TIDBITS® RESEARCHES CAREERS CUT SHORT by Kathy Wolfe The music industry has suffered many sad losses over the years. This week, Tidbits brings a sampling of those talented legends whose premature deaths resulted in prom- ising careers cut short. • • Baby boomers will recall Ricky Nelson as one of the biggest teen idols of the 1950s and 1960s. Starting out on his family’s television show “Ozzie & Har- riet,” Nelson began his recording career in 1961 with the million-selling “Travelin’ Man,” followed by another chart topper “Hello, Mary Lou.” He was still record- ing in the 1980s with his Stone Canyon Band when he composed the hit “Garden Party.” As Nelson, his fiancée and band members were jetting to a New Year’s Eve 1985 performance, a fire caused by a malfunctioning heater broke out in their DC-3, and the plane crashed, killing the 45-year-old singer and several others. • • Soul singer Otis Redding recorded just one million-seller and No. 1 hit. Just three days after recording “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” in 1967, the 26-year-old Redding and his band boarded a plane in Wiscon- sin, encountered a storm, and crashed into Lake Monona. Four months later, the song hit the top spot on the charts. • • One crash took the lives of three ris- ing stars in 1959. Considered a pioneer of rock and roll, 22-year-old Buddy Holly, only a year and a half into his career, had already scored hits “That’ll Be the Day” and “Peggy Sue.” He was on the “Winter Dance Party” tour in February of 1959 with 17-year-old newcomer Ritchie Va- lens, a teen idol who had just released “La Bamba,” and 29-year-old “Big Bop- per” Richardson. The Bopper had recently scored a big hit with “Chantilly Lace.” The winter weather was bitter cold as the tour got underway, with the situation aggra- vated by a malfunction of the heater on Issue #488 Of South Denver Metro ...continued on page 2 December 27, 2011 - January 4, 2012 Published by Knight Media, LLC FOR ADVERTISING CALL (303) 797-7572 [email protected] Coupon Coupon Valid only at: Denny’s 275 West Hampden Ave. Englewood Buy Any Entree & 2 Drinks 2nd Entree Free and get of Equal or Lesser Value To learn more call 303.399.4067 or e-mail info @horizonscrc.com Do you have one of these conditions? • Acne • Rosacea • Psoriasis • Osteoarthritis • Hypertension • Uterine Fibroids • Gout • Menopause Symptoms • Type 2 Diabetes • Constipation Horizons Clinical Research Center, LLC is conducting clinical research studies of investigational treatments for these conditions. A man went to prison for the first time. He was in a cell with another man, and just as the lights were turned out in the evening he heard somebody from another cell shout out “Thirty-one!” All of a sudden everybody in the cell block burst out with laughter. Then another voice shouted “Fifty-six!” Again everybody burst out with laughter. The man was puzzled as to what was going on, so he turned to his cell mate and asked: “Why is it, when somebody shouts out a number, everybody bursts out with laughter?” His cell mate replied: “Well, you see, down in the prison library we have a joke book that contains every joke ever told. And we’ve all been in here so long we’ve all memorized all the jokes. So now, when anybody wants to tell a joke, they just have to shout out the page number from the book.” The man thought about this and decided that he would have a look at this book. So the next day he went down to the prison library and read a few pages. He wrote down the numbers on a bit of paper because they were so good he wanted to tell them to the others later. That night, after lights out he shouted out “Seventy-six!” He waited for laughter but there wasn’t any. He tried another one. “Twenty!” Again silence. He couldn’t understand why nobody was laughing. He asked his cell mate, “Why is nobody laughing?” His cell mate replied “It must be the way you tell them.”

How Do You Pay Off Debt? When you’re saddled with multiple debt pay-ments every month and want to put extra money toward paying off one at a time, how do you decide which debt gets the extra money first? There are two schools of thought: Some finan-cial gurus advise paying off the smallest debt first, and then using that extra money to attack the next smallest. Others believe in going for the one with the highest interest rate first, no matter how large or small the debt. But when it comes down to it, it’s the consumer, not the financial wizards, who ultimately write the checks. And it’s consumer who, for the most part, will pay the smallest debt first, no matter the interest rate. Now a University of Michigan study (Winning the Battle but Losing the War: The Psychology of Debt Management) has uncovered the rea-sons for consumer debt repayment decisions. Researchers concluded that consumers will pay off a small debt first, even if a larger debt has a higher interest rate, for the emotional and psychological satisfaction of retiring a debt -- a “quick win,” as they dubbed it. Correct or not, consumers are concerned with reducing the number of debts more than they are with the dollar value of the debts. It was only when consumers were shown the amount of interest they were paying that some saw the sense in changing their repayment methods.Credit-card companies are now required to show in a box on each month’s statement just how long it will take you to pay off the debt if you make only minimum payments, as well as a sample comparison to how much you’d have to pay each month to retire the debt more quickly. You can make use of an online calculator to show 1) how quickly a debt will be paid off if you make payments of varying amounts, and 2) how much interest you’ll be paying during that time. Search online for “credit card payment calculator,” then do the math for each of your debts to see which plan gets you debt-free the fastest.

