He holds the all- time scoring record for college basketball with 3,667 points in 83 games, averaging 44.2 points per game. TIDBITS® CHOWS DOWN ON

INTERESTING EDIBLESby Sarah Bates

Food nourishes your body just like Tidbits nourishes your brain! Get a double helping with these bits and bites that you might not have known about the things we eat and drink!• Did you know there are over 300 different

varieties of honey in North America alone? Honey, a natural energy restorer, was not only used by ancient cultures but it has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. There have also been discoveries of 4,500 year old Egyptians carvings which are some of the earliest depictions of bee keeping.

• Do you know what a pluot is? It’s a complex hybrid between a plum and an apricot. It’s traits tend to be more plum-like, with a smooth skin. They are very sweet and intense in flavor and very juicy. They are not to be confused with an aprium, which is also a plum/apricot hybrid that is 1/4th plum and 3/4th apricot. Another plum/apricot hybrid is the plumcot. What’s a plum+apricot+peach? That one’s called a Peacotum.

• The island nation of Grenada in the Caribbean was named for the pomegranate. So was grenadine syrup and the grenade. All come from the Latin root word punica granatum, which means pomegranate.

BREAK THE ICE (continued):• Mauna Kea is one of the few places on earth where you can go from

sea level to 14,000 feet (4267 m) in about two hours. This presents a serious risk for altitude sickness as there is about 40% less oxygen at its summit.

• The observatory at Mauna Kea Visitor Information Center had over 16,000 people looking through its telescopes in 2009, the International Year of Astronomy.

• The highest point in Canada is Mount Logan in Yukon Province at 19,551 ft. (5,959 m). The lowest high point in Canada is on Prince Edward Island in the Bonshaw Hills. It is only 466 feet (142 m) above sea level. On this island you are hardly ever more than five miles or eight kilometers from the sea or an inlet.

• The highest point in the United States is Mt. McKinley in Denali National Park, Alaska. It is 20,320 feet (6,194 m) above sea level. Denali means “high one” in the language of the native Athabascan people in Alaska.

• The highest point in the lower 48 states is Mt. Whitney in California at 14,495 ft. (4418 m.). Mt. Whitney is less than 100 miles (161 km) from Death Valley, the lowest point in North America.

• Many “highpointers” travel to Florida to see Britton Hill. It is the lowest high point of any state in the U.S. at 345 ft. (105 m).

• What are “highpointers?” They are a club that promotes climbing the high point of all 50 U.S. states. The 2009 convention was held in High Point State Park, New Jersey. The highest point in the park is the state’s high point at 1,803 feet (550 m) above sea level. Within the park is Dryden Kuser Natural Area which is the highest elevation swamp of its kind in the world where Atlantic white cedars grow.

BREAK THE ICE (continued):

• When you think of Colorado, you probably think of mountains. The state has more land over 10,000 feet (3048 m) than any other state, including over 50 peaks above 14,000 feet (4267 m), called the “Fourteeners.”

• Dragila Way on the Idaho State University campus is a street named after Stacy Dragila. She won the first gold medal ever for women pole vaulters at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Her gold medal height was 15.1 feet (4.6 m). She later made a vault at 15.8 feet (4.83 m) in Ostrava, Czech Republic in 2004.

• The highest point along the North Carolina Railroad between Goldsboro and Charlotte, North Carolina was incorporated as High Point in 1859. The city, known as the “Furniture Capital of the World” is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2009. The Biannual High Point Market attracts buyers from all 50 states and over 100 countries.

• A public park that opened in New York City in June, 2009, has a “high point” theme. High Line Park is pretty unique - it’s 30 feet above street level. The High Line was an elevated freight railroad line. Originally the line was at street level and known for frequent accidents. In fact, in the late 1800s and early 1900s a group known as the “West Side Cowboys” rode horses and waved red flags warning of approaching trains. In 1934 the High Line opened to train traffic, eliminating 105 street level crossings. The trains traveled above the streets and were connected to warehouses and factories.

