This week our College began its Lenten journey. First by preparing

for Lent with Shrove Tuesday, an old tradition dating back centuries in

preparation for fasting. Students loved the opportunity to share in a pancake feast at recess time, with all monies

raised going to Caritas Australia.

We then celebrated Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent with a College Mass in the Dame Roma Mitchell Centre on Wednesday.

The ashes that were placed on our foreheads remind us to be humble

people, thinking of those let fortunate than ourselves. It is also a time of

renewal where we take the time to reflect on who we are as an individual and remembering Jesus as a teacher.

This is an important time in our Catholic tradition as we prepare

for Holy Week and Easter.

Mr Adam Cibich,Assistant Principal - Religious Identity

& Mission (APRIM)

‘HOLY SPRINGTIME’ > Preparing for Easter Season

Our Lenten Journey BeginsOur beautiful Ash Wednesday Mass signalled the beginning of our Lenten journey, the ‘Holy Springtime’. Lent is a time of preparation and contemplation, as we prepare for the Easter season, and it provides for us the space and time to look at those aspects of our lives that we perhaps would like to change for the better. It is an opportune time to renew and in some ways start afresh.

Parent Information EveningThank you to the large number of parents who attended this on Monday evening. As I explained during the evening, we are in partnership with you as parents and we recognise and respect your role as the primary educators of your children. Studies show that 60-80% of any child’s learning occurs in the home so you have a significant responsibility and impact on your child’s development. I strongly encourage you all to be a real presence for your son and daughter and to support their learning and faith journey. There will be many opportunities for you to be actively involved in your child’s education and in the life of the College. I also ask for your support of our work here at Gleeson College. We have a very dedicated staff and they both deserve and warmly welcome your support. I look forward to a productive association this year as we continue the exciting journey of educating your children.

SACE Merit CeremonyI was fortunate to represent Gleeson College at the SACE Merit Ceremony last week held at Government House. Seven students from Gleeson College received a total of nine subject merits for their 2017 studies. Congratulations to these students on behalf of our community for this excellent achievement. Next Wednesday we are holding our annual Academic Assembly to recognise our high achievers from 2017 across the College, which provides another opportunity to celebrate the success of these students.

Student Leadership CampThis Sunday and Monday, our 2018 Student Leaders will attend their Leadership Camp at West Beach. This is a great way for our Student Leaders to begin their journey of leadership. I thank our Student Leaders in advance for their organisation and attendance, for giving up part of their weekend and for their engagement in this camp. I also thank the staff under Mr Bertram’s direction that will accompany the group. I am looking forward to spending time on Sunday with this group of exceptional and inspiring young people and I am certain that we will witness the development of their gift of leadership throughout the year.

Enrolment at Gleeson CollegeIt is fair to say that we are experiencing an unprecedented level of interest in enrolment here at Gleeson College, which is terrific. Our Year 7 and 8 numbers for 2019 and 2020 are exceptionally strong. If you know of any family that intend to enrol their child and are yet to do so, please encourage them to lodge an enrolment application, available from our website, as soon as possible.

Ensuring our school is a safe place for allAs the school year commences I want to assure all parents and carers of our absolute commitment to ensuring that Gleeson College is a safe place for all.

• Our staff are committed and trained to protect the children and young people in our care.

• All staff and regular volunteers have current police checks.

• We teach our children age-appropriate strategies to keep themselves safe through South Australia’s Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum.

• Staff complete certification and undertake regular updated training in Responding to Abuse and Neglect in Education and Care Settings.

• We also promote strategies to minimise bullying and help students stay safe online.

You can read more about our commitment to the wellbeing of your child on our website. Additional

information about the broader protection policies of Catholic Education SA can be found on their website at http://www.cesa.catholic.edu.au/our-schools/safe-environments-for-all. The website also includes links to online resources for parents and students on a range of topics including anxiety, depression, bullying and how to support your child.

If you have any questions or concerns about child safety please contact your child’s Care Group Teacher, House Coordinator or one of our College Counsellors in the first instance.

Fair Funding for Catholic Schools

As we head towards a State Election, parents are encouraged to considerhow each political party is promising

to support our Catholic schools.Until recently – Catholic schools in South Australia received the lowest level of funding in the country. In November, the State Government announced that it would increase

recurrent funding to our schools. This equates to a $14.3 million increase in 2018 and brings us into much closer alignment with the amount Catholic schools receive in other parts of the country. The State Government also announced a capital grant of $5.5 million indexed annually to CPI.

While this is good news for our schools, there is much more that can

be done to ensure our schools receive adequate support. You can read more at: www.cesa.catholic.edu.au/news/

Should you feel strongly about this issue we encourage you to talk to the

MP and political candidates in your local electorate!

