All of our Correspondents volunteer their time & efforts each month, taking to the road so they can bring the stories & pictures here for you, the readers, to enjoy.

Howdy everyone! Summertime is officially here & we’re all ready for some fun in the sun! With so many rides & events all over the region, you’re sure to find something exciting to do almost every weekend throughout the summer. In the 3 years that I’ve had the magazine, I’ve never seen our calendar so packed. Even if you do make it out every weekend, remember that there’s no such thing as TOO much fun….

Some of the highlighted events for this month are the 6th Annual Richmond Tattoo Arts festival on the 6th through the 8th; Outlander’s Boogie Woogie Bugle Party in Luray, VA on the 7th, which is definitely going to be one of the biggest events of the year with an expected 10,000 bikes to be in attendance (they throw the most incredible parties!); on the 8th is the Rebuild Ride & Driver Appreciation BBQ in Driver, VA, thanking all the bikers for their help in raising funds to recover/rebuild their communities after being hit hard from the tornado a couple of months ago; on the 13th & 14th out in Chase City, VA is the 13th Annual South Central Bike Fair; June 14th get ready for the 4th Annual Rallyin the Valley at Shenandoah HD in Staunton, VA; also on the 14th is Thunder Road HD’s 2nd Anniversary Party out in Danville; on the 28th & 29th is the AHDRA’s Northeast Nationals in Rising Sun, MD; Fastlane Biker Gear is having their Anniversary Party, Bike Show & Vets House Benefit on the 29th in Virginia Beach. The Thunder Roads crew will be at the Virginia Motorsports Park in Petersburg again this year on June 29th for their annual Bike Fest where we’ll be sponsoring the Thunder Roads Cruise Lane. Come out & enjoy all the exciting events that are scheduled at the park that day - hope to see you all there!

Our nations birthday is coming up next month – show your communities that you’re proud to be an American & get your flags ready to fly those ole red white & blues on your homes, cars & especially your bikes!

We’d like to thank you all again for rolling with us month after month – you are truly what keeps this thunder rolling through the Mid-Atlantic. Ride safe & enjoy your roads wherever you may be travelling to & from. Wishing you all lots of Love, Peace & Happiness in your lives. Have a fantastic month & we’ll see you next time around!

Happy Trails,

Kelly

SNACK HAPPYSalmon and strawberries may be nature’s equivalent of Prozac and Zoloft. That’s because folate-rich foods cause a boost in serotonin levels in the brain, much like antidepressants do. So the next time you’re feeling depressed, grill some salmon, or treat yourself to a bowl of strawberries. Chances are, you’ll turn that frown upside down in no time.

GOOD FOR YOU!Dice Run On Saturday May 3rd, 27 bikers on 22 bikes raised $120 for breast cancer research. The riders assembled at Renegade Classics to start the ride from Hooters to Hooters to Hooters in Northern Virginia [Fairfax, Manassas & Woodbridge]. A pair of dice was rolled at each stop – prizes were awarded for Hi Score, Low Score and getting Snake Eyes and Box Cars. The money was added to the Kelly Jo Dowd Fund at the V Foundation for Cancer Research – Hooters’ charity named after one of their own. Join us next year (1st Saturday in May) to support this worthy cause.

Proud To Be An American Proud To Be An American

When a soldier comes home, he finds it hard....

to listen to his son whine about being bored.

to keep a straight face when people complain about potholes.

to be tolerant of people who complain about the hassle of getting ready for work.

to be understanding when a co-worker complains about a bad night’s sleep.

to be silent when people pray to God for a new car.

to control his panic when his wife tells him he needs to drive slower.

to be compassionate when a businessman expresses a fear of flying.

to keep from laughing when anxious parents say they’re afraid to send their kids off to summer camp.

to keep from ridiculing someone who complains about hot weather.

to control his frustration when a colleague gripes about his coffee being cold.

to remain calm when his daughter complains about having to walk the dog.

to be civil to people who complain about their jobs.

to just walk away when someone says they only get two weeks of vacation a year.

to be forgiving when someone says how hard it is to have a new baby in the house.

The only thing harder than being a Soldier

Is loving one.

For someone very special & dear to my heart…I’d like to send a huge CONGRATULATIONS to my son, Curtis Matthews, for receiving a Navy Achievement Medal for capturing two Iraqi prisoners trying to escape. Curt is serving a tour of duty as a prison guard in Camp Bucca, Iraq – I know he’s damn proud to be an American! Hugs from home XXX All my Love ~ Mom ~ (Kelly)

To Curt & all of those who are serving in the Mid-East & around the world – We salute you!!! Be safe & hurry home!

Aaron JohnsonFull time th grade school teacher (seriously), 9 years in the power sports industry having been a technician and service manager for Suzuki, Kawasaki, Polaris, Bombardier and Harley-Davidson. I am the as-sistant parts mgr. for Turners Honda in Elizabeth City and three years as an MSF instructor. I also build cus-tom motorcycles and do show winning restorations.

