What do the students already know?
Students should already know the names of
the three branches but will learn their
responsibilities and role in the U.S.
Government.
Objective: Students will demonstrate their
understanding of the concept of the three
branches of government and the
responsibilities of each branch.
Materials:
Paper
Pencils or pens
Handouts highlighting each branch of the government (Inspiration Map)
Smart board
3 worksheets on branches of the U.S. Government
Quiz
Procedure:
1) Teacher will pass out a handout highlighting the branches of government and discuss each.
2) Teacher will incorporate Inspiration on the smart board to show additional information in an
interactive way to help students gain an understanding of the structure of the U.S. Government.
3) Teacher will have a student pass out 3 worksheets for practice to master understanding and have
students break out into groups of 3.
4) Teacher will have students take a quiz briefly at the next class period before starting new lesson.
Assessment:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to successfully complete a quiz on the 3 branches of
government passing with a 70% or better and will complete three worksheets for a grade as well.
A Brief Description of Lesson:
I will begin the lesson by passing out a handout of what will be shown on the smart board to help
students follow along and use as a study aid for the quiz. Next I will discuss each branch and examples
within our government to increase understanding. Then I will have a student pass out three worksheets
to work on in a group setting in groups of three. I will have the students turn in the worksheets for a
grade and have them use the notes handout to study for the quiz at the beginning of the next class
period to have the students show what they have learned.
