TIDINGSTIDINGSTo Celebrate A New Ministry

What a joyful celebration on May 28th for the Celebration of a New Ministry—that official service instituting our relationship as rector and parish. (Great pics on page 7!) I deeply appreciate the hospitality at church (and reception!) to my family and out-of-town friends and clergy who attended, and I appreciate the time on a busy holiday weekend that all attendees gave to celebrate the warmth of the bonds we are creating. Thank you, vestry, discernment committee, and parish, and especially Doreen Hastings, for all the personal touches. Actually, I think that’s why Celebrations of a New Ministry come 2-3 months into a rector’s tenure—so that priest and parish do know each other on a more profound level than comes with the first hello.

Besides the more personal moments of receiving symbols of ministry (like a Bible, a stole, holy oils, and a golf club!) from members of the parish, the moment that stays with me still is kneeling in the aisle in the middle of the church to vow the following as your new rector:

O Lord my God, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; yet you have called your servant to stand in your house, and to serve at your altar.

To you and to your service I devote myself, body, soul, and spirit. Fill my memory with the record of your mighty works;

enlighten my understanding with the light of your Holy Spirit; and may all the desires of my heart and will

center in what you would have me do. Make me an instrument of your salvation for the people entrusted to my care,

and grant that I may faithfully administer your holy Sacraments, and by my life and teaching set forth your true and living Word.

Be always with me in carrying out the duties of my ministry. In prayer, quicken my devotion; in praises, heighten my love and gratitude; in preaching, give me readiness of thought and expression; and grant that,

by the clearness and brightness of your holy Word, all the world maybe drawn into your blessed kingdom.

All this I ask for the sake of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. --BCP 562

Truly, these words of prayer and commitment I should say every day, not just one day! They ring so true to one’s call for ministry. But…are they just words for me to say? BAZAAR/AUCTION TIME!

Thanks to all the many volunteers, donors and soon-to-be buyers who will make both the Auction and Bazaar one of our most successful! The Auction is Friday, July 8th at Hines Hall at 4. (Bidding begins at 4, refreshments begin at 5, and they go quickly! There is a $5 admission charge ) The Bazaar is Saturday, July 9, at the Community Center from 9 to 1 pm. There is no charge for this event.

The Auction Committee has put together some very spectacular items. A complete 1954 Lionel train set which has been rewired and reserviced and is boxed with its track and automatic Gatehouse will be auctioned. Two dining opportunities will be popular: one is a New Orleans Jazz Brunch given by the Summerours and Doreen Hastings, and the other is a romantic Mountain Soiree given by Kathleen Rivers and James Farmer. Want to sit in Chris Evert’s area at Wimbledon and look for the Queen? Oh, and by the way, 2 Delta airline tickets will help to get you and a best friend there. Furniture, trips and art will all be part of the entertainment of the Live Auction.

Looking for bargains on some of the best things on the Plateau? The Silent Auction might be just your cup of tea. Bargains will abound for the lucky bidders. Remember: all the money we raise at the Auction and Bazaar goes to the Outreach funds which are given each year to the non-profits in our community which help those who need it most.

Saturday will find the Bazaar volunteers all ready for the hundreds of people who come to buy beautiful sets of china, scuba diving equipment, baby high chairs, toys and games, gorgeous linens, more golf equipment than most retail stores, everything Christmas, all one needs for kitchen cabinets and drawers, luggage, fabric, baskets, and some things we have no idea what they are! All are priced to sell, if you are looking for a bargain.

We are grateful to Wendy DeNoon, our Parish administrator, who has helped all of us so much in many ways. Come out to both these events to help us reach our goal and have a great time, as well. The Bazaar builds camaraderie among our members, makes needed goods available to those in our community without many resources, and provides needed funds to most of the non-profits in our area. I think all our efforts must make Jesus smile!

Stewardship 2017We Thank. We Serve. We Give.

As I think of what to write about stewardship, and consider what it means - care, use and preservation of God’s gifts, I remember one of my favorite hymns we sang joyfully at St. Mark’s: All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful - the Lord God made them all.” When I was ten, I didn’t know what that meant, but it lifted our spirits high, and we now know more of what we were learning.

The blessings of our lives, this beautiful church, wonderful people, the magic of these mountains, and all the freedoms we enjoy are God’s creation; and we are called to cel-

ebrate, enjoy, protect and preserve this bounty throughout our earthly journey - praising and thanking God, and loving our neighbors as ourselves.

