A message from the DirectorThere’s something for everyone in this Ticket Seller issue – Keno-focused retailers, instant ticket retailers and everyone in between.

We’ll begin with activities that bring customers in and out of your business to enjoy the season’s best events. When they stop by, tell them about the Ohio Lottery’s iHeartRadio Music Festival promotion, which runs July 11 through Aug. 15. The Ohio Lottery will offer four trips to the fun-filled festival in Las Vegas this fall that include three days of concerts by emerging and well-known artists in rock, country, hip hop, dance and pop music.

Customers who make a $5 purchase of Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5 or Rolling Cash 5 can enter their non-winning tickets for a special drawing through MyLotto Rewards®. See page 3 for details and display the promotion’s special festival poster at your Lottery customer counter today.

You’ll see the Ohio Lottery out and about at a number of special events across the state this summer, including the Ohio State Fair. The big, family-friendly event includes a special Ohio Lottery Day Aug. 5, allowing Ohio Lottery customers who present a non-winning ticket at the gate to receive a special fair discount.

This month, the Ohio Lottery begins its new instant ticket sales strategy. Timely instant ticket activation increases sales; so, we encourage you to activate new instant ticket deliveries the day of or day following delivery. New game deliveries now take place on Wednesday, following a six-week cycle. Use this time to review your instant ticket inventory and sales strategy with your Lottery sales representative. Set a few attainable goals to improve your Lottery business and earn the opportunity to receive Ohio Lottery premium games.

In this month’s Taking Care of Business segment, we’ve provided an overview of how to load paper into the Lottery’s ticket vending machine (TVM). If you have a new manager or employees who help maintain Lottery operations, you’ll want to share this tip sheet with them. Would you like further training? Our sales representatives and regional trainers would be happy to provide assistance.

We wish you and your employees a very happy summer. Let’s all make the most of it!

Sincerely,

Dennis Berg, DirectorThe Ohio Lottery

Taking Care of Business:

Ready to load paper into your ticket vending machine(TVM)?Do this first1. Remove the paper and adhesive off the end of the roll, removing

one whole turn of the roll. (It’s about 22 inches)2. Then, cut the paper straight across, discarding the excess.

Why remove the end of the roll? Discarding the end of the roll removes the adhesive on the paper, which can damage machine gears.

Start the loading process1. Unlock the vending machine door and enter your password. The

paper handler is located on the bottom, right hand side of the machine.

2. Place the paper roll on the spindle. Make sure the paper roll is fully over the holding lip and comes in contact with the green spindle base. That activates the sensor.

3. The paper roll should feed from the bottom up as shown. Pull the paper back, up and over the roller, through the opening behind the paper carriage and over the metal plate. The thermal side of the paper will be on top.

4. The green bar at the top of the paper carriage is the paper cutter and holder. Open the green bar by pushing it up and back.

5. Once the green bar is lifted, thread the paper underneath the green bar. The paper should be flat on both sides. Once you can see the paper coming through, press down evenly on the green bar so both corners of the bar click closed. The green bar on the top of the paper mechanism The green bar at the top of the paper mechanism securely holds and cuts your ticket paper stock. Note: when feeding paper under the green bar, make sure the paper does not go past the guide that will feed it through the front of the printing mechanism.

6. The printer should now feed, cut and eject a piece of paper almost five inches long. The paper is now properly loaded. If the paper does not feed, cut and eject, please reload the paper.

7. Both the status and power lights on the side of the paper mechanism will be solid if the paper has loaded properly.

Need to remove a roll of paper from your vending machine?Press up and back on the green bar to release the paper from the loading mechanism. Remove the roll from the spindle, holding the paper roll close to the paper core so the paper roll comes off evenly.

Paper maintenance, including proper loading and

unloading of paper and paper jams are the top reasons retailers call the Ohio Lottery’s technical call center.

By Marie Kilbane Seckers, Communications

Benny Leonard, the owner of Coaches Bar & Grill in Columbus, calls his bar a “throwback” to a time when neighborhood bars reigned supreme. It’s not hard to see why. He even has an autograph signed by Ted Danson for the hit comedy series, Cheers, posted by the bar.

