Mission Statement: To provide an active adult country club lifestyle for all homeowners with recreation, dining and entertainment activities, maintained and enhanced in a fiscally responsible manner. To provide a challenging, positive environment for all our employees encouraging them to become long term valued staff members.

A LETTER FROM THE HOASummer has arrived here in Arizona and the temperatures have heated up. This time of year is perfect for the completion of many different projects and major repairs. The Palo Verde roofing project has been completed along with the tennis ramada and it looks great! The Lapidary Room (while closed for three months) is undergoing a complete remodel. The new fountain at Cottonwood hole #18 will be installed in July, and many repairs are being made.

The rezone of the Cottonwood Complex should be complete by August. When that happens, construction will begin by converting existing tennis court #2 into four pickleball courts, and construction of one new tennis court as well. Originally, there were to have been two pickleball courts constructed to the south of court #1. However, the Board of Directors revisited the pre-approved location, and voted at its May meeting to rescind the prior approved vote of the pickle ball court location in order to proceed with the new proposed location.

The Board also approved having another homeowner vote for the site location of the new Administration Building. The vote will give our homeowners the choice of constructing the new building either on its present parking lot location or the newly purchased lot at the corner of Riggs Road and Robson Blvd. This vote will take place approximately the first of November when the majority of our residents return. This will allow our homeowners the opportunity to attend any workshops and informational meetings with regard to both site locations. If our homeowners choose the vacant lot, the Administration Building will be designed to be the anchor building at

HOA News…

that location and will guide the need for any future development.

Your Board of Directors and Management have been very active in trying to reduce the requested increase in rates from Pima Utility Company for water, wastewater and irrigation. Many of you responded to the Arizona Corporation Commission in protest of these rate increases and we thank you. Pima is still proposing an increase that in our opinion is still too high considering the very poor quality of irrigation water that we receive. A decision by the Arizona Corporation Commission is expected this fall.

It may sound like a cliché, but living in Cottonwood Palo Verde at Sun Lakes is like being on an extended holiday. One of the biggest draws of our community is the many amenities available to our residents. From our beautiful golf courses, recreational facilities, restaurants and other social activities, there are plenty of opportunities to be yourself as well as enjoy an active life style. We also live in one of the most financially sound HOAs in the Valley if not the country. Others have taken notice as well, with U.S. News and World Report ranking Sun Lakes, Arizona as one of the best places to retire in the country. The magazine awarded and recognized Sun Lakes for its excellence as a top retirement community nationally.

On behalf of your Board of Directors, thank you for allowing us to serve this wonderful community in which we live.

Kathy Skrei, PresidentCottonwood Palo Verde Board of Directors

In 1992 and 1993 Reader’s Digest’s New Choices for Retirement Living Magazine selected Sun Lakes from approximately 3,000 other retirement communities across the United States as one of the top 20 retirement places to live in this country.

In 2012 U.S. News & Business Report again ranked Sun Lakes, Arizona, as one of the best places to retire in the country stating that Sun Lakes is nationally recognized for providing residents with luxury, resort-style amenities,

stunning landscaping and active adult neighbors.

Both magazines spent months of research before making their selections and took into account climate, availability of activities, proximity to airport and health care facilities and recreational areas and amenities and the surprisingly reasonable cost of ownership.

As Sun Lakes’ homeowners, we are extremely proud of our community and very happy to call it home.

At the April 25, 2012 Board of Directors Meeting, Palo Verde homeowner, Jean Luchtel, presented the Board with a generous donation to the Voluntary Contribution Fund in the amount of $2,000.00 in memory of her husband, Dutch. This donation has been allocated toward the beautiful fountain located at the entrance of the Palo Verde Clubhouse. Jean has always been active in this community and continues to be so. She is presently a member of the Cottonwood Palo Verde New Friends Ambassador program, a team of CWPV homeowners who give tours to new homeowners.

Jean, thank for your generosity and your continuing contributions of service to the CWPV community!

The Voluntary Contribution Fund was established November 2007, to enable Cottonwood Palo Verde homeowners and others to make voluntary, non-tax deductible, monetary gifts of any value for the benefit of Cottonwood Palo Verde. Palo Verde Road Management, Inc.

