Tafoya Through the years there have been many industrial developments, but no other industry has undergone the rapid growth of the plastics industry. Millions of dollars are spent yearly in plastics research to find new and improved plastics and to find ways to lower the cost of producing plastics. To quote Mr. McGuire from the 1967 movie “The Graduate,” “I want to say one word to you. Just one word. Plastics.” Make your way down this timeline to learn more about these amazing materials. • 1862: The world was introduced to plastic at the Great International Exhibition in London by British chemist Alexander Parkes. Parkes formulated a material he called Parkesine, which was derived from organic cellulose (part of the cell wall of green plants). Once heated, this substance could be molded, and it retained its shape when cooled. The product failed due to the high cost of production and its highly flammable nature. • 1869: A $10,000 prize was offered for the discovery of a new material to replace the use of ivory in the making of billiard balls. American printer John Wesley Hyatt entered the contest and discovered what he called “Celluloid.” Celluloid was synthesized from cotton fiber and the plant material camphor, and could be molded into desired shapes. turn the page for more! PLASTICS (continued)

bull One big drawback was the flammable nature of celluloid the balls had a tendency to explode on contact The plastic was used as a substitute for amber and tortoiseshell and was later used for film in photography and movies

bull 1920 Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC was developed to replace increasingly costly natural rubber Approximately 75 percent of all PVC manufactured today is used in construction materials as well as upholstery clothing piping flexible hoses tubing flooring roofing membranes shower curtains and electrical cable insulation PVC is useful because it resists fire and water

bull 1933 Polyethylene was discovered by accident by two chemists in Northwich England It proved to have excellent insulating properties and was used during World War II to insulate radar systems for airplanes Today polyethylene makes up the largest volume of plastic in the world with an annual production of approximately 80 million metric tons Itrsquos cheap flexible durable and chemically resistant It is used in soda bottles milk jugs plastic bags and food storage containers

bull 1933 Polyvinylidene Chloride was discovered at Dow Chemical PVDC was found to be resistant to oxygen water acids bases and solvents and creates a barrier against oxygen moisture chemicals and heat It was originally used to protect military equipment The substance was sprayed on fighter planes to protect them against saltwater After Dow discovered PVDC would cling to almost any surface Saran Wrap was introduced to the public in 1953

bull 1937 Polyurethane was first developed as a replacement for rubber at the beginning of WWII This organic polymer was invented by Friedrich Bayer of Germany It is now used for mattresses furniture padding and thermal insulation It is also used for sports wear fabrics such as ldquolycrardquo

bull 1938 A chemist working for DuPont named Roy Plunkett discovered Teflon Plunkett pumped Freon gas into a cylinder left in cold storage overnight The gas dissipated leaving a slippery solid white powder He found this powder to be impervious to acids cold and heat It was ideal for use in the lining of pots and pans to make them stick-free and is widely used in kitchenware today

bull 1939 The first nylon stockings were introduced by DuPont labs at the New York Worldrsquos Fair in 1939-1940 During the 1940s cheap synthetic polymers such as nylon acrylic neoprene and

polyethylene began to replace the use of natural materials in many things One example is nylon replacing animal hairs in toothbrushes

bull 1948 ABS or Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene was first discovered during World War II as an alternative to rubber ABS was patented in 1948 and introduced to commercial markets in 1954 It is a tough light-weight plastic resistant to heat and has the ability to be injection molded and extruded which makes it useful in the manufacture of many different products like piping musical instruments golf club heads car parts and some toys including Legos

bull Even some tattoo inks use particles of ABS ground down to less than a micrometer in diameter to make the colors more vivid

bull 1953 Chemist Dr Daniel Fox of GE became one of the discoverers of the polycarbonate resin that was patented as Lexan He found that once the gooey substance hardened it could not be broken or destroyed without great effort In 1968 the company began using sheets of Lexan in bus and train windows and to make bullet-resistant laminates Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore pressure helmets made of Lexan as they took the first steps on the moon The material is also used in football helmets traffic signal housing units car headlights fighter jet windshields car dashboards laptop housings CDs DVDs and cell phones