TECH TIPS

Let’s talk about lubrication…(minds out of the gutters please….). If there is nothing else we as motorcycle en-thusiasts do to keep our bikes running down the road, it is making sure that the lifeblood of the motor is clean. Oil, or the topic of it, can be highly debated. If you ask any dealer-ship mechanic which oil is the best to use in your bike, they will say the oil from the manufacturer without hesitation. Having worked in both the service departments and parts departments of several dealerships, I have to say I know that from experience, and there are several debates there as well “synthetic or mineral”, “additives or no additives”, “10w40 or 20w50”, my favorite of all time (ask any Gold-winger) “moly or no moly”…. and the list goes on. Well, there are as many right answers as there are people riding motorcycles so you need to do some homework.

Sticking with the manufacturer’s oil is always a safe bet, especially when it comes to warranty issues and new mo-torcycles. When you buy a new bike, do what they tell you to do…break it in with the factory oil. No matter what brand you ride, all of them use their own oil to test their motors and base their break in procedures using statistics gathered while running THEIR oil. What does this mean to you, the owner, after the break in is done or your bike has many

miles on it already????? It’s your choice…but you should do your homework as oil that is great in one bike, doesn’t mean it will be great in them all, and if you go with synthetic you need to stay with it. Switching back and forth is tough on the lines and you will develop problems over time.

The thing we want our oil to do is to keep our engines and transmissions running smoothly and not spit out parts of themselves whilst we tool down the road, but there are engineers available to you that can help you do this much more effectively. We should all keep an eye on the oil level in our bikes every time we ride, but the process of checking your oil on the molecular level (yep, I know being a science teacher would pay off!) is called an “Oil Analysis”. This is an excellent way to really get an idea of what’s going on in-side the engine of your two wheeled therapy machine, think of it like a full blood work up for your motorcycle. (Caution: Do not try and file this with your insurance company, even if your motorcycle does feel like your baby…the insurance company will not.) The best place I have found for an oil analysis is Blackstone Labs. These guys know there stuff and even better…they understand motorcycles. You can check them out here. www.blackstone-labs.com It’s a great deal, they will send you a test kit for FREE (yes, not a typo) and it only costs $22.50 for them to give you more informa-tion than you can process in that brain of yours. They give you all the scientific mumbo jumbo, but then they break it down in normal terms like “your transmission is showing excessive wear…” or the like.

Now, you started reading this article thinking I was going to tell you what is the best oil you should run….HA! You think I’d stick my neck out like that…man, I was born at night, but not last night…but what I will do is point you in the right direction when that new noise suddenly appears on your ride home and you are wondering what you should do about it. Get an oil analysis…it’s cheap piece of mind and you should do it whenever you switch brands and types of oil.

Knees in the breeze y’allRide careful….Aaron

P.S. Let me know what ya think about a Q & A piece in here, you know…. hard thought out e-mailed questions from our dedicated readers and information filled smart ass answers from a guy who works with 10 year olds all day long….Let us know!!! Email me at [email protected]

April 2th – 2th 200 Grandy, NC

What a gorgeous weekend to make it out to the 7th Annual Outer Banks Bike Rally at Barry’s Walnut Island in Grandy, NC. Over 10,000 bikes showed up throughout the weekend to show support for our troops & to help raise money for our Wounded Warriors & their families. While the bikes rolled in, JB Walker & the Cheap Whiskey Band were kickin out the tunes for the crowd. The biker weekend had it all – Poker Run, Bike Show, Biker Games, Door Prizes, Cash Prizes, Treasure Hunt, Burnouts, & other surprises. Saturday night, was the annual Pirates Biker Ball complete with wenches, pirates & lots of “ARRRRHH”s. It was the prefect way to spend a beautiful weekend on bikes with friends while also giving to our troops & their families. To see more of this & other upcoming events, visit www.myspace.com/walnutislandrestaurant. Mark your calendars for Labor Day weekend, Aug 29th – 31st , 2008, for another biker fun filled weekend at Barry’s for the 8th Annual Outer Banks Bike Show – see you there!

RIDE FOR RED Hi! On April 19th I had the pleasure of attending “The Ride for The Red”.This event was sponsored by The Red Knights MC Chapter 8, Petersburg. All proceeds went to the local Red Cross that serves The Cities and counties of Brunswick, Colonial Heights, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Emporia, Greenville, Lunenburg, Micklenburg, Nottoway, Petersburg, Prince George and Sussex.

They had 62 participants, which rode through Prince George, Sussex, South Hampton and Greenville Counties in Memory of Jacqueline Macklin Brown. (former Red Cross Chapter Chairperson).

The Red Knights would like to thank the other sponsors: Murphy Brown , LLC and Advantastaff, Inc., Waubridge Specialty Fabrics, LLC and Sign Sponsor-The Virginia Diner.

They had a great ride and a good bike show. Sport Class winner -Cary Nelson, Touring Class winner-Ed Snyder, Custom Class-Gary Harvey and the Peoples Choice winner- Gary Harvey.