Palo Verde Road Management, Inc. was formed in December 1991, and final incorporation occurred in January 1992. Palo Verde Road Management, Inc. is a Private Non-Profit Organization and its initial purpose was to act for and on behalf of the Sun Lakes units 20, 23, 24, 25 and 26 Management Associations who had responsibility for maintenance of the roads in their respective units.

On January 1, 1996 units 20, 23, 24, 25 and 26 Management Associations and Palo Verde Road Management, Inc. merged with Palo Verde Road Management, Inc. being the corporation surviving the merger. The Palo Verde roads were deeded to Palo Verde Road Management, Inc. on October 23, 1998. Palo Verde Road Management, Inc. operates under the revised homeowner approved bylaws, dated June 10, 2004.

Palo Verde Road Management, Inc. is staffed by nine (9) Palo Verde residents. Openings on the board, when they occur, are advertised in the homeowners news media. Candidates are interviewed and selections to fill vacancies are approved by a majority vote of the remaining board members in accordance with the bylaws.

Palo Verde has 11.3 miles of roads and each year the streets are surveyed by the road engineering members of the board along with a consultant road engineer to determine our road maintenance requirements for the coming year(s). Our current plan is to slurry seal all primary streets (3.1 miles) in May 2012 [completed]; slurry seal all secondary streets (3.1 miles) and master seal all cul-de-sacs (1.4 miles) in May 2013, slurry seal all feeder streets (3.7 miles) in May 2014.

Some additional maintenance, such as crack filling, skin patching and minor remove and replace may be required during the time period of May 2012 through May 2015. Also, it is expected that fine reflective cracking will appear on the slurry sealed surfaces as the material ages. Seal coating, crack filling, etc. will be applied, if and as required, providing eight to ten years of good surfaces.

During the two year period, May 2012 through May 2014, we will spend more than our annual assessment accrues, but the following four to five years should provide a substantial increase to our reserves.

Golf News…

Although the summer brought extreme heat and high humidity, both Cottonwood and Palo Verde ran many exciting events. On July 1st, Cottonwood ran its annual Firecracker Open. Palo Verde’s Men’s Club Annual Summer League is an ongoing success! Golfers from Ironwood, Sunbird, and Sun Lakes Country Club participated in a four man 2 best ball format. Some great events to look forward to before the summer ends are the Annual Couples CottonVerde Tournament September 7th which involves playing nine holes at Cottonwood and nine holes at Palo Verde. Twilite Couples at Cottonwood and Palo Verde have been extremely well attended despite the oppressive heat. Culminating the Twilite couples will be our “Grand Finale” Annual Nite-Lite Golf Tournaments at both golf courses, which always brings a spectacular end to the summer golf season. Cottonwood will host their Nite-Lite Golf Event Wednesday, September 26th and Palo Verde will host their event Thursday, September 27th.

The CTC is 280 members strong with men outnumbering the ladies, 161 to 119. Recently members were asked to com-plete a 20-question survey and turn it in with their annual dues; the response rate of returned questionnaires was approximately 30%.

Although the returned surveys might be more indicative of people who like to complete questionnaires than of the membership in total, some interesting trends did emerge. The following was learned from those responding: the age range for men was 54 to 87 with the average being 79 years. Female respondents tended to be younger with an age range of 43 to 80 and an average of 64. The average age for taking up tennis was 34 for men and 37 for women although one male respondent was 74 when he took up tennis and one of the ladies did not play tennis until she was 65.

The overwhelming majority of CTC members gave their club a big “thumbs up”. When asked, “What do you like best about your club?” the 78 respondents gave over 123 highly enthusiastic comments. The majority of members wrote “great friends and wonderful people”, followed by “great orga-nized activities by member volunteers”. A few direct quotes include, “It’s the greatest thing that happened to my wife and me when we moved to Cottonwood”, “In my 70 years, I have belonged to many clubs, none as well run or as worthwhile as the CTC” and “It is an important reason why we are so enthused about living in Sun Lakes”.

Who are the Members of the Cottonwood Tennis Club?

Tennis News…

Submitted by Roberta Arpan

Several other questions also elicited overwhelmingly one sided responses: the vast majority affirm their tennis has improved with their participation in the club, practically every respondent believe their tennis would improve with improved overall fitness and the food served during tournaments and socials received an A+. “A better serve” was the most popu-lar response to “In what way would you like to improve your tennis?” In responding to the question, “In what areas could CTC improve?” the majority of the respondents left the space blank or gave a favorable comment.