The bottom line: No matter which method you use to pay off debts, be sure it makes financial sense. Always make more than the minimum payment to protect your credit scores.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) With the new year’s opportunities almost within reach, the Arian’s courageous aspects are raring to go. And don’t be surprised if a lot of people follow the zodiac’s most trusted leader.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Change lies ahead for the brave Bovine who is ready to shuck off the tried and true to try something new. But appearances can be deceptive. Check it all out before you charge into anything.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This week promises a peek into what the new year holds for the Gemini Twins, both in love and careers. Family matters continue to be a factor in decisions you’re going to be facing.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) As you move into the new year, your travel as-pects grow stronger, and you might find yourself making decisions about a desti-nation and a traveling companion sooner than you’d expected.LEO (July 23 to August 22) The new year holds both glitter and gold. This means Leos and Leonas should begin getting the facts they’ll need to separate the real thing from the sham in order to make important decisions next year.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A good way to start the new year might be to arrange for a visit to someone you haven’t seen in a long time. You also might want to pick up that project you put off a while back. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) As you contemplate the new year’s potential, you might want to talk things over with people who are or have been where you want to go. Their experience and advice can be helpful.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Someone close to you might feel you have no more room for him or her in your life. This calls for immediate reassurance of your love so you can start the new year on a high note.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to Decem-ber 21) The coming year will bring more people into your life. Some situations might not work out as well as others. But overall, everyone earns something, and that’s always a good thing.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The new year could find you indulg-ing in one or more of the hobbies you’ve always wanted to take up. And don’t be surprised if they ultimately direct you toward a new career. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) The artistic Aquarian should find more opportunities in the new year. You might even make some potentially helpful con-tacts as you gather to ring in the year 2012.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The new year offers challenges for Pisceans who want to make better use of the skills they now have and learn new ones. Per-sonal relationships show stronger positive aspects.BORN THIS WEEK: Although you sometimes tend to be a bit judgmental, nevertheless, you are generous and caring and very much beloved.

Week of December 26thWine -- Good or Bad

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am thoroughly confused. Several months ago, I read of the benefit of wine for women. The conclusion was that it reduced a woman’s chances of heart attack and stroke by 30 percent. My husband and I have started to drink one glass of wine a day. Now comes a new report that says just one glass of wine a day increases the chances for breast cancer. Should I be concerned? -- M.T.

ANSWER: Welcome to the army of nutrition confusion. What’s good one day might be life-threatening the next. I don’t rely on one report. I stick to what the majority says. If the majority changes its mind, then I change. Wine and other alcoholic drinks lower the inci-dence of heart disease and, apparently, strokes. That’s the current majority thinking. Mod-erate drinkers of alcohol -- wine in particular -- have a lower overall mortality rate than do alcohol abstainers and heavy drinkers. “Moderate” drinking is one glass of wine, one 12-ounce can of beer or 1.5 ounces of whiskey for women; it’s two for men. The role of wine (or alcohol) in promoting breast cancer is less clear. Analysis of 40 studies shows an increase in breast cancer for women downing three or more drinks a day. The same studies suggest that even one or two daily drinks might pose a slight danger. Other studies show an increase in lobular breast cancer with one drink a day, but no increase in ductal breast cancer. Ductal cancer is the most common kind of breast cancer.I am positive that equally confusing information will be forthcoming. The best advice I have read is this: If a woman truly savors drinking wine, one glass a day is relatively safe in regard to breast cancer. The benefits of heart health and prevention of stroke are not so great that they should induce anyone to change from being a nondrinker to a drinker. The booklet on breast cancer explains this illness in detail. To obtain a copy, write to: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1101W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. A boater brings his boat up to a restaurant dock to eat dinner. The dockhand says, “I’m sorry, sir, but I can’t let you dine here tonight. This establishment has a necktie policy for the evening meal and you are not wearing one.” The boater said, “I’m sure I don’t have a tie on my boat!” The dockhand, not wanting to turn away a customer, said, “Well, whydon’tyoujustfindsomethingthat approximates a tie. I’m sure that will be okay.” After some time, the boater emerged from his cabin sporting a pair of jumper cables. “Sorry.” the boater said, “but this isallIcouldfindtoputaroundmyneck.” Sighing, the dockhand said, “Okay, I’ll let you in with those, but just don’t start anything.”