As always, Fire Fighters are on duty! Thank you for all you do!

Often we forget what the Red Cross does for so many people, unfortunately the recent tornados brings tragedy too close for many. So please take time to donate to your Red Cross chapter.

Good to Go.

You Didn’t See MeFor anyone that knows bikers.....

I saw you hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line. But, you didn’t see me put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday.

I saw you pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk. But, you didn’t see me playing Santa at the local mall.

I saw you change your mind about going into the restaurant. But, you didn’t see me attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief.

I saw you roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by. But, you didn’t see me driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window.

I saw you frown at me when I smiled at your children. But, you didn’t see me when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless.

I saw you stare at my long hair. But, you didn’t see me and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love.

I saw you roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves. But, you didn’t see me and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none.

I saw you look in fright at my tattoos. But, you didn’t see me cry as my children where born and have their name written over and in my heart.

I saw you change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere. But, you didn’t see me going home to be with my family.

I saw you complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be. But, you didn’t see me when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane.

I saw you yelling at your kids in the car. But, you didn’t see me pat my child’s hands knowing he was safe behind me.

I saw you reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road. But, you didn’t see me squeeze my wife’s leg when she told me to take the next turn.

I saw you race down the road in the rain. But, you didn’t see me get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date.

I saw you run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time. But, you didn’t see me trying to turn right.

I saw you cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in. But, you didn’t see me leave the road.

I saw you waiting impatiently for my friends to pass. But, you didn’t see me. I wasn’t there.

I saw you go home to your family. But you didn’t see me. Because, I died that day you cut me off.

I was just a biker. A person with friends and a family. But, you didn’t see me.

Hello Thunder Roads Magazine readers. After a few failed attempts and mother nature not cooperating, along with dead-lines to meet, this month’s Reader’s Rides turned into a self intro...My name is Steve Bagwell aka “Bagz”...I am the new Sales/Correspondent for Thunder Roads Mid-Atlantic Magazine. I’ll be serving South/Southwestern VA including Lynchburg, Danville, Roanoke, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Radford, Wytheville, and Abingdon. It’s alot of territory but I am looking forward to it!!! I was born in Raleigh, NC, but moved to Lynchburg in 1966...and have been in the area ever since except for a few years in Richmond and Covington. Lynchburg has always been “home”. I have been in the wind since the 70’s and still have all my oldskool ways and beliefs. My first “street bike” was a Triumph 750 Bonneville, then I bought my first Harley in 1983...a 1981 Sportster...Noo not the one I’m riding now!!! After riding it for a few years, I sold it and bought me a 70 Hard-Tail chopped Sporty...Yep, kinda partial to Sportsters...but due to life’s circumstances, I had to sell that one too. We all know that once riding is in your blood, it’s there to stay. So after a few years without being in the wind, I bought the 81 Sporty that I presently ride. I go to all the bike shows, runs, rallies, camp-outs, etc. that I possibly can.(raising 2 teenage daughters alone consumes some time too!!!), so if you know of anything happening in or around the area, let me know...(my contact info is in the Thunder Roads Crew section of the mag). I’m always looking for somewhere to ride to and something to do. Again, I’m looking forward to covering the territory for Thunder Roads Mid-Atlantic magazine and hope to see you with your knees in the breeze and the wind in your face. If I can be of any assistance, do not hesitate to contact me.

Steve “Bagz” Bagwell

My name is Bea Falls. I grew up in Indiana, with 3 brothers and 2 sisters. I now live in Madison Heights with my hus-band Ronnie and 2 minn pinns, Goliath and Jezzabelle. I own HOPAR’S Cycles along with my partner, Steve Mirza-yan. I have 5 children and 7 grandchildren. I love what I do and the people I get to meet. I have been riding for 30 years and I can say I got it honest. My mother and grandmother both rode. I have a 2006 Heritage Softail that was custom painted by “Kickin Kenny”, added a Mustang seat, some chrome of course, and painted Mickey Mouse on my horn cover. If you are ever in the Lynchburg area, stop by and say hi. We would love to meet you!!!Ride Safe!!! Bea

George Carlin’s Views on Aging

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we’re kids? If you’re less than 10 years old, you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions.

‘How old are you?’ ‘I’m four and a half!’ You’re never thirty-six and a half. You’re four and a half, going on five! That’s the key.

You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you back. You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead. ‘How old are you?’ ‘I’m gonna be 16!’ You could be 13, but hey, you’re gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life ! You become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony. YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!!

But then you turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk! He TURNED; we had to throw him out. There’s no fun now, you’re Just a sour-dumpling. What’s wrong? What’s changed? You BECOME 21, you TURN 30, then you’re PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes, it’s all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone.

But wait!!! You MAKE it to 60. You didn’t think you would! So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60. You’ve built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it’s a day-by-day thing; you HIT Wednesday! You get into your 80’s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn’t end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; ‘I Was JUST 92.’ Then a strange thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. ‘I’m 100 and a half!’ May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!