Let us, just as joyfully, praise God from whom all blessings flow, for of his own, do we give to him. By the way, it’s hymn# 405, maybe we could sing it? --John Bissell, Stewardship Committee

Planned Giving Corner

Lots of folks think that life insurance proceeds are not subject to estate taxes, but in fact, life insurance is subject to estate taxes according to what the IRS refers to as “incidents of ownership.” What this means is that if you own the policy and pay the premiums, the amount of the policy is included in your taxable estate for purposes of determining estate taxes. So, how might this outcome be avoided?

Fortunately, for those who are looking for ways to support Good Shepherd through their estate plans, there is a popular, easy and convenient way to accomplish this with a life insurance policy. Generally, such a gift should be whole-life and not term insurance.

Several ways exist to make a planned gift of life insurance and avoid “incidents of ownership:”• Purchase a new policy and make Good Shepherd the owner and beneficiary (premiums that you pay are then tax deductible).• Make Good Shepherd the owner and beneficiary of an existing policy (the cash value of the policy is deductible, plus any future premiums).

How might this work in reality? Well, here are two examples.

Mr. Parishioner, at age 50 and in great health, requested that Good Shepherd purchase a whole-life insurance policy for $100,000 on his life, payable to Good Shepherd at his death. The modest premiums he pays will be paid up, probably in less than a decade, and because Good Shepherd is the owner and beneficiary, the premiums are tax-deductible.

Mrs. Parishioner has a full-paid policy with a cash value of $25,000. She could make Good Shepherd the owner of the policy, thus allowing her an immediate income tax deduction for the cash value of the gift.

Don’t forget, this column is not intended to be legal or tax advice. Please consult your own legal or tax advisor to discuss your individual situation. --Malinda Allen, Endowment Board Chair

Vestry Notes

Greetings from your Vestry!

As stated in the “Vestry Resource Guide” we work collaboratively with other vestry members and the rector to create a vision and plan of action that reflects God’s dream for our congregation! Also the guide provides the following as our responsibilities:

“Vestry members are legal representatives and agents of the parish, charged with specific responsibilities by the canons of The Episcopal Church. They share leadership responsibilities with the rector. “ At Good Shepherd we meet monthly (3rd Wednesday of the month) at 4:00 p.m. , and we are engaged in lots of ministry in between.

We held our first Vestry Retreat with Fr. Rob on May 14 at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley, and we focused on many ‘big picture’ parts of our ministry together. During this meeting we discussed and brainstormed our strengths and the needs of Good Shepherd for the rest of 2016. After this discussion, we decided to focus on four goals.

1. Continue and Expand Outreach – Doreen Hastings, David Jones, Peter Keck & Carroll Summerour2. Insure Sustainability of what we have – John Bissell, Ralph Greene & John Kirts3. Add Families and Children – Bill Canby, Sharon Stricker & Father Rob4. Bring and Restore People to Good Shepherd – Madge Ramey, Alice Stanly & Judy King Williams

In creating these small groups, and we want and need your parishioner involvement as well! If you are interested in participating in these please reach out to any of the members of the focus areas.

In our June 15th meeting we discussed required training with in the Diocese of Western NC, including Safeguarding God’s Children, God’s People, and Anti-racism training. We are even looking to host the education for the Deanery at Good Shepherd, in case others need it.

Father Rob reported two hopes in his June report: First, to be good stewards of creation with our supplies (cups, plates etc.) by eliminating all Styrofoam and ordering biodegradable supplies plates, cups, and take-out containers in bulk through the church office. Please help in these efforts as well; Second, he reported his hope to explore a special scholarship fund for seminarians that will not only help in their education but may even create a type of summer internship for them. Both the vestry and finance committee have endorsed the exploration.

As usual, members reported on their areas of responsibility. Over all everyone is very busy with summer in full swing and the Auction and Bazaar are right around the corner. Fr. Rob has been meeting with new members, as well. Financially, our budget for the year (to-date) is in the black.

Please reach out to any Vestry member at any time if you have questions.

--Judy King Williams, Clerk

Lectionary Class

Bible Study, Wednesdays at 11 a.m. in the Adult Education classroom. All are welcome. Fr. Rob will lead this class as we ‘read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest’ the lessons (the Lectionary) for the upcoming

Sunday. You may bring your Bibles; the readings will also be provided. Even if you have never been to a Bible Study, don’t worry. This class will be informal discussions, and you will find that it greatly enriches your Sunday worship.

The Men’s Book and Bible Study (which meets Thursday’s at 9 am) will finish its study of Philippians and turn to the novel, The Great Divorce, by C. S. Lewis, for July and August. This short novel is not about human divorce, but about the great divorce humans create in walking away from God, as the quotation below suggests. Like Lewis’s fiction about Narnia, The Great Divorce is masterful fiction with characters we can identify with all too well. Books are $10 from the office, or feel free to get your own copy…and join us each week.

