COLD, HARD TRUTH (continued):

• People over age 60 and children less than a year old are most susceptible tothe cold. For those of you in that category, experts suggest keeping indoortemperatures above 69 F (21 C) and when going outside, dress appropri-atelyfor the cold. Have plenty of layers of clothes and a hat on the head.

• How cold was it? For those of us who like to think that GeorgeWashington walked on water, this confirms it: the winter of 1779-1780was so cold that ice was piled 20 feet high along the Delmarva Coast andstayed there until spring. The upper portion of the Chesapeake Bay andthe entire Potomac River was frozen solid. People were able to walk fromAnnapolis to Kent Island and from Alexandria into Washington D.C.

• Contrary to popular belief, a polar bear’s fur is not white; each shaft ofhair is actually transparent, with a hollow core. Because the hollow corescatters and reflects light, the polar bear’s coat appears white, like the iceand snow around it.

• In the late 1970s, three polar bears at the San Diego Zoo appeared to turngreen when colonies of algae grew in their hair shafts. A veterinarianrestored their white appearance by killing the algae with a saline solution.

• On Jan. 6, 2002 snow fell in Athens for the first time since 1992. SomeAegean islands were also affected by snow and gale force winds.

• Desert areas in the north of Saudi Arabia were affected by snow for thefirst time in 40 years on Jan. 18, 2002. The snow melted away quicklybut reports say that nomads in the area weren’t used to snow and wererather confused as to what to do with it.

• Snowbirds must have had a sense of dŽjˆ vu when snow fell in Miami,Palm Beach, Mi-ami Beach and Homestead (22 miles south of Miami)on Jan. 17, 1997. It was the first and thus far the only time snow has beenob-served south of Fort Myers. The snow melted on contact with theground but nevertheless it did snow.

• A hailstone weighing more than one-and-a-half pounds once fell onCoffeyville, Kansas. No one was hit.

• Based on records between 1961 and 1990, Rochester, New Yorkreceives an average of 94 inches of snow a year and is the snowiestlarge city in the United States.

• Baby it’s cold outside: Here’s an oddity: - 40 F is the same regardlessof whether you measure in Fahrenheit or Celsius.

• Mercury freezes at -36 F (-38 C). So if it gets really cold outside, thatold fashioned mer-cury thermometer you keep outside will itselffreeze at minus 38 degrees.

• Looks can be deceiving. Just because the sun is out on a winter daydoesn’t mean it is nec-essarily warm. The coldest days are usually theclear ones – no clouds to hold in what little heat may be radiatingaway from the earth.

• A wind chill factor of -25 F (-32 C) or lower can actually cause skinto freeze; that’s called frostbite. If it is that cold out, either cover allyour exposed skin. Or get inside. We heartily recommend the latter.

• In southern Illinois and the Ozark hills of Missouri, ÒgooseboneÓweather prophets ex-amine the breastbone of a wild goose killed inautumn. If it is thin, that predicts a mild winter; it thick and opaque,a hard winter; if white, much snow; if reddish or red-spotted, cold butlittle snow.

• Muskrat love: some people believe that muskrats build bigger lodgesand the fur is thicker on muskrats, raccoons, skunks and otherfurbearers before a severe winter.

Clock Is Ticking for HomebuyersThe $8,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers hasbeen extended, but only until the end of April. Totake advantage of the credit, you must have a houseunder contract by that time and close within 60days. Additionally, another category of homebuyerhas been added: Those who have owned (and livedin) their current homes for at least five years mayqualify for a $6,500 credit if they buy another home.

If you're ready to buy now, step one is to getyourself pre-approved. Don't mistake "pre-qualified" for "pre-approved," because they're notthe same thing. Pre-qualifications are preliminary, informal "running the numbers," and often can bedone by phone. The lender at the other end will askabout your income and expenses and determine ifyou have the right debt-to-income ratio, and mightdo a fast credit check to see what your FICO scoreis.