HOW TO STAY YOUNG 1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay them.

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.’ And the devil’s name is Alzheimer’s.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, what ever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER :Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. We all need to live life to its fullest each day!!

St. Judes Runby Dave Sutton

The Lynchburg-Roanoke motorcycling community continues their long legacy of helping those less fortunate than themselves. Bikers have especially big hearts when it comes to children. The April 19 poker run for St. Jude’s Childrens’ Hospital proved that the feeling has not changed. Over two hundred riders bought poker hands and t-shirts while enjoying a day of riding, music and fellowship.Billy Powell’s Ink Works and Hardcore Motorcycle Ministries teamed up to sponsor the event. The run started at Tree of Life Ministries in Lynchburg. After riding to the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, the run meandered to beautiful Smith Mountain Lake, then back to Lynchburg. Live bands entertained the participants at a day long event at Marilyn’s Cafe. Even afternoon thunder boomers did not dampen the spirits of the crowd. Everyone just seemed happy to help and to enjoy the beginnings of another riding season.

News Bytes News BytesNCOM CONVENTION RAISES THE BAR“Large & In Charge” was the theme of the 23rd annual NCOM Convention in Houston, Texas, and in living up to the hype it drew 1,640 attendees from across the country making it the largest gathering of bikers’ rights activists in the world! Held Mother’s Day weekend, May 8-11, 2008, this annual gathering featured meetings, seminars and group discussions focusing on safety issues, legal rights, legislative efforts and litigation techniques to benefit our right to ride and Freedom of the Road. Following the AIM Chief of Staffs meetings on Wednesday and an NCOM Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, the Convention kicked off Friday morning with the NCOM Legislative Task Force meeting and the AIM Attorney Conference. After-noon seminars included “Lobbying 101” and “New and Successful Programs in Bikerland”. Special Meetings were convened for “SMRO Presidents,” “Christian Unity Confer-ence,” “Women in Motorcycling,” “Black Clubs and Minor-ity Outreach,” and “Clean and Sober Roundtable.” The Confederation of Clubs General Patch Holder Meeting on Friday evening was the best attended to date, and featured representatives of over 50 COC’s from throughout North America. This year’s agenda was packed with interesting and thought-provoking sessions, including “Global Changes in the Laws Affecting Motorcyclists”, “Brothers Behind Bars”, “Defenders - A New Political Action Group”, a meet-ing of the American Biker Party and Slider Gilmore’s always informative and entertaining “The Golden Hour” seminar teaching bikers how to save each others’ lives. Topping off the weekend’s festivities was the traditional Silver Spoke Awards Banquet, recognizing the achievements and ac-complishments of our fellow riders. South Dakota State Senator Jim “Putt” Putnam entertained the crowd as the dinner speaker during the Silver Spoke Awards ceremony on Saturday evening with his homespun humor. This year’s Silver Spokes were awarded to: GOVERNMENT: Pennsyl-vania Supreme Court Justice Seamus McCaffery; MEDIA: Bill & Darlene Bish, publishers of Ridin’ On Motorcycle Magazine; LEGAL: Texas A.I.M. Attorney William Smith; ENTERTAINMENT: Musician Jimmy Vaughn, who ignited the crowd with his new song about Freedom; SPECIAL RECOGNITION: Laura Reid, NCOM Board Secretary; and the RON ROLOFF LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD was presented to longtime freedom fighter Dave Breakiron of ABATE of Delaware. Many thanks to ABATE of Texas, the Texas Motorcycle Rights Association (TMRA-II) and the Texas Confederations of Clubs for hosting this record-set-ting event. Thanks also go out to the Texas Confederations of Clubs and Soldiers for Jesus M/C for hosting Hospitality Suites during non-meeting times throughout the weekend. The 2008 NCOM Convention was dedicated to the memory of Waldo Stuart, Longview Tom and Michael “Twanger” Hays. Make plans now to attend next year’s 24th Annual NCOM Convention next Mother’s Day weekend, May 7-10, 2009, in Reno, Nevada. For further information, contact NCOM at (800) 525-5355. STUDY CLAIMS HELMET LAWS MAY SAVE LIVES, BUT NOT VERY MANY A new study reported in the American Journal of Public Health finds that the repeal of motorcycle helmet requirements for adults has been associated with