“There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, “Thy will be done,” and those to whom God says, in the end, “Thy will be done.” All that are in Hell, choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek find. Those who knock it is opened.” ― C.S. Lewis, The Great Divorce

Education

Guest Preachers:

The Good Shepherd Tradition Continues. We welcome The Rev. Dan Matthews and The Rt. Rev. Stacy Sauls this summer. Please note the dates they will be with us (below) and welcome them again as they share the good news with us.

The Rev. Dan Matthews--July 10, 2016--all services

“Jesus saw the beauty beneath the simple shepherd caring for his sheep. He saw in a hated Samaritan the generous, caring concerned person. He saw in a forgiving father an example of the way we are to forgive each other. And he sees in you a beauty that you don’t even know you possess, and he utterly adores you. He calls you and me in that love to come into His Kingdom and learn the new language, the language of love, the language of reaching out and caring, the language of not seeing on the surface of things but seeing in depth. The language of Jesus is the language we go to church to brush up on so that when we leave the church building and head out into the world we might remember the language and speak it to a world so hungry for God’s love.” - from a years-ago sermon at Good Shepherd, Cashiers.

The Rt. Rev. Stacy Sauls--August 7, 2016--all services

“I find myself hoping on the morning after Paris that it’s the doubters to whom the commission to make disciples is given. I find myself hoping that for the welfare of the world. I find myself hoping that because, at least in my own experience, doubt is hardly antithetical to faith. It is the precondition of it. Without it, faith is merely ignorance or naivety or blindness. Faith is hardly the absence of doubt. It is conviction coupled with doubt, and it is to that faith that Jesus entrusts the salvation of the world. It is that faith that the gates of hell will not prevail against. It is a salvation that may have no greater enemy than certainty. And it is that faith that is our particular vocation, as full of doubt as we may be, as full of doubt as I hope we are. Amen.” - From Saturday November 14, 2015, the morning after the Paris attacks.

THE REV. CANON JOSÉ McLOUGHLIN ELECTED AS SEVENTH BISHOP of WNC

On June 25, the Rev. Canon José A. McLoughlin was elected as the seventh bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina. During a special Electing Convention at Trinity Episcopal Church in Asheville, the Rev. Canon McLoughlin was chosen from among four final candidates to lead the Episcopal Church in Western North Carolina, representing 15,000 members in 63 year-round congregations, six summer chapels and two conference centers.

McLoughlin will join the diocese in September and will be consecrated as bishop on October 1. He replaces the Rt. Rev. G. Porter Taylor, the sixth bishop of the diocese, who was consecrated as bishop in 2004.

Ordained in 2005, McLoughlin earned his Masters in Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Central Florida. Prior to his call to the priesthood, McLoughlin worked in the Criminal Justice field serving in the State of Florida as a Police Officer and in the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. in various capacities, most recently as the Special Assistant/Senior Advisor to the Assistant Attorney General.

McLoughlin and his wife Laurel have been married for 23 years, and together have two children, Alexander, 17, and Alyson, 14. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, McLoughlin is bilingual, enjoys music, playing the drums, and studying 18th century American history.

In his nomination profile, McLoughlin wrote, “I think the Church today longs for a new type of bishop. A bishop who is truly engaged in the ministry and lives of people within the diocese; engaged in mission and evangelism; a bishop willing to sit with the people of the diocese and explore new ways to be disciples of Christ.”

As an historic parish, Good Shepherd has much to celebrate and remember. We hope to create a Guild of Parish Historians who can help to share that history through pictures, stories, and archives…and in Tidings a bit each month. If you would like to be part of that Guild, or if you have historic pictures, clippings, and the like to share, please contact Fr. Rob. And look for our Parish History night, coming in August! History Shorts:• 1884 – The first cornerstone of the parish was laid by the Rev. Archibald Deal.• 1887 – The church valued at $3,000 with a seating capacity of 200.• 1889 – The buildings and 15 acres were deeded to the church by Col. Christopher Hampton.• 1892 – August 21 – The bells rings for the first time.• 1892—August 23 – Original church destroyed by fire, rumors of arson. Only the Bible and baptismal font remained. • 1895 – current church is dedicated, and functions as a successful summer chapel• 1948 – Mr. Henry Conkle becomes the Church Warden, serves for 31 years• 1979 – year-round services begun• 1984 – Good Shepherd moves from ‘mission’ to full parish status• 1986 – The first Auction and Bazaar were held