Pre-approval involves all of the above, with manyextra steps, mostly involving showing paperwork tothe lender. It'll need to verify all your information. At the end of that process, if you're qualified, you'llbe told that you're pre-approved. This is the pointwhere you ask for that pre-approval in writing. You'll know your price range and won't waste timeon homes you can't afford. That pre-approval alsowill help you when you submit an offer: The sellerwill know you're serious. Additionally, you'll likely

be able to close faster as much of the paperworkwill have been completed.

Some caveats about buying a home in the winter: Ifthere's snow on the ground and the roof, it can hidea number of problems. Solution: Check Googlemaps satellite photos of the house. Those photos aregenerally taken in the fall when there's no snow onthe ground and fewer leaves on the trees to blockvisibility. Google maps also will show you a streetview in many locations. If the house doesn't lookthe same as it does now, or if you see a blue tarp onthe roof, ask questions. You also can check theyards of your potential neighbors and businessesaround you. Unless you know the area very well, you could discover creeks, dumps and junkyardsyou didn't know were there.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personallyanswer reader questions, but will incorporate theminto his column whenever possible. Write to him incare of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail [email protected].

Fibromyalgia, a Baffling Illness

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 50-year-old daughterhas been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. She is in agreat deal of pain, and medications have providedno relief. She has been told there is no cure. Exactlywhat is fibromyalgia? What causes it? -- E.F.

ANSWER: Fibromyalgia is a baffling illness whosetwo principal symptoms are pain and fatigue. Thepain is body-wide, on both sides and above andbelow the waist. For diagnosis, the pain has to havebeen present for three or more months. The fatigueof this condition is overwhelming, so much so thatthe simplest of daily tasks becomes a formidablechallenge. Patients also suffer from sleep that doesnot refresh, and they often find it difficult toconcentrate.

Its cause remains a great unknown.

Specific tests for fibromyalgia don't exist. However, tender points -- areas on the body where

finger pressure elicits pain out of proportion to thepressure applied -- aid in making a diagnosis. Thereare 18 such points, and for a diagnosis, 11 shouldbe present.

Other illnesses -- such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Sjogren's syndrome and hepatitis, whichhave similar symptoms -- have to be excluded, sotesting for those conditions becomes part of thefibromyalgia workup.

Your daughter is right. No cure has been found, butsometimes symptoms improve on their own.Exercise is important. It sounds ridiculous to ask aperson who is hurting and exhausted to exercise. Atthe start, exercise intensity can be modest, justwalking. The goal is to extend exercise to 20 or 30minutes of daily exercise and to pick up the tempogradually.

The Food and Drug Administration has approvedthree medicines to ease fibromyalgia symptoms. They are Lyrica, Cymbalta and the newest, Savella.

The booklet on fibromyalgia provides moreinformation on this baffling illness and itstreatments. Readers can obtain a copy by writing:Dr. Donohue -- No. 305W, Box 536475, Orlando,FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order(no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with therecipient's printed name and address. Please allowfour weeks for delivery.

***

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My friend's toenails arewhite. What cause that? -- E.B.

ANSWER: Fungal infections of the nail often turnthem white. Proof of fungal infections comes froma doctor examining scrapings of the nails with amicroscope.

Many medicines are on the market for treatment ofsuch an infection. Some can be painted on the nail-- Penlac is an example. The success rate is notbreathtaking. Oral prescription medicines are alsoavailable. They are expensive, and they don'talways work. Lots of people prefer to live in peacewith such nail infections by ignoring them.

***

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My stomach sags aroundthe belly button. My doctor says it's an umbilicalhernia. There's no discomfort or pain. Will 100 sit-ups a day fix this? -- L.W.

ANSWER: A thousand sit-ups a day will not fix it.Sit-ups could make it worse. Only surgery can fixit. Any exercise that increases pressure within theabdomen can make the hernia protrude more. If thisbothers you, get a surgeon's opinion.

***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answerindividual letters, but he will incorporate them in hiscolumn whenever possible. Readers may write him orrequest an order form of available health newsletters atP.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING

As we lightened up this Big Appleclassic, we decided on a new motto: Ifwe can fake cheesecake here, we canfake it anywhere. And we did, cuttingnearly 200 calories, 21 grams of fat and141 milligrams of cholesterol, simplyby using low-fat and fat-free dairyproducts and streamlining the crust.