an increase in motorcycle fatalities, beyond the general increase that has been seen throughout the country in the last decade or so, although the impact they found looks pretty modest: On average, when compared to state experi-ence with no helmet mandate, universal helmet laws were associated with an 11.1% reduction in motorcyclist fatality rates, whereas rates in states with partial coverage statutes (applying only to riders younger than 21) were not statisti-cally different from those with no helmet law. Furthermore, in the states in which recent repeals of universal coverage have been instituted, the motorcyclist fatality rate increased by an average of 12.2% over what would have been pro-jected had universal coverage been maintained. In terms of fatalities prevented each year, the effect estimated by this study is not very impressive. In 2004, for example, “an esti-mated 135 (or 5.8%) fewer fatalities would have occurred” in the 31 states without universal helmet laws had those states forced adult motorcyclists to wear head protection. That’s just a handful of fatalities per state each year. “Even the undramatic results of this study may over-estimate the impact of helmet laws,” wrote Jacob Sullum in the April 1, 2008 online edition of “reason” magazine, citing in particu-lar that researchers did not take into consideration miles traveled. Some anti-helmet-law activists argue that helmets, on balance, decrease motorcycle safety by making riders more reckless, making their heads heavier, or impairing their hearing and peripheral vision. According to this study, helmet laws reduce fatalities to some extent, but as Sullum points out; “It just does not seem to be a very big effect, which is one reason opponents of these laws have been so successful at rolling them back and preventing legislators from re-imposing them.” WORLD’S FIRST VISION ZERO MOTORCYCLE ROAD OPENS IN EUROPE “A milestone for motorcycle safety,” said FEMA President Hans Petter Strifeldt as he officially opened the World’s First Vision Zero Road for motorcycles along RV 32 in Norway on May 7, 2008. The motorcycle community has long expressed concerns over “Vision Zero”, the strategy in which road authorities have envi-sioned how to achieve zero deaths and zero serious injuries on the roads. These concerns are due to the vision depend-ing primarily on bans and regulations instead of adaptation of the road environment to suit all road users - motorcyclists included. Viewed by European government officials as high-risk road users, motorcycles have been all but excluded from the Vision Zero document. The Vision Zero document has first and foremost given anti-motorcycle campaigners an opening to propose a ban on motorcycles as these, they claim, are not compatible with a Vision Zero. But today, with the opening of this motorcycle friendly road, these claims have been effectively quashed, stated the President of the Federation of European Motorcycle Associations (FEMA). The Vision Zero Motorcycle Road is the brainchild of two passionate engineers at the regional Road Authorities, Jan Petter Lyng and Bjarn R. Kirste, who have successfully designed the road exactly as the motorcyclists themselves recommend. It is not much that is needed to make a motor-cycle-friendly road with regard to preventing injuries in case of accidents: Crash barriers fitted with a sub-rail, forgiving

side terrain, well thought out placing of signposts, cutting down sight-hindering vegetation - all in all small modifica-tions and investments that are beneficial for all road users, including bicycles and cars. The price tag for modifying these 15 kilometres of road is estimated to 630,000 euros.“The importance of this stretch of road in the middle of Norway cannot be overrated,” said FEMA in announcing the opening. “It is the first Vision Zero Motorcycle road, not only in Norway, not only in Europe, but in the world.” As the rep-resentative for Europe’s road riding motorcyclists, FEMA will do what it can to promote this road to other nation’s road authorities as an example of what is possible to achieve with relatively small means, FEMA President Hans Petter Strifeldt concluded. CAR AIRBAGS CAN PROTECT MOTORCYCLISTSAsk any motorcyclist what the most dangerous part of riding is and most of them will tell you; “People in cars that aren’t paying attention.” Not too long ago, an airbag suit was developed in an effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries to motorcycle riders. Now, Autoliv Inc., out of Sweden has developed a new airbag system for automo-biles that could impact fatality numbers by reducing the impact on riders. The system uses an airbag mounted in the A-Pillar of the car. When a front end impact is detected, the airbag will inflate, covering most of the car’s hood and some of the windshield. Studies show that many injuries and fatalities could be avoided if this simple measure was taken. In fact, the Dutch Cycling Federation estimates that over 60 lives could be saved and over 1500 serious injuries could be avoided every year by using these airbags. The system won’t only serve motorcycle riders however, it will cover pedal bikes and pedestrians as well. Obviously these accidents will be at a much lower speed, but the impact on the hood will still be reduced by a significant amount. No official word on where or when the system will be installed, but with so much potential, it shouldn’t take long. ROW LEGISLATION PASSED IN MARYLANDLeather jackets mingled with pin-striped suits as motorcy-clists arrived at the State House to see their driving-safety bill signed into law by Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley.“The bill will impose a six-month suspension, a $1,000 fine or both on drivers who injure or kill somebody by violating road right-of-way laws,” reported the Washington Post.Members of ABATE of Maryland have fought for the past five years to pass the legislation, but the fight became per-sonal in 2006 after the driver of a sport utility vehicle was involved in an accident that killed their state director, Marty Schultz. “As things would have it, we proceeded on with the bill,” said Gary R. “Pappy” Boward, chairman of ABATE of Maryland Inc. “Everyone was getting very involved legisla-tively, this was [Mr. Schultz’s] assignment.” Pappy told the Post that many bikers were disappointed when the person who struck Mr. Schultz received a minimal fine - less than $100 - and no other penalty. The right-of-way bill passed the House and Senate unanimously this year, and had the support of Maryland’s Motor Vehicle Administration. The bill applies to all vehicles, but the motorcyclists advocated for it because bikes are tough to see at intersections. The MVA reported 17,312 “failure-to-yield” accidents in 2006, result-