bull 1954 Polystyrene foam more commonly known as Styrofoam was discovered in 1839 Dow Chemical introduced Styrofoam to the public in 1954 The material is used for packaging as a building material and in toys and other household items

bull 1965 DuPont scientist Stephanie Kwolek developed a way to spin fiber from liquid crystalline solutions The resulting material was lightweight flexible and five times as strong ounce for ounce as steel This later became known as Kevlar and is used to make various military and police protection products including flak jackets bulletproof vests and other protective wear

bull 1979 Polar fleece is a soft napped insulating synthetic fabric made from Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and other synthetic fibers Polar Fleece was first created in 1979 by Malden Mills now Polartec LLC The goal was to develop a new light yet strong pile fabric that could mimic and in some ways surpass wool Fleece has some of woolrsquos finest qualities but weighs a fraction in comparison is more lightweight than other polyester fabrics and doesnrsquot hold moisture

Last week we talked about the importance of understanding the financial story of your business Letrsquos carry on our conversation with whatrsquos missing with many business owners when it comes to your businessrsquos finances

What is missing is a simple easily understandable accounting framework that will allow you to (1) make sense of what story your numbers are telling you and (2) elicit powerful communication with your accountant and advisors to move your business forward What if accounting was as simple as organizing information in a way that makes sense to you ndash where did the money come from and where did the money go to

Organizing your financial information using a simple framework and dialoguing on the basis of where did the money come from and where did the money go enables you to make decisions from the whole Without this holistic view business owners often make decisions from a piece of the whole thereby potentially being in action in the wrong areas Having a holistic view of your businessrsquos finances gives you a different picture and a different set of actions(Source Accounting Comes Alive International)

Through our holistic approach we are committed to bringing clarity simplicity and sustainability to the financial aspects of your business We bring fun and ease into your learning

Pet BitsKeep your pet on the right path

to a long healthy life

(NC)mdashA recent study by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and Hillrsquos Pet Nutrition found that on an average weekday pet owners spend three times as much time watching TV and nearly twice as much time surfing the Internet as they do playing with or exercising their pets

The same survey suggests that exercise along with weight management good nutrition and dental care are keys to enhancing pet health across the country

Here are four ways pet owners can keep their pets on the path to a long and healthy life

1 - Incorporate regular play and exercise with pets into your schedule Itrsquos a great opportunity for pet owners to become more active themselves If your pet has poor mobility speak to your veterinarian about how to help them become more active Consider a pet food designed for healthy mobility

2 - Make dental care part of your pet care routine with brushing and regular veterinary dental cleanings Proper dental care helps avoid serious oral problems and can improve your petrsquos quality of life There is pet food specifically designed to maintain healthy oral health such as Hillrsquos Science Diet Oral Care

3 - Choose a pet food thatrsquos right for the age-related and health needs of your pet so they get the right balance of nutrients to help prevent a range of health issues You should also speak to your veterinarian about the feeding method thatrsquos right for your pet

4 - Learn to recognize the visible signs of pet health problems such as obesity or weight loss bad breath flaky skin or a dull coat

Paris isnrsquot just for lovers Itrsquos for indulgent gluttons and winos too Which means for me at least itrsquos the promised landJust so wersquove got this covered anyone who knows anything about food knows that French chefs are culinary masterminds revolutionaries and downright demigods when it comes to the world of gastronomy Italians too sure but this love letter is strictly to Paris Beautiful grand glamorous Paris where excess reigns supreme and debauchery is truly an art form At least for usBasically anytime we artistes find ourselves in Europe we think up some excuse to hop a train and spend at least a