When asked about their pet peeves on the tennis court, the most popular response was “bad line calls”; however, three claimed, “the net is higher on their side than their opponents’ side” and one cheerfully declared the sun was her pet peeve! The Wilson racket was the most popular brand with 25 fans, followed by the Prince with 20 devotees. The Head racket and Weed racket came in third and fourth places.

Other responses indicated the majority of members believe the most important thing about tennis is to have fun and not take the game too seriously. That said, it is noted that about half of the respondents reported pulled muscles, knee injuries or tennis elbow as a result of their play.

When asked to rate the importance of tennis is their lives, the largest number of respondents indicated a high level of inter-est (giving it a 4 on a scale from 1 to 5). However, according to this survey, the typical tennis player also has several other hobbies including golf, bridge (or other cards), hiking/walking, bicycling and reading.

While numerous tennis club members call somewhere in the Midwest their home, Canadians were well represented and

Colorado was the single state most often cited where club members either have a second home or call it their home state.

A big thank you goes out to all who took the time to complete this sur-vey. Although it was impossible to include every remark in this article, all comments were given to CTC President, Al Wagner, who along with other members of the Board of Directors will give each suggestion careful consideration.

Dog Agility Demonstration Coming to Sun LakesSaturday, January 12, 2013

Sun Lakers love their dogs. We all want our pets to be physically fit but wonder how we can achieve this goal while having fun. The answer is Dog Agility. Agility is an exciting sport that emphasizes the ability of handlers and dogs working together maneuvering between, around and through many different obstacles. This

is a unique way of teaching basic obedience, having fun, staying healthy and developing a very close bond with your dog. As an added bonus, age, physical handicaps, such as using a wheelchair, doesn’t inhibit you from participating.

I discovered this sport when I took my dog Candy to the local dog park. On her own she went through the tunnels

and over the jumps. We enrolled in the Good Dog Agility Club beginner’s class over 8 years ago and have never stopped participating. Candy, like many of us, has become a senior and competes in the Veteran’s class at Master Level.

Because Sun Lakes is an active community we have many residents participating in this sport. Our dogs come from various backgrounds: rescues, pounds, and private

purchase. Good Dog Agility is a non-profit organization that emphasis positive interaction between a handler and their dog. Fall classes will begin at the latter part of September at the Pomeroy Elementary School, Chandler.

Please take a few minutes and check-out our web-site: www.gooddog.org.

The Fastest Growing Sport with the Funny Name:

Pickleball

In October, 2008, Sun Lakes joined many other locales in providing its residents a new exciting sport with the goofy name of Pickleball. It was created in 1965, in the state of Washington by a family named the Pritchard’s. They were looking for a game that the whole family could play and enjoy. Popular rumor has it that it was named after the family’s dog, Pickles, who continually retrieved the game ball and hid it during play. Another spin on the origin of the name was that it came from Joan Pritchard who remarked that it reminded her of the “Pickleboat Crew”. This salty version is where oarsmen were chosen from the remaining leftovers from the other boats, therefore comprising the crew of the Pickleboat.

In early times the game was played on driveways, residential dead end streets and in backyards. Nowadays, Pickleball is played on a badminton sized court with a net lowered to

34”. Some say it is a cross between ping pong, tennis and racquetball. It is played with a perforated plastic ball, similar to a baseball sized whiffle ball, and wood or composite paddles. The game is easy to learn and beginners can play almost immediately. It can also be a rigorous, fast paced game as there can be much play at the net requiring quick reaction time. Many experienced

By Karen Iovin, Publicity

players of other sports come to Pickleball thinking it will be a breeze but finish the first day with a new found respect for it.

The sport has become extremely popular in retirement communities and is usually played in doubles, therefore using a lot less movement than tradition racquet sports such as tennis. All levels of play are provided in Sun Lakes.

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America. In 2008 in Sun Lakes, Pickleball began with portable nets and taped boundary lines on a Cottonwood tennis court. As numbers grew, the Sun Lakes Pickleball Club was established. Currently there are two temporary courts lined on the parking lot in Palo Verde’s Sisk Park. Two permanent courts will be built soon.