Time for New Year’sFinancial Resolutions

Once again, it’s time to make some New Year’s resolutions. This year, in addition to hit-ting the gym, learning that second language and getting better organized, why not also consider a few financial resolutions?

What types of resolutions

might you consider? Here are a few sugges-tions:

Contribute more to your retirement accounts. The new year means that you are one year closer to retirement. To help yourself build resources for the lifestyle you’ve envisioned as a retiree, try to boost your contributions to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retire-ment plan. You can do this if you get a salary increase and devote at least part of it to your 401(k). At the same time, try to “max out” on your Individual Retirement Account (IRA). For 2012, you can contribute up to $5,000 to an IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older.Reduce your debts. Look for ways to cut down or consolidate your debts. It may not be easy, but it’s worth the effort because the lower your debt load, the more money you’ll have avail-able to invest for the future.Build an emergency fund. If you don’t already have an emergency fund containing between six and 12 months’ worth of living expenses, start building one soon. Keep the money in a liquid vehicle — one that’s separate from your every-day checking and savings accounts. Without such an emergency fund, you may be forced to dip into your long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a major car repair, a new furnace or a large medical bill.Don’t overreact to volatility. In 2011, the finan-cial markets have been volatile, with big gains followed by big drops followed by big gains — a true roller-coaster pattern. Try not to let large, short-term price movements influence your investment decisions. Many of the factors that cause jumps or declines are not that relevant to long-term results — and as an investor, you want to focus on the long term. Concentrate on building a portfolio that’s suitable for your individual goals and risk tolerance.Be aware of different types of risk. For many investors, “investment risk” strictly means the possibility of losing principal when the value of an investment drops. Consequently, to cut back on their risk in the face of a volatile market, they may sell off stocks and load up on certificates of deposit (CDs), bonds and other so-called “safer” investments. But each invest-ment actually carries its own type of risk. For example, if you own CDs that pay a 2 percent return, and the inflation rate is 3 percent, you will lose purchasing power over time. And if you wanted to sell your bonds before they had matured, you’d have to sell them at a discount if the market interest rate had risen above the “coupon” rate of your bond because no one would pay you full price for them. Just be

aware that no investment is “risk-free,” and try to build a diversified portfolio that can lessen the impact of one specific type of risk.By following these suggestions, you can go a long way toward making 2012 a good year in which to make progress toward your important financial goals. So plan ahead — and make the right moves.

¥ “Set up a phone call between kids and grandparents a week or so before visiting. They can talk about what the kids might like to do. It gives the grandparents time to prepare, and it gives kids a chance to build excitement before the trip.” -- G.R. in Ohio

¥ Clean and disinfect a wood cutting board with salt and lemon juice. Sprinkle the board with a healthy dose of plain salt (kosher or coarse salt works best), and scrub it with a cut half of a lemon. Rinse and clean with soap and water.

¥ Hairspray spritzed on the end of a thread will stiffen it long enough to get it through a needle head. You also can thread your needle in front of a surface that’s an opposing color (e.g., a white piece of paper while threading a needle with black thread).

¥ “When shopping for seamless bras, bring a T-shirt that is relatively tight-fitting to wear over the bras. You will know right away if there are seam lines or if the cup is too small. These issues sometimes get overlooked when a bra is worn under a looser shirt.” -- E.D. in Ontario, Canada

¥ Another use for baking soda: It’s a perfect exfoliator. It’s good for the whole body and is pH-neutral, so it won’t overdry skin. To use it, just make a paste and rub onto skin. Rinse, and enjoy the softness.

¥ Cold and flu got you down? Once you clear those symptoms, try gargling with saltwater. It reduces inflammation in your throat and washes away irritants and bacteria.