Better Money Habits Add Up to Savings

Don’t wait until the end of December to do a year-end financial review. This is a good time to begin developing new habits that will help you save money next year. Here are some ideas:Utility bills: If you had a goal this year of reducing your utility expenses by always turning off lights and lowering the thermostat, did you do it? If your savings weren’t what you expected because you didn’t always follow through, set a goal for next year. Notch the thermostat down a degree or two and turn off lights you’re not using until it becomes an easy habit.Cell phones: If you’re on a monthly plan that gives you a certain number of minutes for a set price, chances are you use up those minutes because they’re there. You can save money, however, by changing to an inexpensive phone with pre-paid minutes that you refill as needed. Your cell phone usage is likely to go down when you consider that each call is costing you a nickel or a dime per minute. The initial savings: no monthly bill. Additional savings: fewer minutes used.Grocery coupons: You have to do the work -- cut them out of the paper, plan meals around items that are covered by the coupons -- but there is serious money to be saved using grocery coupons. Investigate online coupon sites, too. (Generate a throwaway e-mail address for those sites requiring that you sign up.) Check with your local store before you present them with printed coupons. Some stores won’t take them. Pay attention to expiration dates. Rule of thumb: Don’t be tempted to buy food your family won’t eat just because it looks like a good deal.Sales flyers, ads and Internet comparison: Get in the habit of looking at the flyers and ads in the newspaper. Compare any intended purchases to what you find online. Plus, a local store with a Web site might list specials that never show up in a print ad.Think used: Check thrift shops for merchandise in good condition. You can find clothing, furniture, tools, books, children’s games, housewares and much more at very low prices. Take some steps now, and you’ll be positioned to start the New Year with better money-saving habits. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected]. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

BREAK THE ICE (continued):

• Some tracks for the High Line were demolished in the 1960s. The last train on the High Line in 1980 pulled three carloads of frozen turkeys. The new park has been in the works for years with property owners and “Friends of the High Line” pushing for preservation and reuse as a public space. It is now owned by the city.

• Mt. Hood is a dormant volcano and Oregon’s highest peak at 11,245 feet (3,427 m). It is the only ski area in North America opened every month of the year. Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, was built as a “Works Progress Administration” project funded by the U.S. government to put people to work during the “Great Depression.” It has been privately owned since 1955.

• To be at the “timberline” is to be at the point on a mountain above where trees grow, due to environmental conditions that preclude such growth.

• The tallest lighthouse in America is the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The tower height is 207 feet (63 m), although 10 feet (3 m) are underground.

• High Point Café in the Mt. Airy area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is a true neighborhood café where the owner hopes the coffee, food, and friendliness will be the high point” of your day! (Just like reading this Tidbits!)

TIDBITS ALL OVER THE WORLD:

ARGENTINAArgentina is the second largest country in South America, after Brazil, and eighth largest in the world. The Spanish claimed this country in 1516. Ancestry of 95% of the population is European.• The central street in Buenos Aires, the

capital city, is Avenida 9 de Julio, which is the date of independence from Spain, July 9, 1816. Often referred to as “the widest street in the world,” it has ten lanes in each direction, with three medians.

• Buenos Aires is called “Paris of South America” because of European flavor manifested by its people and architecture.

• Dog walking is a busy occupation in Buenos Aires. It is not unusual to see ten or more dogs with one walker. Generally, the dogs are well-behaved but there is no requirement for dog walkers to clean after their dogs. Instead city workers clean the sidewalks each night. Watch your step!

• The subway, called the “Subte” (short for subterraneo in Spanish and subterranean in English) in Buenos Aires was the first subway in both the southern hemisphere and Latin America. Opened in 1913, it is undergoing a major expansion.

• Valdes Peninsula is a World Heritage Site that is home to enormous seal, elephant seal, and sea lion colonies. Many orca whales are in the surrounding waters.

• South of Valdes Peninsula is a smaller peninsula, Punta Tombo, home to the largest colony of Magellanic penguins in the world…at least for part of the year. They are there from September until mid-March. This is the breeding ground for about 200,000 pairs – yes, about 400,000!