The Sun Lakes Pickleball Club hosts and participates in local tournaments with other active adult communities. Players have the opportunity to participate in Club Leagues as well. The professional organization for Pickleball, the USAPA, also sponsors many tournaments in the area and throughout the country. Our club has many participants in these tournaments who consistently bring home gold and silver medals.

SLPC welcomes new members who can enjoy a level of play suited to their skill. It is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy fun and socialization with others. For more information, please contact [email protected].

Community News…CENTENARIAN JOIE de VIVRE

Along with state of Arizona, Elizabeth Lawson is celebrating her Centennial Year!

In 1990, having always loved Arizona and been frequent visitors, she and her husband James retired and moved to Sun Lakes from Rancho Bernardo, CA, where they owned and ran a health care supply business for 25 years. They chose Sun Lakes (in spite of once trying and failing to find it!) over Sun City because of what they felt were the superior location, architecture and amenities. One of Elizabeth’s most cherished ‘treasures’ is a bouquet of Arizona cotton bolls that James gathered for her just prior to their move to Sun Lakes.

Elizabeth has led an active life here playing bridge, entertaining (she still loves to cook), and, most especially, dancing. She, James and their daughter Roslyn hit the dance floor once or twice a week at any one of the five Sun Lakes community clubs. And they go on a cruise every year…more dancing!

Some of the things that she most appreciates about

the community are the friendships she has made, the wonderful cross-section of people from all walks of life, the broad range of amenities and activities, and the fact that the community continually works to update and improve itself.

Asked if she had any longevity advice for the ‘younger’ set, she said, “be curious, stay interested, positive, and hang-out with friends”.

Elizabeth is enthusiastic, vital and engaged with living every day with a smile…. “The longer I live, the more I love it!”

And that is centenarian Joie de Vivre.

Neighbors Who Care Will Unroll New Services and Partnership Opportunities in the FallBy Carol Bowers, Volunteer Services Coordinator

Because of the outstanding volunteer services provided by Neighbors Who Care, our friends and neighbors in Sun Lakes and South Chandler are given the opportunity to remain independent and in their own homes much longer than might otherwise be possible. The cooler weather welcomes snowbirds back to communities and neighborhoods and volunteer opportunities galore. A need that has been identified by many aging people is the ability to make informed and confident decisions about home repairs and other services. Neighbors Who Care will be expanding the Business Assistance service to include Advocacy services. Advocacy will allow individuals to call on someone to be the extra pair of eyes and ears when getting estimates or inquiring about work that may or may be needed to their home. This program is still in the developmental stage and volunteers who would specifically like to help in this area should contact the NWC office at 480-895-7133.

NWC has partnered with the AARP Driver Safety Program and will be offering classes the second Tuesday each month. Class sizes are limited and advanced registration is necessary. Classes will be held at the NWC office at 10450 E Riggs Rd Ste 113, 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm. Fees are $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-AARP members. The driver safety certificate is required for NWC volunteers who drive the Van and recommended for all volunteers who provide transportation.

Most insurance companies recognize the value of this and offer discounts to individuals who complete the class.

Look for the roll out of a new program (Friends of Neighbors Who Care) where the business and individuals who support us will be able to connect their name with NWC in a win-win for us all. Name association and recognition is a key component to success. When you or your company is recognized for its connection to NWC and NWC’s connection to you or your company, not only do we hold one another accountable to provide the best service to our neighbors, but gain the pride that comes with association with fine people.

New volunteer training begins again in September on the fourth Thursday of each month at 1:00 pm at the NWC office. Your time and gifts shared with our neighbors will be gratefully appreciated. Please check out our website for our monthly calendar and current newsletter at www.neighborswhocare.com. You may register for upcoming training or individual training meetings by calling 480-895-7133, a volunteer will be happy to help you.

Welcome back to the valley and the sun!

RECOGNIZE THESE PEOPLE?Cottonwood Palo Verde History Project

If you were here in 1995, you’d recognize these five people as being members of the first all homeowner Board of Directors of Phase II (as we called it in those days).

We had just taken over ownership and operation of the community from Robson Marketing which represented a great challenge and opportunity for the new Board and the community as a whole.

The Communications Committee spent almost a year chronicling the highlights of our history, starting with the year 1993 when we were still owned and operated by Robson Marketing. We’ve covered the important things that happened each year since: names of Board members (including 1995) and General Managers, homeowner dues, golf memberships and lots of other events and activities.