few days in the City of Light and this trip certainly wasnrsquot going to be any exceptionhellip even though the city was in the middle of a political upheaval complete with strikes protests tear gas you name it But who doesnrsquot want to be able to say ldquoI got tear gassed in Parisrdquo Or even better ldquoI got tear gassed while drunk on cognac and eating a quiche in Parisrdquo The truth was of course sensationalism in the media had gotten the better of common sense yet again and aside from a few train delays and a handful of half-hearted protesters performing for the tourists in front of Notre Dame everything was fine No not fine grande Magnifique Formidable Okay Irsquoll stopA play-by-play on how it all went down

dAY oNe10AM We arrived on a fresh crisp gorgeous sunny morning perfect for a walk through the Jardin du Luxembourg and stopped at our lovely little hotel in St-Germain-des-Pres to drop off our bags ( wwwhotel-luxembourgcom ) Of course nothing goes better with a walk than a pastry and a coffee so we high-tailed it to our favorite bakery Bread and Roses This bakery is the real deal fresh sandwiches made with prosciutto and fig or ripe tomato and burrata cheese ham and cheese tarts croissants oozing with chocolate and dusted with powdered sugar etc Itrsquos hard to have any self-control really We selected some warm pain au chocolat a flaky buttery pastry with a chocolate-y center and a cafe creme which is the equivalent of a really really good latte And

then we ran outta there before things got out of hand Bread and Roses wwwbreadandrosesfr

1PM After some dutiful sightseeing and picture takingndash the Pantheon to pick out which tomb would be ours and Notre Dame to ldquoclimb the stairs to the toprdquo which is about as likely to happen as Napoleon meeting us up therendash we decided it was time for some wine I mean lunch Since we were all walked out for the moment we settled on what looked suspiciously like a tourist trap just across the ldquoruerdquo from the cathedral a bistro called La Boucherie Honestly it was the waiter wearing skinny black jeans with a cig hanging out of his mouth beckoning us in that kind of sealed the deal I cannot turn down a passionate Frenchman We were seated at a little table overlooking the street to watch the world go by and within minutes we were settled with a bottle of grenache and some snacks a beautifully simple and delicious ham and cheese sandwich for me and a plate of flipping spaghetti bolognese for Matt because apparently he thought we were in Rome La Boucherie wwwlabucheriefr

EXCLUSIVE TO TIDBITSTHE YALE HOTEL ndash AN ICON Part I of III

Itrsquos all ldquoRock amp Rollrdquo at the Yale Hotel according to Marketing Manager Stella PanagiotidisTidbits Vancouver and Tidbits Tri-Cities sat down and chatted with Stella and Director of Operations Joe Luciak about the history and the future of the legendary hotel

Tidbits What is the history of the Yale Hotel

Stella and Joe The Yale Hotel began in the mid 1880rsquos as a CPR bunkhouse where workers relaxed after clearing land for the new community of Vancouver On June 13 1886 an unusually strong blast of wind set fire raging through the city In less than 45 minutes 1000 wooden structures were destroyed The Yale separated by bush from the main area of Vancouver was one of the few that survived

Soon after that dramatic event the Yale became a popular gathering place for the community The building was refurbished and by 1889 was renamed the Colonial Hotel It served miners loggers fishermen and CPR workers who trudged up an Indian trail in the woods from False Creek There was a stable below the street level for the occasional carriage trade

By night the hotel became a haunt for the workers and their friends Yaletown had a reputation for wild nightlife and the activity at the Colonial was supposedly the wildest The hotel was named the Yale again in 1911

Meanwhile deep in the southern United States the black culture gave birth to the

blues Rhythm and blues is perceived in many ways Sometimes glamorous sometimes heart-wrenching the blues wound its way through

the history of America and emerged as a Canadian tradition at the YaleToday after more than two decades of this tradition the Yale is the focal point for rhythm and blues in Western Canada The icons of traditional blues as well as new talent come by to play and jam Pop stars and screen personalities

frequent the Yale to hear their RampB idols As well the Yale recently built its own precision engineered recording studio In the basement where stable boys used to groom the horses the Yale today records live performances to promote up-and-coming local blues players and to raise funds for charities Join us next week for another exclusive interview with the proprietors find out who their favorite performers have been and information on their upcoming celebrations
