Stewardship: 2017 School Annual Appeal Investing in our students from the starting line Next weekend the second collection will be for our school's Annual Appeal. Close to $400,000 has been raised since 2012 from parishioners, alumni, parents and friends. Additions to our STEM programs, technology maintenance and tuition assistance were made possible because of past support. Please join us in supporting our students and their families. Be that unseen support cheering them on from the sidelines. With your help, they will cross the finish line prepared to be all God intends them to be. You may donate using your Offertory envelopes, mail, or at www.faithdirect.net. Gifts of stocks and IRA rollovers are also a means to support our school. Thank you.

From Our Pastor

Page 3 November 26, 2017

“The kingdoms of this world sometimes build themselves on arrogance, rivalry, oppression; the kingdom of Christ is ‘a kingdom of justice, love and peace’ … [T]o reign as He does means to serve God and the brethren—a service that flows from love. (Pope Francis)

Today we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, closing Ordinary time in our Liturgical year. We begin next Sunday the anticipatory season of Advent. For the past several weeks, Matthew’s Gospel has related parables which are meant to prod us from our slumber; to be vigilant for the end of days when the faithful will be rewarded, when the prepared will be satisfied. It is fitting that we focus on these readings just before Advent because it is through the Incarnation that we are awakened to new life. In Christ all is fulfilled; the darkness of sin illuminated by the birth of our Savior.

Yet today’s Gospel is not so much a parable as a warning, a call to action: to welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, give drink to the thirsty. It is a call to love. This call left unanswered is what Jesus warns against when he separates the rams from the goats. Those who have heard their shepherd will live forever with the Father. Those who don’t? A less than spiritually satisfying end.

Harsh words when we think of all that is coming in four weeks. Therein lies the rub. We do know what awaits us; we do know Christ became man to save our souls; that He would be rejected, would suffer and die, all for our benefit. The early Church knew this as well. What they did not know, nor do we, is when this final separation would take place. It was vital to “stay awake,” to be “children of the light.”

This is just as important today. Christ calls us to treat everyone with love; to move beyond our comfort zone and reach out to those in need. As Advent beckons, our hearts grow large with largesse; we soften our gaze towards those less “desirable.” We give of our plenty to those in want; we welcome a stranger to our table at Thanksgiving; we forgive past indiscretions. We live as we love: complete.

How much better then to live as the last Sunday in Ordinary Time, with the hope of Christmas in our hearts all year? How much kinder, how much gentler would our world be if we really recognized the face of Christ in others? How much better if they could recognize it in us?

Let us remain alert; let us keep our eyes and hearts open to opportunities to meet Jesus every day. Let the Beatitudes be more than platitudes; let them come alive in our words and actions. Let the end of Ordinary Time lead us to something extraordinary. Let it lead us always to Christ.

~Fr. Posey

PETS IN THE PARISH

Monsignor Heller was a great supporter of both school and Parish, and was often seen visiting around the grounds with his dog, JOCK. Father Thomas Casey, a former Assistant at St. James in the 1960s, told this story: “Jock was

given to me as a puppy in 1966. I dared not bring him to the rectory so I kept him hidden in the CCD House (House of Ministries today). I went away for something or other, and when I came back Monsignor Heller told me that I had left the back door of the CCD House open. Before I could say a word, he continued: “I went to close it and almost stepped on your puppy.” “Aye, well, um, I’ve been meaning to tell you about that,” I said. After a long withering look in my direction Monsignor Heller allowed that I could keep him as long as I didn’t bring him into the rectory. Soon after that I had to go away again. It was wintertime, and the poor thing got out and was found wandering around the yard. When I got back that time I found Monsignor and Jock all cozy in the Rectory living room. I left a year or so later. Jock stayed on to help Monsignor run the place for the next 15 years.”

His faithful dog, Jock, died on September, 3, 1981, just six days before Monsignor Heller left St. James to live at The Cardinal O’Boyle Home in the Archdiocese of Washington.

Pets have found homes in the parish in recent times. During the past few years, we all enjoyed, especially the Youth Ministry, seeing Father Tran with his dog Jamie, named for St. James. When Father Tran left St. James in June for his new assignment, we said good-bye to Jamie, too. Coco resides at the convent. We often see Coco going for walks around the parish neighborhood with our IHM Sisters.

In the fall a Blessing of Pets takes place at St. James Parish in celebrating the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.

Year-End Stewardship Opportunities With the market at record levels, you may make a gift of stock as a donation to our parish or diocese. In exchange for a gift of long-term, appreciated securities (stock), you can receive an income tax deduction and avoid capital gains taxes on stock appreciation. For more information, please call (703) 841-3896 or visit: www.arlingtondiocese.org/giving/gifts_stock.aspx.

Make a Gift from an IRA Charitable Rollover Tax laws allow individuals 70½ or older to make a direct IRA distribution to a charity. Such qualified direct distributions to charity are not subject to income tax and can fulfill your RMD.