His successful, neighborhood sports bar is also one of Columbus’ top Keno destinations.

After dropping his children off at school, he’s at the bar by mid-morning, using the time to prepare for his first round of customers at 11:30 a.m. Now and again, he’ll have a few regulars who stop by before he officially opens for the day.

“I might give you a rag, but you can come in, have a cup of coffee with me and play Keno,” he says in his laid back, friendly style. He calls these early morning hours “the most peaceful time of the day.”

“It’s a close-knit group,” says Lottery sales representative Kathleen Kizer.

When one of his regulars won a sizeable amount of money playing Keno one day, and then $10,000 the next, his patron bought lunch for everyone at Coaches. It was, Benny says, pretty festive.

“It’s the little things like that. It’s all a part of being a neighborhood bar,” he says. As a local sports bar and restaurant, he knows his competition can be tough.

“To stand out, you have to be a little bit cleaner, a little bit better,” says Benny. As a sports bar, he makes sure his customers have comfortable seating and good view of the TVs. And, he enjoys watching customers when all eyes are on the TV screens during major tournament play.

He calls the recent college basketball tournament season a “highly anticipated time.”

“The excitement of the tournament captures a lot of attention and Keno play, especially as the games get started,” he says. He made sure staff pointed out the Lottery’s special Keno Mania promotion too.

He calls the addition of Lottery games “seamless.”

“It’s one of the easiest transitions to make,” Benny says. Still, he makes a point of emphasizing the importance of accounting. “You have to be good with managing cash,” he says.

Any customer who asks can play Keno or other Lottery games through the MP vending machine or one of Benny’s wait staff. Have a question about Keno? Benny and his staff are happy to show customers how to play. They’ll also show them the ins and outs of the MP vending machine. They even have a “Keno ambassador,” a regular Keno player who loves helping customers with questions.

Benny, who worked as a bartender before purchasing Coaches in 1994, has a staff of about 18, mostly part-time employees.

Thursdays is his night with the guys. You’ll see him having fun at Coaches surrounded by friends and family, including his father and brother, and even his attorney and barber.

“It’s the people who make the business,” he says.

Neighborhood bar builds bond with loyal customers. Benny Leonard, owner of Coaches Bar & Grill in Columbus, knows it’s the little things that make a business like his stand out. Coaches Bar and Grill is also a top Keno destination. From left to right: Lottery sales representative Kathleen Kizer, Coaches bar manager Arun Shankar, and owner Benny Leonard.

Keys to Success• Coaches Bar & Grill has an area set aside for

Keno vending. The bar keeps its winners top-of-mind and up-to-date with a winners wall organized and updated with the help of Lottery sales representative Kathleen Kizer.

• Keno play often turns into tips for servers. It’s an added plus for his employees.

• Managing cash is important. “You have to come up with a set amount of cash to keep in the bar (to cash winners) and keep on top of it,” says Benny.

• His “go to” Lottery terminal report is the shift report; so, he can see the sales and cashes taking place during each shift. His customers love the terminal’s “Hot Numbers” report, showing the most recent past drawings.

• Let customers know about your other Lottery games too. When the Powerball jackpot broke $1 billion, he placed a sign in the entranceway to let customers know that they could play Powerball at his location without the wait. Many customers, he said, didn’t realize all draw games are available through MP vending.

Honoring a place that’s like family for patronsLottery player and Coaches’ fan, Jill Valentine Simmons, built a miniature of Coaches Bar and Grill of Columbus to honor the bar and its loyal patrons. It’s so exact that regulars recognize their seats at the bar, including personal items and typical refreshments.

Jill has been a Coaches’ regular for more than 10 years. She says that it’s a place where “everyone knows your name” and the staff, including owner Benny Leonard, and other familiar faces are like family.

Jill found miniature items to replicate the bar from as far away as England and Israel. After working on the project for about six months and spending $7,200, Jill presented Benny with the Coaches miniature model in November 2013. Check out YouTube to learn more about her project: http://tinyurl.com/go3tohz
