Neatest TIDBITS® LOOKS AT COLUMBUS & OTHER SAILORS by Patricia L. Cook Global Positioning System devices (GPS) and other modern technology were not available when Columbus and other early sailors made fantastic discoveries around the globe. Come ex- plore with us! • The GPS that are so prevalent (and fun!) today were not even a dream for Christopher Columbus or Ferdinand Magellan and other explorers. • They used hand drawn maps, and good old- fashioned trial and error to navigate the world. In 1492 when Columbus was preparing his journey to find a new route to Asia for trade, he thought the circumference of the earth was 15,693 miles (25,255 km) when in actuality it was 24,855 miles (40,000 km). Quite a difference! • Furthermore Columbus thought the distance from Spain to Japan was only 2400 miles (3862 km)… it was over 10,000 miles (16093 km). There were also some unknown landmasses of significant size blocking the way, North and South America with a little Central in between! • Would you board a ship on an adventure of such magnitude without knowing a little more? In our world of too much information (TMI!) it’s a little hard to fathom. turn the page for more! Q: Where did Columbus first land in America? A: On his feet! TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

A Tribute To Sportsmen And WomenBy Tresa Erickson

Conservation efforts have increased dramati-cally since the presidency of Theodore Roos-evelt. An avid sportsman, Roosevelt worked hard to protect the natural resources he so loved. Assisting him in the effort were thou-sands of fellow sportsmen and women. To-gether, they pushed for laws protecting public lands, waters and wildlife, requiring fishing and hunting licenses, and funding state con-servation agencies through taxation of gear. As a result, hundreds of thousands of species were saved from extinction, including ante-lope, elk, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and wood ducks. While Roosevelt was recognized for his efforts, most sportsmen and women

were not. They deserved public recognition, too.

Acutely aware of the problem, Pennsylvania gun shop owner Ira Joffe suggested the cre-ation of a day to thank sportsmen and women for their conservation efforts. Governor Ray-mond Shafer supported the idea and estab-lished Outdoor Sportsman’s Day in the state in 1970.

The idea for a national day gained momen-tum with support from the National Shooting Sports Foundation, and just a year later, Con-gress got into the act. Senator Thomas Mc-Intyre from New Hampshire and Representa-tive Bob Sikes from Florida each presented a bill calling for the establishment of National Hunting and Fishing Day on the fourth Satur-day of September. The bills were well received and passed in both houses. President Richard Nixon signed the first proclamation of the day on May 2, 1972.

From there, the celebration of National Hunt-ing and Fishing Day took off. Every state gov-ernor and many city mayors jumped onboard, working diligently to promote the day. Na-tional, regional, state and local organizations

responded with hundreds of hunting and fishing events.

The celebration of National Hunting and Fish-ing Day continues to this day. Each year, prom-inent figures from politicians to athletes to entertainers serve as chair of the day. Count-less events are held everywhere in honor of the conservation efforts of sportsmen and women. These serve to raise awareness of the cause and give others a chance to see how fun hunting and fishing can be.

Recovering From Bankruptcy

While a bankruptcy will stay on your credit report for 10 years, it doesn’t mean you’re out of luck for that whole time when it comes to getting new credit. You’ll likely get stacks of offers in the mail for secured credit cards as soon as your bankruptcy notice hits the legal ads. Secured cards can be a good first step, but not all cards are the same. With a secured card, you send the company money to keep on deposit, and it essentially loans you back your own funds (typically in the hundreds of dollars) in the form of a credit card. It’s the fees you need to watch for. There will be application fees, annual fees, upfront fees, participation fees -- and before you know it, the few hundred dollars you put on deposit are gone.Beware offers of unsecured cards for the same reason. The interest rate is likely to be very high. Additionally, if the card company doesn’t report your payments to the credit bureaus, it doesn’t do you any good. You need to build a track record of on-time payments.Take a close look at your credit report from all three bureaus. It’s possible that there are debts still listed (negative ones that show an overdue balance) that were canceled during bankruptcy. If there was a public notice in the legal ads, the credit bureaus will have seen it and should note it in your records. If they haven’t, insist that it be corrected. When it comes to buying a house or car after bankruptcy, there is always someone who will give you a loan. The problem is the astronomical interest rate you’ll surely be offered. Wait it out. At some point (a year or two) you could qualify for a loan at closer to current interest rates. Use that time to build your credit and save money for a down payment. If there are debts that were reaffirmed during bankruptcy (not discharged), use those as an example of how you’ll pay your debts in the future. Make all payments on time.If you’ve been through bankruptcy, you essentially have a clean slate and can start new -- but only if you don’t make any mistakes.

READ

EVERY WEEK!

By Samantha Weaver

• It was Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge who made the following sage observation: “The man’s desire is for the woman, but the woman’s desire is rarely other than for the desire of the man.” • The lens of your eye will continue to grow throughout your lifetime. • You might be surprised to learn that famed British author Aldous Huxley, best-known for his dystopian novel “Brave New World,” was a consultant on Disney’s 1951 animated film version of “Alice in Wonderland.” • Andrew Johnson, the 17th president of the United States, didn’t learn to read until he was 17 years old. • For reasons that are unclear in the present day, lawmakers in North Carolina once saw fit to forbid racing a rabbit down a public street. • In 1850, the northern portion of the state of California declared itself to be an independent country to

be known as the Great Republic of Rough and Ready. • Before he became a famous actor and director in

his own right, Clint Eastwood was fired from bit parts in several films. • Everyone knows that ballerinas endure rigorous training that can wreak havoc on their feet, but you may not have known that their shoes endure their own hardships. It’s not uncommon for dancers to break in their toe shoes by crushing them in doors, steaming them over a kettle, slamming them against a concrete floor or beating them with a hammer. • Those who study such things claim that eventually the oceans will dry up -- in about a billion years or so. • During the Middle Ages, French toast was a delicacy enjoyed only by the very wealthy.***Thought for the Day: “There’s no secret about success. Did you ever know a successful man who didn’t tell you about it?” -- Kin Hubbard