ing in 81 deaths and 8,015 injuries. BIKERS BANNED FROM ATLANTA HOT SPOT Metro Atlanta motorcyclists have been banned from Atlantic Station, a popular dining and retail district that no longer allows riders to drive through or park there. Atlantic Station officials say they took action after facing ongoing problems. “They continually don’t abide by the code of conduct down here, continually rev their engines really loud,” said Brian Leary of Atlantic Station in a television interview with Fox 5.Atlantic Station started telling motorcyclists about the change last month and will soon post signs and start ticket-ing violators. “I know it’s tough. We do definitely apologize to the motorcycle owners and riders but in the meantime we are making the change,” said Leary. AUSTRALIA TO OUTLAW “BIKIES”Police soon will have the power to “squash” bikie gangs and force them to move elsewhere after the Government’s controversial anti-bikie legislation recently passed through Parliament. Police Minister Paul Holloway said SA (South Australia) was on the verge of having the nation’s and perhaps the world’s toughest anti-bikie laws. “These are the laws that police have asked for and, finally, we are able to ensure police have exactly what they need to take on these criminal bikie gangs,” he said. When the laws are gazetted, it will be illegal for anyone to associate with known bikies six or more times a year. Bikies also will be banned from spe-cific locations. The Serious and Organised Crime (Control) Bill 2007 also will enable Police Commissioner Mal Hyde to obtain orders from the Attorney-General, Michael Atkin-son, declaring bikie gangs illegal. The Government “hoped” to have the laws in place by July 1. The legislation was criticized as draconian by other states at a March meeting of State and Federal Government ministers. The legislation now goes back to the Lower House for final approval. WEIRD NEWS: LAWMAKERS GO NUTS OVER FAKE TESTICLES With hot-button issues like immigration, the environment, and the failing real estate market crowding the “national conversation” these days, it’s nice to see a few ballsy Floridians with the cojones to take on important issues like fake testicles. The brave Florida state Senate passed an amendment to a transportation bill that would levy a $60 fine against anyone with TruckNutz or generic-made fake testicles dangling from their rear bumpers. Of course, some naysayers are arguing that there are more important things to legislate against than fake balls, which are harmless decorations for your truck or motorcycle for those who suffer a genital inferiority complex. Sen. Carey Baker, who proposed the amendment, acknowledged his critics’ concerns and said that “I do have more important things to do this session. But I think this is important, too.” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “Life is a grindstone - whether it grinds you down, or polishes you up - depends on what you’re made of.”Jacob Braude

The Joker’s Wild

The Joker’s Wild

First-year students at Texas A&M’s Vet school were at-tending their first anatomy class, with a real dead cow. They all gathered around the surgery table with the body cov-ered with a white sheet. The professor started the class by telling them, “In Veterinary Medicine it is essential to have two important qualities as a doctor: The first is that you not be disgusted by anything involving the animal body”. For an example, the professor pulled back the sheet, stuck his finger in the butt of the dead cow, withdrew it and stuck his finger in his mouth. “Go ahead and do the same thing,” he told his students. The students freaked out, hesitated for several minutes. But eventually took turns sticking a finger in the butt of the dead cow and sucking on it. When every-one finished, the professor looked at them and said, “The second most important quality is observation. I stuck in my middle finger and sucked on my index finger. So, learn to pay attention. Life’s tough, and it’s even tougher if you’re stupid.

At the end of the tax year, the IRS sent an inspector to audit the books of a synagogue. While he was checking the books, he said to the Rabbi, ‘I notice you buy a lot of candles. What do you do with the candle drippings?’ ‘Good question,’ noted the Rabbi. ‘We save them and send them back to the candle makers, and every now and then they send us a free box of candles.’ ‘Oh,’ replied the auditor, somewhat disappointed that his unusual question had a practical answer. But on he went, in his obnoxious way: What about all these matzo (bread) purchases? What do you do with the crumbs?’ ‘Ah, yes,’ replied the Rabbi, realizing that the inspector was trying to trap him with an unanswerable question. ‘We collect them and send back to the manufacturers, and every now and then they send a free box of matzo balls.’ ‘I see,’ replied the auditor, think-ing hard about how he could fluster the know-it-all Rabbi. ‘Well, Rabbi, what do you do with all the leftover foreskins from the circumcisions you perform?’ ‘Here, too, we do not waste,’ answered the Rabbi. ‘We save up all the foreskins and ship them to the Internal Revenue Service, and about once a year they send us a complete dick.’

In church, one particular four-year-old prayed, ‘And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets.’ * Amen & Hallelujah to that simple summarization.

