Continental islands lie on the shelf of a continent, for ex- ample, Greenland, which lies on the shelf of North America, and Great Britain on that of Eu- rope. Oceanic islands do not sit on a continental shelf. Most, such as the Hawaiian Islands, were formed by volcanic activity. The Hawaiian Is- lands, a 137-island chain, are the exposed peaks of a massive undersea mountain range. They were visited by British explorer Captain James Cook in 1778, and he dubbed them the Sandwich Islands after his friend, the Fourth Earl of Sand- wich, John Montagu. • Each of the eight main Hawaiian Is- lands has a nickname. The largest, Hawaii, is of course, the Big Island. Next in size, Maui, is the Valley Isle, followed by Oahu, the Gathering Place. Fourth in size, Kauai is the Garden Isle, Molokai is the Friendly Isle, Lanai is nicknamed the Pineapple Isle, Niihau is the Forbidden Isle, and the smallest of the eight, Kaho’olawe is the Target Isle. turn the page for more!

Q: What exactly does “neuter” mean?

A:Neuteristhecommontermforcastration. In this surgery the fibrous coverings of thetesticles are incised and each testicle is re-moved after securely tying off the blood ves-sels that attach to each testicle. Of course this is done under anesthesia. To simply do a vasectomy to render the male sterile would not alleviate scent marking, urge to breed, territorial defense, fighting,roamingandothertestosteronedriv-enbehaviors.Eveninguarddogsandhunt-ing dogs, many owners report improved be-havior and manageability when the dog has been neutered. Count your Blessings:by:SusanAshleyMD In this season of Thanksgiving, it is im-portant to remember all the things that we are thankful for, especially for your health. There are abundant studies that show that showing gratitudeproducesnumeroushealthbenefits. In studies comparing those who focus more on the hassles and stresses of life rather than the blessings they were thankful for, the groups showing gratitude felt better about their lives overall, were more optimistic for the fu-ture, and reported fewer health problems. Dai-ly writing, making lists of the things for which we’re grateful leads to an even greater increase in gratitude. In patients with neuromuscular diseases, the gratitude group reported getting more qual-ity sleep and feeling more satisfaction in their lives. Gratitude also has a protective effect against heartattacks.Studyingpeoplewhohavehadaheart attack, researchers found that those patients whosawbenefitsandgainsfromtheirheartat-tack, such as becoming more appreciative of life, experienced a lower risk of having another heart attack. The research on gratitude challenges the idea of a “set point” for happiness, a belief that, justasourbodyhasasetpointforweight, eachperson may have a genetically-determined level of happiness. The set point concept is support-ed by research that shows that people return to a characteristic level of happiness a short time after both unusually good and unusually bad events. But the research on gratitude suggeststhat people can move their set point upward to some degree, enough to have a measurable ef-fect on both their outlook and their health. In my line of business, I see people who are chal-lenged every day with physical and emotional disorders, and time and time again, those that rise above their situation are more optimistic and show gratitude for even the smallest things.Sothisseason, practicegratefulthinkingtoreapthe emotional, physical and interpersonal ben-efitsoflife-orasthesonggoes:“Countyourblessings, name them one by one”.
