Srs Delia and Elizabeth are most grateful for the wonderful Jubilee celebrations held at St. Peter’s last Sunday. Relatives and guests alike remarked on the beautiful setting of the Church, the meaningful Mass and Renewal of Vows, and so many expressed how impressed they were with the warm and welcoming attitude of the whole Community. So many of you contributed in so many ways – from preparing the Music/ Liturgy; the Church environment; the McKenna Centre and Lighthouse; to home cooking and helping in so many ways in the background. Luke’s Gospel begins like no other, with a short prologue in formal literary style. Today we embark on our year’s journey through the Gospel of Luke. Journey is a key theme in Luke’s writings. This first account in the ministry of Jesus is a prophetic description of his life, teaching, death and resurrection. He interprets the Scriptures as fulfilled in his presence, and all speak well of him. But some begin to wonder – they know his ‘grass-roots’ lineage in this town of Nazareth. This incident is a prototype for the Gospel that follows. It tells of Jesus’ fulfillment of God’s promises . . . the acceptance and rejection of his person and message . . . the attempts to bring him down, and God’s thwarting of those schemes through the resurrection and ascension of Jesus. Jesus leaves Nazareth and will never return to the place of his origin His journey has begun. (Adapted from F. A place where millions have come to escape the histories of societies where everyone ‘knew their place’, to a land where we relate to each other for our inherent worth. Hence the great Australian characteristic: ‘egalitarianism’. Have we responded to the Holy Spirit perfectly? No. Our treatment of the earliest inhabitants of this land and of those genuinely fleeing persecution in their homelands is far from reconciled. THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C) 24th January, 2016

Parish Office returns to 9am-3pm on Thursday. 28th January.

Srs Delia and Elizabeth are most grateful for the wonderful Jubilee celebrations held at St. Peter’s

last Sunday. Relatives and guests alike remarked on the beautiful setting of the Church, the

meaningful Mass and Renewal of Vows, and so many expressed how impressed they were with the

warm and welcoming attitude of the whole Community. So many of you contributed in so many

ways – from preparing the Music/ Liturgy; the Church environment; the McKenna Centre and

Lighthouse; to home cooking and helping in so many ways in the background.

Our heartfelt and prayerful thanks to everyone. God Bless You !

Local man makes extraordinary claim

This could have been the headlines if

Nazareth had had a ‘local rag’ in the time of Jesus.

Today’s Gospel reading combines two beginnings – the beginning of Luke’s

Gospel, and the beginning of Jesus’ Ministry.

Luke’s Gospel begins like no other, with a short prologue in formal literary style. Today we embark on

our year’s journey through the Gospel of Luke. Journey is a key theme in Luke’s writings. This first account in the ministry of Jesus is a prophetic description of his life, teaching, death and resurrection. He interprets the Scriptures as fulfilled in his presence, and all speak well of him. But some

begin to wonder – they know his ‘grass-roots’ lineage in this town of Nazareth.

This incident is a prototype for the Gospel that follows. It tells of Jesus’ fulfillment of God’s

promises . . . the acceptance and rejection of his person and message . . . the attempts to bring him

down, and God’s thwarting of those schemes through the resurrection and ascension of Jesus.

Jesus leaves Nazareth and will never return to the place of his origin – His journey has begun. (Adapted from F. Moloney SDB)

South Land of the Holy Spirit (excerpt from Fr Michael Tate)

Just as the disciples were called to follow Jesus, we are called by the Spirit to make this

Southern Land—Australia, a place where all can live in harmony, peace and unity.

A place where people from every nation, tribe, ethnic, and religious group on the face of the

earth can create a new society, free from past structures of oppression and division.

A place where millions have come to escape the histories of societies where everyone ‘knew

their place’, to a land where we relate to each other for our inherent worth. Hence the great

Australian characteristic: ‘egalitarianism’.

Have we responded to the Holy Spirit perfectly? No. Our treatment of the earliest inhabitants

of this land and of those genuinely fleeing persecution in their homelands is far from reconciled.

But on the whole, we are creating a version of the Kingdom of God under the Southern Cross of which we can be proud.

So, Australians All, let us rejoice – For our land abounding in nature’s gifts of beauty rich and rare,

For our freedom to share life in our ‘Common-Wealth’,For the divine Spirit attracting us to follow Jesus in this

Austrialia del Espiritu Santo, South Land of the Holy Spirit.

Gospel Lk 1:1-4. 4:14-21 The scriptures were fulfilled on this day. Seeing that many others have undertaken to draw up accounts of the events that have taken place among us, exactly as these were handed down to us by those who from the outset were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, I in my turn, after carefully going over the whole story from the beginning, have decided to write an ordered account for you, Theophilus, so that your Excellency may learn how well founded the teaching is that you have received. Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee; and his reputation spread throughout the countryside. He taught in their synagogues and everyone praised him. He came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up to read, and they handed him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll he found the place where it is written:

The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me. He has sent me to bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favour.

He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to speak to them, ‘This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen.’
