Tidbits brings you a few lesser-known details about these famous folks. • Austria-born celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck learned to cook from his mother, a part-time pastry chef. After immigrating to America at age 25, he worked two years in Indianapolis before becoming a chef in Los Angeles. His first cookbook was published when he was 33. Puck’s first Spago restaurant opened on the Sunset Strip the following year. He now has 19 restaurants. The Beverly Hills Spago has been on the list of the Top 40 restaurants in the United States since 2004. Puck cites macaroons as his absolute favorite food. Had he not chosen his current profession, he says he would have liked to have been an artist. • Although Ginger Rogers is most famous for her movie roles as Fred Astaire’s dancing partner, she only appeared with him in 10 out of her 73 films. Born Virginia McMath, it was her ambition to become a schoolteacher, but at 19, she became a Hollywood star almost overnight. At age 60, she still had her high heels on, dancing the Charleston on an episode of close friend Lucille Ball’s sitcom. turn the page for more!

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re not Sheepish when it comes to assert-ing your opinions on what you think is right or wrong. Be assured that you’re being heard, and something positive will follow.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your sense of justice makes it difficult not to speak up about a recurring matter involving a co-worker. But, once again, you need facts to back you up before you can act.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Romance is still dominant, and if Cupid misfired before, don’t worry. He’ll take better aim at some-one new this time around. Expect favorable news about a financial matter.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The zodiac’s Moon Children can expect things to work out pretty much as planned. One negative note involves a minor relationship problem that suddenly turns serious.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re suddenly being asked to make choices between two practically equal offers. Which one to choose? Easy. The one most likely to gladden your Lion’s heart.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Once again, you’re confronted by a workplace problem you thought you’d already resolved. This time, you might need to go higher up to find a just resolution.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good for you: You’re determined to stick with your goals and ignore those naysayers who might try to discourage you. You’re on the right track. The challenge now is to stay on it.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You’ll soon get news that is supposed to help you with a troublesome situation. Use your sharp Scorpion instincts to determine if the information is reliable.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) If you learn someone has betrayed your trust, don’t just accept it and walk away. You need to know why that person decided to do what he or she did.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A painful family relationship problem could finally begin to heal. Be prepared to show more flexibil-ity than you might like. But it could be worth it.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It’s a good idea to enhance your career skills so you’ll be prepared to accept a more responsible position when it’s offered. A friend returns a favor just when you need it.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Show that strong, steely backbone that you usually hide, and demand to be included in any family decision-making that could affect the well-being of a loved one.

BORN THIS WEEK: You can be happy being alone at home. But you also love exploring the world outside and meeting new people and sharing new ideas.

Ten years ago I never would have guessed that I would own a large tutoring referral agency and franchise system with over 600 teachers and over 500 active clients per month. I love what I do. Academic Ad-vantage Tutoring helps students succeed and build confidence. We help to educate our future doctors, scientists, engineers, politicians etc.......

How did this happen? After I adopted a baby I became preg-nant right away and gave birth at the time I was supposed to return to work. I was not eligible for maternity leave with the 2ndchild. A friend had just finished the SEP program and raved about it. Could I start my own business?? It seemed im-possible. I was a teacher, not a business person. I had no clue how to run a busi-ness, let alone start one. I attended the SEP program and found that I fit their cri-teria.

I joined the SEP program in 2002. It’s truly the greatest choice that I ever made. It changed my life. The program gave me all of the tools I needed to create a success-ful business. In the SEP classes I created a vision statement which projected where my business would be in 5 years. Then I created a business plan which was like a manual on how to make my vision come true. The instructors taught all aspects of business and shared real life experienc-es. I shared ideas with 24 other entrepre-neurs who were my classmates. For the rest of the year I received support from my SEP advisor.

The SEP program is fantastic! I’d highly recommend it to anyone wanting to be-come self employed.

MOVIES OF THE WEEK“Limitless” (PG-13) -- What if there was a mysterious drug that could unlock the full po-tential of your mind? Everybody knows that the right answer is to just say “no,” but that never occurred to anybody working on “Lim-itless,” a non habit-forming, underwhelming experience of a movie.Bradley Cooper stars as Eddie, a struggling writer who comes across a clear pill that op-timizes his personality, turning every gleaned fact and forgotten lecture into pure intellect and drive. With his unlimited potential, Eddie can improve his life in every way and demon-strate incredible powers of deduction, yet he still manages to make bad decisions with pre-dictable consequences. The story is adapted from a novel, and suf-fers the usual symptoms of a poorly adapted script -- excessive narration, loose ends, under-utilized characters and more narration. The

voice-over work and smash cuts manage to keep things moving and make “Limitless” a certified thriller.

“Take Me Home Tonight” (R) -- Mov-ies banking on nostalgia should also bring something new to the table, right? Other-wise, why not just watch a movie that was actually made in the beloved time period of your choosing? This is the existential crisis at the core of “Take Me Home Tonight,” a movie dead-set on reminding audiences that the 1980s happened.Topher Grace (“That ‘70s Show,” “Spider-man 3”) plays Matt, a 23-year-old MIT grad whose lack of direction has him working at a video store and living with his parents. Sounds like somebody is in need of a wild night of partying, chasing girls and self-dis-covery. There is some real charm and even a few good laughs, thanks to a supporting cast that includes the dopey hilarity of Chris Pratt from TV’s “Parks and Recreation.”This might have been a funnier, more origi-nal and more noticeable movie if it shed the ‘80s fixation. As it is, “Take Me Home To-

night” doesn’t compare to the enduring charm of its John Hughes inspiration, but that’s a tall order.

