents:– General themes and issues
•Response to user needs•Integration•Expansion•Automation•Consistency and homogeneity
– Surface-based component– Space-based component
• Approved by WMO EC, June 2009

Space-based component (1)
• Operational geostationary satellites • – at least 6 – each with: • Infra-red/visible multi-spectral imager• Infra-red hyper-spectral sounder• Lightning imager
• Operational polar-orbiting sun-synchronous satellites• - in 3 orbital planes – each with:• Infra-red/visible multi-spectral imager • Microwave sounder • Infra-red hyper-spectral sounder

WMO OMMSpace-based component (2)
• Additional operational missions in appropriate orbits:• Microwave imagers – precipitation, sea-ice, humidity, cloud …• Scatterometers – sea-surface wind, soil moisture• Radio occultation constellation – temperature/humidity profiles• Altimeter constellation – sea-surface height, sea level• Infra-red dual-view imager – sea surface temperature• Advanced visible/NIR imagers – ocean colour, vegetation• Visible/infra-red imager constellation – land-surface• Precipitation radars • Broad-band visible/IR radiometers – radiation budget• Atmospheric composition monitoring instruments• Synthetic aperture radar – waves, …

Space-based component (3)
• Operational pathfinders and technology demonstrators:• Doppler wind lidar – wind profiles• Low-frequency microwave radiometer – salinity, soil moisture• Microwave imager/sounder on geos - precipitation• Advanced imagers on geos• Imagers on high-inclination, elliptical orbits – High-latitude winds, volcanoes,
fires, sea-ice• Gravimetric sensors – water: lakes, rivers, ground
• Polar and geo platforms/instruments for space weather• for solar imagery, particle detection, electron density
GCOS-WMO Workshop, Geneva, 13-14 January 2011
WMO OMMApplications
• Operational meteorology – NWP– Nowcasting
• Climate monitoring• Operational oceanography – open ocean, coastal• Hydrology• Atmospheric composition
– Ozone layer monitoring, greenhouse gas monitoring, air quality monitoring• Space weather

The new EGOS-IP (1) Implementation Plan for the Evolution of Global Observing Systems
• Responds to:• The new Vision for Global Observing Systems in 2025• Outputs of Rolling Review of Requirements (RRR) process:
– User requirements– Statements of Guidance (gap analyses)– … for all application areas
• For climate monitoring:– GCOS URs, GCOS gap analysis and the new GCOS-IP

The new EGOS-IP (2)
• Original EGOS-IP approved by CBS in 2005• Annual updates - reviews of progress against actions
• Initial draft ready for review, January 2011• Input from stakeholders in CBS and beyond, 2011-2012• Aiming for approval by CBS in 2012• For space-based climate aspects, will be aligned with
the future “Architecture”
