Pastor’s Corner Dear Parishioners,

The news this week of the possibility of having some services like salons and barber shops allowed to open, and also, restaurants and bars with some social distancing measures in place also to open, gives us all a kind of sigh of relief. Things are improving, and those involved in these kinds of services are getting back to work. Thanks be for small mercies!

We are still waiting for the time when we can gather in large groups, and then we can set the dates for our special celebrations for our younger students to make their First Confession and First Holy Communion, and then our older students to make their Confirmation. It looks like it is still some months away, so we’ll just have to be patient.

We received the news this week that Mr. Chet Gazin died last Sunday, after struggling for many years with multiple health challenges. He was the father of Fr. Mark Gazin, who was for a time the assistant pastor here at Star of the Sea, and since his parents were residents at a care facility in Delta, Fr. Mark was able to be close to them while he lived here. We will remember Fr. Mark and his widowed mother and family in our prayers this week.

They say April showers give way to May flowers, so that’s coming soon, and that’s a joy. Let’s stay the course and be patient with the restrictions of our current days. Dr. Bonnie is a voice of calm good sense, and we all need to heed her words and be vigilant in protecting the safety for all. So let’s be kind, be charitable, and be of service to those we can help .

Have a good week ,

Let us pray today for the elderly, especially for those who are isolated or in nursing homes. They're afraid, they're afraid to die alone. They feel this pandemic as an aggressive thing for them. They are our roots, our history. They gave us faith, tradition, a sense of belonging to a homeland. Let us pray for them that the Lord may be close to them at this time.

Yesterday we reflected on Mary of Magdalene as the icon of fidelity: fidelity to God. To what God? It is to the faithful God.

Our faithfulness is nothing more than a response to God's faithfulness. God who is faithful to his word, who is faithful to his promise, who walks with his people bringing the promise close to his people. God, who continually reveals himself as a Saviour of the people because he is faithful to his promise. God, who is capable of re-doing things, of re-creating, as he did with this crippled man from birth who re-created his feet, and healed him, the God who heals, the God who always brings consolation to his people. The God who re-creates. A new re-creation: this is his faithfulness to us. A re-creation that is more wonderful than creation.

A God who goes forward and who never tires of working – "ad instar laborantis", as theologians say – to bring his people forward. Like that shepherd who when he comes home realizes that he misses a sheep and goes back to look for the sheep that has been lost there. The pastor who does overtime, but out of love, for fidelity ... And our God is a God who does overtime, but not for a fee: for free. It is the faithfulness of abundance! And it's the faithfulness of a father who is able to go up so many times to the terrace to see if his son returns and does not tire of going up there: he waits for him to celebrate.

God's fidelity is a feast, it is joy, it is such a joy that makes us do what this crippled did: he entered the temple walking, jumping, praising God. God's faithfulness is a celebration, it's a free celebration. And a celebration for all of us.

God's faithfulness is a patient faithfulness: he has patience with his people, he listens to them, guides them, slowly explains and rekindles their hearts, as he did with these two disciples who went far from Jerusalem: he warms their hearts to return home. God is a generous God who sought after Peter who had denied him, who had renounced him.

God's fidelity always precedes us, and our fidelity is always a response to that fidelity that precedes us. It is God who always precedes us. To be faithful is to praise this fidelity, to be faithful to this fidelity. It's a response to this faithfulness of God.

LITURGICAL PRESS LIVING LITURGY ~ Reflecting on the Gospel www.litpress.org

Though we are celebrating the Third Sunday of Easter, the gospel tory from Luke today has as its setting Easter Sunday. Emmaus was a small village far from Jerusalem. Two disciples, one named Cleopas, were walking to Emmaus from Jerusalem when the risen Christ himself appears to them and accompanies them on their way. There is speculation that the unnamed disciple may have been a woman. When we are reminded that Luke has a special concern for women, often narrating a story about a woman before or after telling a story about a man, it seems likely that this unnamed disciple could have been a woman. Indeed, Conception Seminary in Missouri has a icon of a scene in which Jesus speaks with Cleopas and a female disciple. In any case, as Luke is not explicit about the identity of the other disciple, we should be open to possibilities.

As the two speak to Jesus and relate to him what happened, he in turn explains the Scriptures to them, causing their hearts to burn within them. Then instead of continuing on his way, Jesus joins them and in explicit Eucharistic language, the gospel says, “He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.” With that, Jesus vanished! Thus the disciples came to know him

in the “breaking of the bread,” illustrating vividly how subsequent Christians would come to now the risen Lord. So, when we break bread in the Eucharist, we come to know the risen Christ.

With this experience, the two disciples race back to Jerusalem to report their encounter to the assembled others. The two are told that Jesus has also appeared to Simon, which according to Luke’s gospel was the first appearance. The experience of coming to know him in the breaking of the bread is additional confirmation that Jesus lives eternally, building on the appearance of the risen Christ to Simon. Up to this point, for the assembled disciples, much like for us, they have only the testimony of Peter, Cleopas, and the other disciple. They also have reports of the empty tomb and of angels announcing that Jesus is alive. At this point in the story, the other disciples are relying on the testimony of others, and such is the Christian story Disciples share the “good news” of Jesus being alive with one another. For those who have faith, the resurrection is confirmation of God’s activity on behalf of Jesus.

After Easter, the disciples come to know Jesus in the breaking of the bread. He is present among his followers as he was prior to his death and resurrection, but now, he is present in a new way. Of course, as Catholics, we see this clearly in the Eucharist, when we take bread, bless it, break it, and give it. The bread broken is Christ himself. He is our nourishment both spiritually and physically, metaphorically and actually. When we participate in the Eucharist, we call to mind his passion, death, and resurrection. We consume him who is the Bread of Life. When we want to know Jesus, we experience the Eucharist not merely by gazing at it, but by consuming it - for it’s a real food. In this way, we not only live but share in and become the paschal mystery.