If you have any interest in learning about the developments and achievements of the great community you live in, go to our website. Here’s how you do it. Use your computer or other communications device and access www.cottonwoodpaloverde.com. On the Home Page scroll down and click on “About Us”. You’ll see the “History of Cottonwood Palo Verde” link -fascinating reading!

The Communications Committee has been charged with the responsibility of keeping this History of Cottonwood Palo Verde up to date each year.

Stay tuned.

Who are they? To find out go to our website: www.cottonwoodpaloverde.com, click on “About Us”. There you will find “Our History – The Rest of the Story”.

Community News…SUN LAKES WOMEN’S ASSOCIATIONANNUAL BAZAAR

November may sound a long way off to most folks, but to us at the Sun Lakes Women’s Association, activities are just getting heated up! If you ask me “why?”, I am thrilled to inform you that the main event is on the calendar and preparations are in full swing!!

SUN LAKES WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION BAZAAR SUN LAKES CLUB hOUSE

RIGGS ROAD AND SUN LAKES BLVD. NOVEMBER 2, 3 AND 4 FRIDAY ThRU SUNDAY

Never have you seen anything like it! The clubhouse virtually becomes a mini mall with an assortment of lovely furniture, appliances, tools, household goods, arts and crafts, jewelry, silver and vintage garden and patio items, books, DVDs and VHS tapes, beautiful Christmas collections and last (but not least) a baked goods table. While browsing around you may take advantage of our raffles – SLWA money raffle, golf cart raffle and a special raffle for some special items!

As you walk from room to room take note of the varied and numerous quality things. I never cease to be amazed at the types of items we have available. Because of the people in our community who have lived in various parts of the world, we have some beautiful objects. A big plus

to all of this is that we of SLWA will be there to “meet and greet you”. The golf cart which will be raffled off is “top of the line” and worth having. Just to mention a couple of other items that will be raffled – collectible Christmas houses and figurines.

The volunteers give their time all year long and produce results that ultimately benefit our community. We donate to the Sun Lakes Fire Department, Neighbors Who Care, Sun Lakes Country Club and also honor requests from Ironwood and Cottonwood Palo Verde for the things they need.

We certainly welcome all of the help we can get. All women in the Sun Lakes area are encouraged to come on Monday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Arts and Crafts Room at the Sun Lakes Clubhouse. If you are not familiar with the building, go to the office and ask to be directed to the Meeting Room.

Remember, if you have anything to donate such as furniture or other usable items, please contact Sharon Horton at 480-323-5519 to arrange for pick up. Sharon can also sell you items you might need at very affordable prices! You don’t even have to wait for the Big Sale!

What an opportunity to meet a lot of great folks at a great event – THE NOVEMBER BAZAAR!!!

Health & Safety…

Fire Lanes and handicap Parking

Your Cottonwood and Palo Verde Patrol request your help in honoring the NO PARKING restrictions anywhere you see a Red Curb or NO PARKING painted on the surface of the parking area. These areas are known as Fire Lanes and are needed for Emergency Equipment to pass or park. We certainly do not want to hinder their ability to assist our residents in need of emergency medical care. Please do not park in the posted Handicap Parking spaces if you do not have a valid handicap license plate or handicap placard hanging from your mirror. Thanks for your cooperation.

The Newest Addition to our Fleet

The Board of Directors recently approved the purchase of a Toyota Prius Hybrid for Patrol. The Prius will replace one of the Chevy Colorado pickup trucks currently used by Patrol. The new Prius could save as much as $7,000.00 a year in fuel costs.

“The Heat is On…Protect Your Pets”

1. Try to keep dogs, cats and other pets indoors.

2. Provide them with plenty of cool fresh water and shade.

3. Do not leave pets in a hot parked car. It is a crime.

4. Walk pets early in the morning or after sundown.

5. Protect your animal’s feet from burns. (Hot asphalt and sidewalk temperatures can reach 160 degrees.)

6. Know the signs of heat exhaustion. Loud rapid panting, rapid pulse, glazed eyes, excessive salivation, elevated body temps, whining, agitation, staring or vomiting. To cool your pet down place in the shade, apply cool water especially on the head and feet. If necessary seek immediate care.