3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs

2 tablespoons trans-fat-free vegetableoil spread, melted

3 packages (8-ounce) reduced-fat creamcheese

1 cup sugar

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 1/2 pints fat-free sour cream

1 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 large eggs

2 large egg whites

1. Preheat oven to 325 F. In 9-inchspringform pan, stir crumbs with spreaduntil moistened. With hand, firmly press

mixture onto bottom of pan. Bake crust15 minutes or until deep golden. Cool 5minutes on wire rack.

2. Meanwhile, in large bowl, with mixeron medium speed, beat cream cheeseuntil smooth. Combine sugar andcornstarch. Slowly beat sugar mixtureinto cream cheese. On low speed, beatin sour cream and vanilla. Add eggs andegg whites, 1 at a time, until blended.

3. Pour batter over crust in pan. Bakecheesecake 1 hour. Edge will be set, butcenter will still jiggle. Turn oven off; letcheesecake remain in oven 1 hour.Transfer to wire rack. Run thin knifearound edge of cheesecake to preventcracking during cooling. Cool in pan, about 2 hours. Cover and refrigerate 4hours or overnight. Remove side of panto serve. Serves 16.

COLD, HARD TRUTH (continued):• The woolly bear caterpillar is supposed to forecast a mild winter if its

middle band of reddish brown is wider than the two end bands of black, and a hard winter if it is nar-rower.

• Most people think it can be too cold to snow. But they’d be wrong. Itcan snow even at very cold temperatures if there’s a source of moistureand some way to lift or cool the air.

• If the temperature drops to the single digits or to below zero F, thecapacity for water va-por to form becomes very small, making heavysnowfall unlikely.

• This year is the twentieth anniversary of Sweden’s ICE HOTEL inJukkasjŠrvi. What began as an Igloo of 60 square meters is now theworld’s largest hotel made completely of ice and snow.

• For six days in January 1998, freezing rain coated Ontario, Quebec andNew Brunswick with 3-4 inches of ice. Trees and electric wires fell and

utility poles and transmission towers came down causing massivepower outages, some for as long as a month. It was the most expensivenatural disaster in Can-ada. According to Environment Canada, the icestorm of 1998 directly affected more people than any other previousweather event in Canadian history.

"Wish: A Novel"

By Alexandra Bullen

(Scholastic Books, $17.99)

Reviewed by Katherine B. Olson

After the death of her twin sister,high-school junior Olivia Larsenand her family move from theirhome on the quiet East Coast tolively San Francisco, where Oliviaconfronts life in a new house, aschool filled with strangers and abustling city without her other half, twin Violet. Yet after a magicaldress is unexpectedly delivered toher doorway, Olivia finds herselftaking advice, solace and --astonishingly -- three wishes fromwhat just might be the ghost of herbeloved sister.

With the writing chops oftenmissing from authors ofcontemporary young-adult fiction,Alexandra Bullen deftly anddescriptively invokes theuncertainty of death and the

precariousness of daily life as ahigh-schooler. She does not takefor granted the intelligence orexperience of her readers, referencing both Virginia Woolfessays and iPods with equal ease.

Bullen characterizes Olivia'sfoibles and relationships, letting asomewhat-illogical plot unfoldgracefully and compellingly.Though the author's heroine,Olivia, stumbles, she must find herway out from the lingering blackcloud of her twin sister's absence --and the shadowy expectationsViolet left behind -- not on herown, but with loving andmysterious guidance provided bythe least likely source, Violet.

Arriving in a sparkly purple giftbag, complete with glitter, birthdaycandles and a lucky penny, "Wish"is the perfect gift for any wishfulteenage reader. On a bookstoreshelf now often cluttered withbrooding blood-sucking vampiresand the tween protagonists whoobsess over them, Bullen's debutnovel stands out as a great read, fitting for a hopeful youngaudience anywhere.
