The woman lived in a tall building as far from the sea as you can get. Round her were tall trees with leaves as big as dinner plates.

They soothed her tiny children and bathed her sleepless face.

... tall trees that by night swayed and ruffled in the wind. Sometimes she dreamed she could climb up and see over the trees to the far horizons.

She walked down to the vast river that cut the city in two. She climbed up a huge tower on the banks and searched. The city lay below. The sun began to set but there were no far horizons. She wanted to cut through to the hills beyond.

She used to walk up the hill near her building and oversee the view. Way in the distance she could spy even taller buildings and wooded hills - but no far horizons.

The sun began to set but there were no far horizons. She watched the birds and thought they knew where the far horizons were.

One day she saw a postcard on the mat from a friend on holiday. Now she knew this was her far horizon.

Now she knew where it was - where the sea met the sky.
