SPECIAL NOTE ON PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR POOR SOULS

Normally, from Nov. 1st through Nov. 8th, a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the souls in Purgatory, may be obtained each day by visiting a cemetery (Coemeterii visitatio) and praying, even if only mentally, for the departed.

This year, the Major Penitentiary has decreed that due to the ongoing pandemic, instead of being limited to November 1st – 8th, the faithful may transfer the possibility of gaining indulgences for the Souls in Purgatory to any particular day during the month of November, for the same total of eight days, but not necessarily contiguous (back-to-back) days. The usual conditions still apply: sacramental confession, reception of Holy Communion, prayer for the Holy Father, and detachment from all sins.

Like A Great Symphony: Honoring The Saints “When the Church keeps the memorials of martyrs and other saints during the annual cycle, she proclaims the Paschal mystery in those ‘who have suffered and have been glorified with Christ. She pro-poses them to the faithful as examples who draw all men to the Father through Christ, and through their merits she begs for God’s favors’ (Vatican II, Const. Sacrosanctum Concilium, no. 104).” In the formulas of Masses for saints in the Ro-man Missal, the Church expresses her prayer in words that help us to consider the various colors in this spectrum of life. On each of these days, there is at least a collect proper to the saint that the priest re-cites in the opening rite immediately before the Litur-gy of the Word. This brief prayer condenses the char-acter of the celebration.[12] In a few words it reminds us of the aspect of God’s holiness that shines forth most brightly in the saint we commemorate that day. Often it begins by recalling some facet of the history of salvation, in particular the Mystery of Christ. And it usually urges the Christian people to seek the inter-cession of that saint for some area of their life. The content of the collects is quite rich and varied. Thus, for example, on the memorial of Saint John Fisher and Saint Thomas More (June 22), we ask to confirm with the witness of our life the faith we profess (what Saint Josemaria would call unity of life); or we ask to have apostolic zeal like that of Saint Francis Xavier (December 3); or to live the mystery of Christ especially by contemplating his Passion as did Saint Catherine of Siena (April 29); or to have our heart enkindled with the fire of the Holy Spirit on the day of Saint Philip Neri (May 26). On other occasions we ask for gifts and graces for the Church: the fruitfulness of the apostolate on the me-morial of Saint Charles Luwanga and his martyr com-panions (June 3); to have shepherds to the measure of Christ’s heart, on the feast of Saint Ambrose (December 7); or to trustingly open our hearts to Christ’s grace, as Saint John Paul II asked of us (October 22). On the memorial of Saint Juan Diego (December 9) we contemplate our Lady’s love for her people, and on that of Saint Agatha (February 5) we are reminded of how pleased God is with the virtue of purity. These examples, which could be multiplied many times, show us that the prayers we offer on the feasts of the saints are a very rich resource for our personal prayer on that day. They can help us to ad-dress our Lord spontaneously with specific phrases during our hours of work and rest that day.

Statement on the Declarations of Pope Francis Re-garding Civil Unions The worldwide communications media have reported with strong emphasis, as a change of course, the news that Pope Francis has declared that persons in the homosexual condition, as children of God, “have a right to have a family” and that “no one should be thrown out or be made unhappy because of it.” Moreover, they write that he has declared: “What we have to create is a civil union. In this way they will be legally covered. I have defended this.” The declarations were made in an interview with Evgeny Afineevsky, director of a documentary, “Francesco,” premiered on October 21, 2020, on the occasion of the Rome Film Festival (Festa del Film di Roma). Such declarations generate great bewilderment and cause confusion and error among Catholic faith-ful, inasmuch as they are contrary to the teaching of Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, and of the re-cent Magisterium by which the Church guards, pro-tects and interprets the whole deposit of faith con-tained in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. They cause wonderment and error regarding the Church’s teaching among people of good will, who sincerely wish to know what the Catholic Church teaches. They impose upon pastors of souls the duty of conscience to make fitting and necessary clarifications. First of all, the context and the occasion of such declarations make them devoid of any magisteri-al weight. They are rightly interpreted as simple pri-vate opinions of the person who made them. These declarations do not bind, in any manner, the con-sciences of the faithful who are rather obliged to ad-here with religious submission to what Sacred Scrip-ture and Sacred Tradition, and the ordinary Magisteri-um of the Church teach on the matter in question. In particular, the following are to be noted. 1. “Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, Tradition has always declared that 'homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered'” (Catechism of the Catho-lic Church, no. 2357; Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Persona humana, “Declaration on Certain Questions Concerning Sexual Ethics, no. VIII[1]), inasmuch as they are contrary to the natural law, closed to the gift of life and void of a true affec-tive and sexual complementarity. Therefore, they can-not be approved.