• The Argentine Pampas is approximately 295,000 square miles (760,000 sq. km). Pampas is a Quechua Indian word that means “flat surface.” The Pampas stretches from the Andes Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean with a downward slope from 1,640 feet (500 m) to 66 feet (20m) above sea level at Buenos Aires. The area is mostly grasslands with few trees. Huge estancias (ranches) are home to gauchos (South American cowboys) and huge cattle herds. The region is also known for crops (including grapes) and wineries.

• Argentina is in the southern hemisphere, so seasons are reversed from North America. Their winter is our summer.

• Beef consumption per person in Argentina is about 154 pounds (70 k) per year, as of 2007 - the highest consumption in the world. Churrascarias, restaurants that serve the flavorful beef, lamb and more are numerous.

• At the southern tip of Argentina, in a region separated by the Strait of Magellan, is Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city, located on an island of Tierra del Fuego

• The U.S. has the White House… in Argentina, it’s the Pink House! The Pink House is the presidential palace. It was painted its pink hue in the late 1800s for President Sarmiento who wanted to blend Federalist red and Unitarist white encouraging reconciliation of the country’s political parties.

• Does this make you thirsty for more? A very popular drink in Argentina is yerba mate. It is a tea-like drink made from leaves of the Ilex Paraguariensis tree.

SIT...AND ROCK A WHILELarge furniture for advertising, comfortable rocking chairs for relaxation, the need for comfort and the desire for style…we all enjoy our furniture. • The High Point, North Carolina Chamber of Commerce built a super

chest of drawers for publicity in the 1920s. The furniture piece was actually a 20-foot (6.1 m) building that was the Chamber’s information center. The building was renovated in 1996 and became a 38-foot (11.6 m) tall Goddard-Townsend chest, including two gigantic socks dangling from a drawer symbolizing the area’s hosiery industry.

• The largest furniture store in the world is also in High Point. Furnitureland South has more than 1,000,000 sq. ft. of showroom space. Furthermore, the store has the world’s largest highboy chest of drawers, an eye-catcher at 80 feet (24.4 m) tall.

• Although Benjamin Franklin is credited with inventing the rocking chair, this claim is unconfirmed and questioned by some furniture historians. Regardless, rocking chairs have been around since the late 1700s.

• Windsor Rocking chairs were named after their place of origin, Windsor Castle, in England. Bentwood Rockers were so-named because of their design – bent wood spindles. Boston Rockers were a type of Windsor made with a rolled seat around 1830.

• Other rocking chair designs have their fans as well. With all of these styles, the origin goes back to the peaceful, calming to-and-fro movement of rocking horses and baby cradles.

• Gangster Al Capone, had a business card claiming that he was an antique furniture dealer? It was a “front” that he used while carrying out criminal gang activity.

• W.C. Page and Arthur E. Presnell were friends during World War I who talked of building chairs after the war. They opened the P&P Chair Company in August, 1926 and worked together for 22 years. Although Page eventually purchased Presnell’s shares, the company name remained the same.

• In 1953 a routine purchase by Dr. Janet Travell from New York provided an unexpected boost to the P&P Chair Co. The doctor purchased what she called a “Carolina Rocker” for her office. The name caught on and was liked by P&P and subsequently trademarked and stamped on their rocking chairs.

• A young U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, John Kennedy, experienced back pain from a war injury. He visited Dr. Travell’s office and sat in her Carolina Rocker. The oak chair’s woven seat and back were very comfortable for Kennedy so the doctor suggested he purchase one. She believed the rocker kept the muscles of the lower back moving, contracting and relaxing, thereby relieving tension. And… as they say, the rest is history!

• When Kennedy became President of the United States in 1961, Dr. Travell became White House physician and the President’s rocking chair was moved from his Senate office to the Oval Office. He eventually acquired at least fourteen of the Carolina Rockers…and they became known as “Kennedy Rockers.” His original rocker from the Oval Office is on display at the JFK Library & Museum in Boston.

• P&P Chair Company was purchased by Troutman Chair Company in December, 2008. They continue to build “Kennedy Rockers.”