“Amelie” (R) [Blu-ray] -- This 2001 French film follows the titular fanciful femme as she finds beauty in the modern world. Audrey Tautou, who you might recognize as the pretty face dominating the “Foreign Language” shelf at the video store, plays Amelie, an eccentric young woman who finds a stranger’s memen-tos in her Paris apartment and decides to re-turn them to their owner. The heart of story is about interpersonal connection and finding love, but it’s all wrapped in pretty packaging and solid art direction, which makes a Blu-ray release seem worthwhile.

Planning a summer party on a budget? Fill an easy-to-freeze ice decanter with fresh lemon-ade for your next neighborhood party and get ready for the ooh’s and ah’s when friends see the icy wonder. It’s a frozen party asset that won’t break the bank. Easy, fun, magical and guaranteed to be cold! Here’s how to create an ice decanter:

You’ll need:--1 clean, empty half-gallon standard card-board milk, orange juice or lemonade carton with top opened wide. --1 empty and clean liter-size glass sparkling water or wine bottle with top labels removed--Fresh fruits such as a lemon, orange, lime and strawberries.--Fresh dill or mint--Masking tape--Funnel

Ice Decanter Makes Summer Party Magical

Here’s the fun:1. Cut off the top portion of the juice carton if you wish, or keep it in place with the top portion left opened wide. (If you don’t cut it, you could fill it near the top with water so that ice reaches to the bottle’s neck.) Set the bottle in the center of the carton, and fill it a quarter full with water. 2. Let kids tuck sprigs of dill or mint and sev-eral thick lemon, orange or lime slices in the water around the bottle. Set tape over the top of the bottle and attach to outer sides of the carton to keep bottle in place in the center of carton. Freeze. 3. Remove the carton from the freezer, fill with more water, fruit slices and herbs until the water reaches close to the top of the car-ton. Re-freeze.4. To use, tear off the carton with your kids to reveal the surprise creation. You may need to run warm water around the carton, or an adult may cut the length of the carton with a knife to release it easily.5. Set a funnel on the mouth of the bottle and fill it with lemonade or your preferred bever-age. Place the filled ice decanter on a rimmed plate lined with a thin towel. Wrap and tie a cloth napkin around the lower portion of the ice block for easy handling.

Extra idea: Make a floral ice sculpture. Fill the carton with water and add short-stemmed flowers such as roses and freeze. The flowers will be suspended in the ice encasing the bottle. ***Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public televi-sion nationwide. Sanjana Khaira of Sanjana Khaira Law Corpora-tion “I always wanted to be my own boss”. I heard this statement a lot from my contemporaries in the Douglas College Self-Employment Program. For me however, becoming my own boss was never really about me. Like most lawyers, I ac-cepted the harsh realities of the life I chose – the 12-hour days that only amounted to 5 billable hours, the healthy balanced diet of coffee and chocolate bars, the office managers who were tracking devices for junior associates and of course, the trials that took up every waking and sleeping moment. As time went on, I real-ized that I did not have the authority to serve my clientele in the way that was most beneficial and cost-effective for them. All too often I had to either turn clients away because they could not afford the fees or terms set by the firm. I could accept having a less than enviable life be-ing an associate lawyer, but it was a harder pill to swallow when I saw my clients getting the shorter end of the stick. I am first and foremost a human being who wants to improve the lives of those around me. Becoming a lawyer was supposed to help me achieve my desire to help members of our community. It was while I had these thoughts swirling in my head that I met a woman who works at Douglas College in the Self-Employment Program at another lawyer’s birthday party. We became fast friends and she suggested that I become my own boss. I applied to the program she worked for and the rest is history. Now I get to be the type of lawyer my clients can truly appreciate. I make the big deci-sions when it comes to how I service my clients. I can spend all the time that I need to with a client without answering to a big boss about billable hours. Now, I only answer to my clients and that is truly what “becoming your own boss” means.

WhiteIntense Opens in Langley, Focuses on Quality

WhiteIntense, a cosmetic teeth whitening boutique service, has opened a location in Langley and is placing an emphasis on offering quality products.

WhiteIntense, a cosmetic teeth whitening provider, has opened a location in Langley. The company focuses on providing quality teeth whitening products to help people achieve a brighter, more confident smile. The 30-minute WhiteIntense service provides a guaran-teed minimum teeth whitening of two to eight shades whiter. WhiteIntense focuses on pro-viding high-quality, effective teeth whitening solutions that do not cause the risk of severe gum and teeth sensitivity. “Many teeth-whitening options are available today,” explains Sebastian Kocik, President of WhiteIntense. “But with some of them you may run a risk of having serious discomfort after you use them. We specializing in providing high-quality products that will give you the shade you want, and will not irritate your mouth in the process.” Many dental offices that offer teeth whitening use a whitening gel concentration of up to 40 percent. WhiteIntense can help people achieve optimal results by using a concentra-tion of 16 percent. While both will help get a person’s teeth their whitest, the lower con-centration of whitening gel will accomplish it without causing serious irritation or creating a tooth sensitivity issue. WhiteIntense is part of a trend of area businesses that are specializing in providing one specialized service. Companies that do that are better able to provide a quality, high-im-pact service that will keep customers coming back. WhiteIntense offers in-house services at their Langley location. Their high-quality, effective products are also available for at-home use, and can be purchased online or at the salon.“We are establishing ourselves as the go-to place for getting your teeth whiter,” adds Kocik. “After as little as a 15-minute session, your teeth can look shades whiter. It’s so simple that there is no reason to not do it!” About WhiteIntense:WhiteIntense, located in Langley, specializes in providing professional cosmetic teeth whitening services. They also offer an executive mobile option. Cosmetic teeth whitening options are available in 15-minute sessions. Corporate and student discounts are avail-able.