This is an actual portion of an ABC interview between a female broadcaster and General Cosgrove who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military headquarters. FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Cosgrove, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base? GENERAL COSGROVE: We’re going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery and shooting. FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Shooting! That’s a bit irresponsible, isn’t it? GENERAL COSGROVE: I don’t see why, they’ll be properly supervised on the rifle range. FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Don’t you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children? GENERAL COSGROVE: I don’t see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm. FEMALE INTERVIEWER: But you’re equipping them to become violent killers. GENERAL COSGROVE: Well, Ma’am, you’re equipped to be a prostitute, but you’re not one, are you? The radio went silent and the interview ended.

The old man placed order for one hamburger, French fries and a drink. He unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half, placing one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them . As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them were looking over and whispering. Obviously they were thinking, ‘That poor old couple - all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.’ As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table and politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said, they were just fine - they were used to sharing every-thing. People closer to the table noticed the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again, the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said ‘No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.’ Finally, as the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked ‘What is it you are waiting for?’ She gently replied, “the teeth.”

Greetings Friends, Family & Associates,

My son Justin arrived from Baghdad , Iraq at Norfolk International Airport on Tuesday Afternoon, April 15, 2008 to A Patriot Guard Riders “Welcome Home” requested by Wendy. On Friday, April 18, 2008, Justin and I hit the road on our bikes (his a 2006 Triumph Sprint ST and me a 2007 Midnight Silverado RoadStar)… headed for many points in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. Images are the Welcome Home and some time around Deals Gap and Tail of the Dragon. We logged a little over a 1000 miles getting there and back and almost another 1000 while we were there, for a grand total of 1850 miles. We had Saturday morning (April 19th) rain showers, which was cleared up by 12:30… and left plenty of time to Ride the Twisties of the Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohola Skyway. We also road the numerous other roads in that area, such as The Hellbender, Little River Road, a side trip over to Maggie Valley and the Wheels of Time Museum . Departing took us north up to US-421, known as “The Snake” and Shady Valley, TN General Store. We even caught some decent twisties on the western end of US-58 as we headed east. We arrived home on Wednesday Night at 9:30 on April 23, 2008.Couple of notes if you ever venture to that side of North Carolina ….great accommodations at Two Wheel Inn, Robbinsville, NC…Robbinsville , NC is a dry county, therefore, you’ll ride approximately 20 miles for a beer at the end of the day’s ride. Ride / Drive Safe.

The White Oak Band Rock music is the name, guitar anthems are their game. Game on! That’s right. Fans in Northern Virginia look no further. The White Oak Band is in keeping with the real rock persuasion at a venue near you. No one can deny that these guys have the edge that hooked us on the traditional, popular tunes. Once they crank it up, the energy of their live performance is as strong as the night is long. There’s no hidden meaning to the band’s name. It’s the Virginia township where they rehearse and record. White Oak started a few years ago, as a weekly jam at Jarle’s (Lead Guitar & Vocals), recording studio. It was a break from the same old songs, gig after gig, with other bands. These days they keep evolving and have picked up the momentum of writing and creating originals. Specializing in Southern, Classic and Modern Rock, The White Oak Band prides itself on being versatile enough to fit any venue. Their cleverly designed sites on the web are the next best thing to seeing them live because the pictures and videos of their shows are fun and entertaining. Check them out along with their show schedule at www.thewhiteoakband.com and myspace.com/whiteoakband and also at myspace.com/southerndrums. For RustyBrian Russell ‘Rusty’ Geouge, 31, passed away at home on Saturday, April

26, 2008. He was born on Sept. 13, 1976, in Asheville, N.C., and lived his life in Burnsville, N.C., Baltimore and Newport News.

Rusty was more than my Nephew. He was like a little brother. He enjoyed the outdoors and the Mountains of North Carolina, where he was born, the most. He was a biker, a four wheeler and a born Redneck. His biggest weakness though was antiques. He love the old shops along Rt. 58. He would walk ten miles to abandoned mining towns just to have a picture of and old truck or sign. He was a hand full since the day he was born. But he was the best Hand full you could have. With all my Love, Uncle Chris Holden (Coyote Killer)

In The DayBACK

Tattoo ofthe Month

With gasoline at $120+ a barrel, it’s no surprise that mo-torists are looking for lighter wheels. According to NADAgu-ides.com, the consumer Web site of the biggest publisher of vehicle pricing and specification information, that’s exactly what is happening. The company says that it has seen a re-cent spike in interest in motorcycles and scooters that can’t be explained solely by sea sonality.

The company says motorcycle-buying interest at NADA-guides.com saw a 48% jump in March 2008 versus March 2007. While NADA Guides concedes that sales of motor-cycles were down more than 7% at the end of 2007, and that sales are also sluggish so far this year, the interest is trending way above normal both for motorcycles and other products tracked by the firm.

Lenny Sims, motorcycle editor and VP/operations at NADAguides.com, says he isn’t seeing the same lift in inter-est for big-ticket recreational products with which motor-cycles usually compete. ‘People aren’t looking at buying travel-trailers and motor homes. While they aren’t buying bikes as their core primary transportation vehicle, we saw attention diverting from other ‘nice-to-have’ areas in the last six or eight months, and more consideration for motorcycle categories.’

