THE INVALUABLE SNOOD • Besides the fleshy wattle that hangsbelow a turkey’s chin, a male turkey also has a fleshyappendagethathangsoveritsbeakcalleda snood. The snood indicates virility and stretch-es to twice its length during the macho strut-ting preceding mating. The ladies prefer a long snood. The snood also plays an important role intherivalrybetweenmales.Maleswillaccessthe length of a rival’s snood before engaging in battle. One researcher wanted to find out justhow important the snood is. He constructed two turkey decoys and placed them three feet apart in asmallarena.Eachofthedecoysstoodnexttoapile of birdseed. The decoys were identical except that one had a large snood and the other’s snood was small. One at a time, the researcher placed 28 young male turkeys into the yard and waited to see what would happen. Only four of the 28 turkeys took birdseed from the pile in front of the decoy with a huge snood, while 17 stole seed from the decoy with the smaller snood. Seven of the real turkeys stole birdseed from both decoys. The researcher theorized that the length of thesnood may be determined by the bird’s testoster-one level.WILD vs DOMESTIC • One difference betweenwild and do-mestic turkeys is that the domestic variety is unable tofly, whereaswildbirdsareextremelygoodfliers.Theyneednorunwayfortakeoff, canclimb vertically, are capable of attaining speeds of40m.p.h.(64km)intheair,andcanglideforamile(1.6km)withoutflutteringawing.TURKEY HISTORY •TurkeysoriginatedinCentralandNorthAmerica.Archeologistshave found turkey fos-silsover10millionyearsold.They’retheonlybreed of poultry native to the Western Hemi-sphere. Adrenals: Many Roles If youwere to take a test and it asked, “what organor gland is part of the sugar-controlmechanism in the body, is responsible for the management of energy, blood pressure, eye sensitivity tolight, thefightorflightresponse, inflammation, weightloss, sleepandsugarcravings”,wouldyouhave guessed the adrenal glands? The adrenal glands are part of the renal system. They sit on top of each kidney and are re-sponsible for the hormonal functions of the kidney and other systems. They produce very important hormones such as epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine, cortisol, aldosterone, testosterone, DHEA,DHEAS,androstenedioneandestrogens.Thesehormonescontrolnumerousfunctionsinthebody. When they fail to do their job adequately, symptoms start to manifest. Fatigueandweightgainaretwoofthemaincomplaintsseenindoctors’officesallacrosstheU.S. today. Despite the dramatic role the adrenals play in management of these two areas, they get less attention than they deserve. There is so much that can be done to improve adrenal health, which in turn rewards us with more energy and greater ability to lose weight. Ourbodyisanamazingmachine.Itwillsubmittomanyinsults-acclimating,modifying,andreadjusting function from one system to another to try to keep some semblance of healthy function beforeitfinallybreaksdownandfrustratesuswithasymptompicturewedon’tunderstand.ThankGodforthisamazingbodyofours!Ithasanaturalredundancybuiltinsowhenonesystemisweak, another can take over. For quite some time the body will manage, but eventually, just as any machine that is overworked, especially if not maintained properly, it will break down. We call this breakdown a symptom. The body will tell us in many ways (symptoms) that something is wrong. We’ve just never been taught how to listen to it and identify what’s wrong until it is in a crisis. The adrenals are one area that is frequently just under the radar of a crisis almost universally today. Trying to alert us with symptoms such as fatigue, soft and excessive weight gain around the middle, compromised ability to cope with stressful or even everyday events, disrupted sleep, hor-monal imbalance and many other ways. We are not taught that we can support adrenal function with simplemodificationsofeverydayactivities.Wearenottaughtthattherestorationoffunctionisevenpossible, and when achieved, energy and good sleep are restored, weight loss can kick in, and life seems much more bearable.

Should I let my cat/dog have a litter before she is spayed?

Unless you are a professional responsible breeder, there’s no reason for a female cat or dog to have even one litter. It won’t make her a better companion,

Q: What exactly does “spay” mean?

A: Spay is the common term for the medical term ovariohysterectomy. In this surgery the pet'sovariesanduterusareremoved.Thereis no evidence that a pet suffers from any per-sonality or emotional harm by having their ovaries removed. The uterus is also removed to insure that it does not become a source of infection. If the surgeon simply tied or obstructed the Fallopian tubes (the channel where the eggs must pass into the uterus) in order to make the female dog or cat sterile, she would still come into heat, attract males, and attempt to breed. Experience has shown that the bestprocedure is to perform a complete ovari-ohysterectomy.

Spayingfemalespriortotheirfirstheatcy-cle which usually occurs at 5-6 months old, nearly eliminates the risk of breast cancer and totally prevents uterine infections and uterine cancer. Help prevent future homeless pets.Spay/Neuter for a Brighter Future

Hospitalized Vets Need Holi-day Cheer If your veterans service group is plan-ning tomake a “Santa” visit to theward of alocal veterans hospital, here is your to-do list to make the process go smoothly. •Corralyourcrewandgetcommitmentsfortimeandspecifictasks. •ContactVolunteerServicesatthemedi-cal center and ask if they’d like you to be re-sponsible for a holiday party for a whole ward, or for a list of veterans who have no local family. Winter Workouts at Home I recently purchased a small, inexpensive manual treadmill. Unlike the electric ones, this one doesn’t need to be within cord distance of a wall plug, and it’s not so heavy that I can’t move it. It goes at the speed I set with my own legs. Anditdidn’tcostthemanyhundredsofdollarsthat an electric treadmill does. If you’re in good health (and your doctor approves), with only a few pieces of equipment, you can get in mild workouts this winter without having to go to the gym when it’s cold or wet outside.Consider acquiring a few of these: •Handweights:Startsmall, unlessyou’vealready been working out at the gym on a regular basis.A3-poundor5-poundweightmightbeallyou need to get started. •”Forseniors”workoutvideos:Ifyou’renot sure about a treadmill, look for a workout videothatemphasizeswalkinginplace. • If you have room, think about a sit-down pedaler like a recumbent bicycle instead of a treadmill. They even make these with only the pedal part, which you use while sitting in a chair. Some of them can even be used for your arms, with the peddler put on a chair in front of you. • Squeeze balls for hand and fingerstrength. •Wrist or ankleweights. Tidbits® of CDA Page 15Dear Auntie M., Mywifeisanagger. She’s always been critical but since she’s gotten older it has become a constant. She nags at me, she nags at the kids and grandkids. Heck, she even nags at the dog. I’m looking at retir-ing soon, and the thought of being home with her 24/7 is enough to make me go out for a pack of cigarettes and never come back. (I’m a non-smoker.) Any suggestions on how I can dealwith this without becoming the no account bad guysheaccusesmeofbeing?AtMyWitsEndinCataldoDear At My Wits End, This sounds like a very trying and dif-ficult situation. At its best, nagging is a formof love. (Have youfinished your homework, have you brushed your teeth, you need to get a haircut, etc.) When it goes beyond caring it becomes a ‘love buster.’ When nagging turnsinto verbal castration and emasculation resent-mentsoonsetsinandlovefliesoutthewindow.An aggressive nagger is never satisfied. Theyare in pain and they want everyone around them in pain, too. In aggressive cases something is wrong - it could be biochemical or emotional or hormonal or compulsive; it is beyond their con-trol.Iwouldstartwithathoroughphysicalfirst.Speak with her doctor privately about her behav-iors and your concerns.