STUDENT MATTERS 2018 > Chewing Gum / Deodorant Cans / EarringsChewing Gum at Gleeson College >A reminder to parents to please have a conversation with your child/ren regarding Gleeson College being a chewing gum free zone. There are WH&S concerns with chewing gum at school and it also contributes to a significant litter concerns when it is not disposed of appropriately. As we endeavour to provide the highest possible quality facilities that are clean and hygienic we ask that chewing gum is not on College grounds.

Staff will ask students to dispose of chewing gum in an appropriate manner if it is noticed they are chewing.

Deodorant and Aerosol Cans >Another WH&S concern in our school community is aerosol cans. These pressurised cans are a risk to store in lockers and also contain ingredients that can trigger health concerns with

other students if sprayed. Can parents please not supply aerosol deodorant cans to the student’s to have at school.

Earrings >As fashion trends change, we ask for the support of parents regarding students following uniform expectations. To clarify the uniform policy in regards to earrings, a student with pierced ears may wear no more than two simple gold or silver studs with clear or white stones (4mm in diameter) or sleepers (5-10mm or 5c piece size) in each lower ear. No other visible piercings or clear coverings of piercings are permitted. This includes piercing of the nose.

I thank you for your support with these matters.

On Sunday 7 January, 10 other students and I departed Adelaide

Airport for the 2018 National Mathematics Summer School in

Canberra.

After a stopover in Melbourne, we arrived at the airport where we waited for arrivals from the other

states around the country. We then caught a bus to the Australian

National University where we would stay at the John XXIII College during

our visit. We were allocated our rooms and put away our baggage before gathering for dinner in the main hall. The time after dinner

was spent being introduced to the staff, facilities and programme, and getting to know the other students.

The following morning, lectures started with a course on Number

Theory. The lectures were interesting and I learnt many new things from them each day. We then split into

smaller groups of about 10 students and a teacher for tutorials, where

we would work on a set of questions about topics covered in the lecture.

NATIONAL MATHEMATICS SUMMER SCHOOL > Student ReflectionThe questions were challenging and

different from the usual textbook questions I was used to at school. After lunch, we had a lecture on our second

course for the week, Knot Theory, followed by a tutorial similar to the one

in the morning. Afterwards, we had a couple of hours of free time, where

we could explore the campus and the city or relax in the common room. After dinner, there was scheduled time

for individual study, where we could work on questions from the morning

or afternoon tutorials. Then, there was more free time and announcements

about the following day before going to bed. The rest of the week was spent

following a similar schedule.

During our free time on Friday, we visited Black Mountain Tower and

enjoyed the spectacular view over the whole city. On Saturday afternoon, organised buses took us to some of

the tourist attractions, like Questacon, the Art Gallery and Parliament House.

It was a fun afternoon and a good break from all the studying we had been doing during the week. The staff at the school worked in many

different areas of mathematics, such as an engineers, statisticians and

researchers and they introduced me to some new careers I might choose

in the future. Overall, I leant lots from the two courses and met new, like-minded people who enjoyed

maths too.

GLEESON IP&P STUDENTS AHEAD OF THEIR TIME!In Information Processing and Publishing (IP&P), a subject in the Technologies Learning Area, we have been proactive in targeting students with talent in graphic design, digital and multi-media presentations, in order to accelerate and offer them a place in the Year 12 class, whilst completing Year 11. This program has been very successful over the years with merits being achieved in 10 of the past 12 years - most of them by accelerated students!

In 2017, six Year 11 students completed Stage 2 Information Processing and Publishing, a subject in which the students created brochures, menus, and various websites to a professional standard. The students should be commended on their outstanding results with two A+’s, 2 A’s and an A- being achieved by these students. One of these students, Nicholas Centofanti achieved an A+ with Merit and was pictured in last week’s Globe issue at Government House receiving his Merit Certificate. Mention should also be made of Nicholas Schrapel’s A+ in the subject, also an exceptional result. Adam Fazzini commented that “IPP was my favourite subject” and Zac Kessner further commented that he had “a wonderful year of IPP, was by far my favourite subject from my schooling years”. These comments are testament to the value of this subject.

These results follow on from the 2016 results where three of the five accelerated Year 11 students achieved A+ with Merit - Lucy Keatch, Amelia Pedley and Bethany Almond (pictured at right). These students have been named in the Year 12 result list for 2017 as having achieved a 95+ ATAR. These students can attest to the fact that their completion of a Year 12 subject, such as IP&P a year early, prepared them better for rigors of Year 12.

This year, three Year 11 students are completing the Stage 2 course - Morgan Evans, Isaac Raggatt and Aidan Romano. I wish them, along with the rest of the Year 12 cohort, all the best with their studies this year.

Catholic schools in SA need fair funding

All schools – government, Catholic and Independent – deserve access to a fair funding model.

Capital funding is essential to ensure schools have quality learning spaces and facilities.

Since 2002, the State government has spent $2.2 billion1 on capital funding for school and early years infrastructure. During the same period, SA Catholic schools received no capital funding from the State government.

Our students deserve better.