The company defines an increase in motorcycle-buying interest as the number of new motorcycle prices provided to consumers at its Web site, with analysis for this study com-paring data from March 2007 to March 2008. The company also tracks boats, as well as recreation vehicles from ATVs to travel-trailers and RVs, as well as classic and collectible cars.

The study comes as gasoline in the Midwest is topping $3.75, with summer driving season (April through Septem-ber) predicted to be up 61 cents from last year--and with gasoline prices in some parts of the country expected to cross the $4-per-gallon threshold.

Ty van Hooydonk, who heads up product communications for Discover Today’s Motorcycling, part of the Motorcycle Industry Council, says he predicts sales will strengthen this year. Van Hooydonk, who lives in L.A. but doesn’t own a car (preferring his seven motorcycles), says the motorcycle is a perfectly viable alternative. ‘With gasoline heading to $4 a gallon in more and more places, you can expect people will take a good long look at two-wheeling again, as they did when gas prices boosted above $3 in 2005,’ he says.

He says scooters aren’t the only realm of the bike mar-ket that is seeing a lift. ‘The other category that has been benefiting from fuel prices has been dual-purpose bikes.’ That means motorcycles as happy on dirt as on roads. Van Hooydonk says the reason is that in addition to flexibility, dual-purpose bikes get 60 miles per gallon and better. And it is also a growing segment of the market, with new entrants like Honda’s CRF 230L, and Yamaha’s XT 250. ‘They are affordable and cheap to maintain,’ he says. Sims says this increase in buying interest, spurred by the knowledge of motorcycle fuel economy, should help offset sales declines of on-highway bikes in the coming months,

as consumers who research motorcycle values at NADAgu-ides.com--and who use the company’s motorcycle buying guide to compare bikes and to obtain specification informa-tion--start buying.

The company divided the most-researched bikes into short-range, mid-range and long-range commuters. In the first group, scooters and smaller bikes predominated with Yamaha Majesty 400, Honda Silver Wing and Suzuki’s Burgman scooter dominating. Among mid-range bikes, Hon-da Shadow Spirit 750, Suzuki Boulevard S50 and Kawasaki Vulcan 500 were the top bikes. For long-range bikes, cruis-ers like Harley-Davidson Electra Glide, Honda Gold Wing (with airbag) and Yamaha Royal Star Venture were the top bikes sought.

Sims says scooters and short-range commuter bikes are seeing the most activity. ‘We can’t quantify sales yet, but the thing that stood out was that there’s an increase in inter-est, [more so] in short-range commuter bikes than mid- and long-range.’ Sims says the increase for motorcycles is not a merely cyclical lift as warmer weather gets people think-ing about the motorcycle, car, RV or boat they’ve always wanted. ‘We have been trending this for 10 years, but typi-cally the increase is across the board, across all products. But, while all of the other verticals we can compare this to--boats, cars and other items we have on site--are trend-ing normally, we saw an extreme spike in motorcycles.’ He predicts that interest will translate to sales 30 to 90 days down the road.

A couple years ago I was out enjoying a long, sun-ny weekend ride on my own. I had a very enjoy-able time and was heading back home as the sun was going down and decided to stop for a bite to eat. When I returned to my bike, it wouldn’t start. Not a great way to end a ride, especially when you’re not home yet.

It didn’t take much to determine the problem. I had a bad battery, and it had decided that enough was enough. Simple problem, all I needed to do was pop the seat and get to the battery. I could get someone to give me a jump and I’d be on my way home (and off in the morning to buy a new battery).

Simple that is, until I discovered that I couldn’t remove the rear thumb screw holding the seat in place. I had this nice tool kit in my saddle bag. Now no one has ever accused me of being a quali-fied motorcycle mechanic, but even I can remove a seat… But not without the right screwdriver to do it with. Oh I owned one. I could even see just where it was… sitting on the shelf in my shed. I had used it for something a few days earlier and forgotten to put it back.

Amidst all my other tools, that screwdriver had just become the most valuable tool in my tool kit! Noth-ing else in my kit was going to remove that screw. Fortunately, someone was there who had just what I needed, and in no time I was back on the road and heading home.

But that story reminds me that, just like that tool, we all have a purpose. Each of us has been de-signed by God for something that we are uniquely qualified to do. No tool is better or worse than another: Each has its designed purpose and is perfect for that task. And the same is true for each of us.

Never question your value to God. You are impor-tant to Him: So important that He sent His only son, Jesus, to pay the price for your salvation. All you need to do is allow God to show you what your purpose is. Just like any other tool, we become useful only when we allow ourselves to be used in

the hands of the Master Mechanic.

I may not be the sharpest or shiniest tool in God’s tool box, but thankfully, in His hands, I can be used in mighty ways. And so can you, give it a try and see for yourself.
