Reflecting on God's Word It's not that the Pharisee's prayer is a bad prayer. It starts out well: "O God, I thank you . . ." Gratitude is good. But then it gets into boasting: "I am not like the rest of humanity . . . I fast . . . I pay tithes" (Luke 18:11, 12). It's a Little Jack Horner prayer. Remem-ber the old nursery rhyme that ends with Jack say-ing, "What a good boy am I!"? The Pharisee's prayer is all about him and what he does, all the while gauging the distance between himself and the rest of humankind. In contrast, the tax collector "stood off at a dis-tance" with bowed head, beating his breast and say-ing, "O God, be merciful to me a sinner" (18:13). He knows who he is and who God is and what God alone can do for him. No repetitive "I," no swelling ego there, just a repentant figure, one who asks to receive what only God can give--mercy. Jesus tells this story "to those who were con-vinced of their own righteousness and despised eve-ryone else" (18:9). How do we hear it? It acknowl-edges God who makes us "just," that is, who helps us to be in proper relationship with God, with each other, and with all creation. Sirach reminds us that our just God hears the cry of the oppressed, the wail of the orphan, the com-plaint of the widow, the petition of those who serve God willingly, and the prayer of the lowly. These folks allow room for God to enter their minds and hearts, and then all kinds of things can begin to hap-pen, both within and all around them. --James A. Wallace, C.SS.R. El 1 de noviembre tendremos nuestra celebración de todos los Santos por lo cual están invitados a esta cele-bración y unirnos con nuestros hermanos que han alcanzado la plenitud de la vida a través de los siglos y de todas las razas y lenguas y que esta ocasión nos uni-remos a ellos, como siempre, en una manera especial para que nos interceda y nos guíen en nuestro camino hacia al Padre. All Saints and All Souls Join us for a Mass of Thanksgiving on All Saints Day, November 1 at 7:00pm. We will be remembering all our benefac-tors, both past and present. Let us ap-preciate what St. John reminds us, “Beloved: See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are.” May our deeds be a prayer to God. A small reception will follow in that parish hall. On All Souls Day, November 2nd, we will remember all of our loved ones who have died. We invite you to bring pictures of your loved ones who you would like re-membered in our special altar the entire month of November. The deadline for reg-istration is Sunday, October 29 and the suggested donation is $20.00 per name.
