A Talk by Jennifer Hubbard

St. Paul Roman Catholic Church

Wednesday October 30th at 7:30 pm

Jennifer Hubbard faced the worst crisis a parent

could face when she lost her 6-year old daughter

Catherine Violet during the 2012 Sandy Hook

Elementary School shooting. Since that tragic day,

she has turned to her faith in search of peace.

Jennifer will share how her faith has been

transformed and how she has found spiritual

strength by focusing on His very real presence in

her life.

She is a monthly contributor for The Magnificat.

Her essays focus on God’s healing presence and

His faithfulness. She is the recipient of a 2014 and

2015 Catholic Press Awards and has had her work

published in Fairfield County Catholic and shares

her message with audiences across the country.

FROM MY HEART TO YOURS

Francis Thompson (16 December 1859 – 13 November 1907 / Preston, England) is the English poet who

wrote the all-time spiritual classic “Hound of Heaven.” I spoke about it during my homily at Sunday’s

10.30 AM Mass. (It’s not John Milton, sorry. Paradise Lost is John Milton’s magnum opus) “The Hound of

Heaven” is a poem centering on the pursuit of a sinner by a loving God. Written in a lofty, dignified style

that expresses deep feelings, it is classified as an ode. It first appeared in Poems, a collection of Francis

Thompson's works published in 1893. Out of 182 lines of the Hound of Heaven, here I quote the few lines

from the beginning and a few lines at the conclusion.

I fled Him down the nights and down the days, I fled him down the arches of the years, I fled Him down the

labyrinthine ways, Of my own mind, and in the midst of tears, I hid from him, and under running laugh-

ter…………

…….....Rise, clasp my hand, and come, Halts by me that Footfall. Is my gloom, after all, Shade of His

hand, outstretched caressingly? Ah, Fondest, Blindest, Weakest, I am He whom thou seekest. Thou dravest

(drive) Love from thee who dravest Me. (Bartleby.com)

‘Fleeing away’ and ‘hiding’ from the creator began with Adam and Eve. God found them, called them and

promised them redemption. In Jesus Christ that promise was fulfilled.

The next book I mentioned at all homilies was “Practice of the Presence of God” by Brother Lawrence of

the Resurrection (born as Nicolas Herman) a 17th century Carmelite Hermit. Brother Lawrence related that

we should establish in ourselves a sense of God’s Presence by continually conversing with Him. Brother

Lawrence said that the worst that could happen to him was to lose that sense of God which he had enjoyed

for so long. Yet the goodness of God assured him He would not forsake him utterly and that He would give

him strength to bear whatever evil He permitted to happen to him. Brother Lawrence, therefore, said he

feared nothing. Brother Lawrence never advanced beyond being the cook at the Paris monastery, but he de-

veloped the unique gift of being able to pray incessantly with God throughout the entire day and regardless

of whatever else he was doing.

The other book I had mentioned was another spiritual classic, “The Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan of

the 17th century time of puritanism.” The entire book is presented as a dream sequence narrated by

an omniscient narrator. The allegory's protagonist, Christian, is an everyman character, and the plot centers

on his journey from his hometown, the "City of Destruction" ("this world"), to the "Celestial City" ("that

which is to come": Heaven) atop Mount Zion. Christian is weighed down by a great burden—the

knowledge of his sin—which he believed came from his reading "the book in his hand" (the Bible). This

burden, which would cause him to sink into Hell, is so unbearable that Christian must seek deliverance. He

meets ‘Evangelist’ as he is walking out in the fields, who directs him to the "Wicket Gate" for deliverance.

Since Christian cannot see the "Wicket Gate" in the distance, Evangelist directs him to go to a "shining

light," which Christian thinks he sees. (Courtesy: Wikipedia)
