M omentous events continue to envelope our world and it is sometimes hard to know what the future might look like and, consequently, how we should ‘do’ life. In one particularly turbulent episode of his reign, king David asks:

‘If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?’ (Ps.11: 3). When

all around seems to be in free fall how should God’s people invest the time and resources that they have? David’s answer is arrived at by focusing on God rather than on his circumstances. So, in verse 4 David reminds himself that ‘the Lord’s throne is in heaven’ (v.4). In other words, he remembers that God’s in charge – he’s the boss! Our own world, including the places where live and work, may appear to lack the leadership required to steer us through the challenges that face us but ultimately true leadership, true government lies with the Lord—the one who is in his holy temple, enthroned in heaven. For David, this will have provided him with the perspective (the big picture) he needed to make the right decisions for his own life. I think it’s also helpful for us to take a

step back from our own circumstances and to allow our understanding of

God to inform our perspective.

Secondly, David focuses on God’s character: ‘For the Lord is righteous; he loves righteous deeds…’ (v.7). God is not some distant capricious deity—his Lordship would then be a terrifying vision of the universe. Rather, the Lord is righteous—a word that speaks of faithfulness, justice and truth. He is also a concerned and passionate God—one who ‘loves righteous deeds’. With confidence we can persevere with doing life in a righteous way—

being faithful, being just and being truthful. David’s renewed revelation of

God helps him to find a place of perspective and understanding. More wonderfully still, it enables him to grasp the path that leads to the deepest longing of the human heart: ‘the upright shall behold his (the Lord’s) face’ (v.7b). Psalm 11 speaks a word of encouragement and hope at a time when the events in our own lives can feel like they are being shaken to

the foundations.

The Alpha Course

Later this month we shall be starting an Alpha course here at St Matthias’. Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life in an informal and non-threatening context. For further details visit the parish website at www.stmatthias.ie.

Children’s Harvest Festival Offering

As detailed in this edition of TIDINGS the parish—Harvest Thanksgiving—will be held

on Sunday 9th October 2011. It is customary that our younger members make a special donation at Harvest time to other children, either in Ireland or elsewhere in

the world.

Being mindful of the appalling tragedy that is afflicting the people of Somalia at this time, we wish to advise that at this year’s

service, we will welcome monetary gifts (in an envelope) from the children and younger members of the parish. Further details

will be announced.

All Age Worship 7th August 2011

We wish to offer a very BIG THANK YOU to all who participated in this service. Thank you to

Kate and Philip who read the Bible readings. Our thanks also go to Ben and Amy who led us in our prayers. Finally our thanks to the ‘Helpers’ Amy and Bailey for helping us to fully understand the

significance of sinking and floating!

A word from…………...

D uring the summer I was most fortunate in

that I had the wonderful opportunity to have

access to quite an extensive DVD movie library. Watching

movies can stir within us a wide range of feelings and emotions—excitement,

anger, joy and sadness to mention but some of them. Perhaps however one

of the chief reasons, for watching movies is for pure enjoyment.

‘Defiance’ is a movie about the Bielski partisans who rescued Jews from

extermination and fought against the occupying Nazi forces in Poland.

‘The Interpreter’ tells the story (strangely enough) about an interpreter

working at the United Nations in New York who overhears a discussion

about an assassination plot.

‘The Way Back’’ recounts the story of a group of prisoners who escape

from a Siberian Gulag camp during World War II and trek across the

Himalayas to reach ‘freedom’ in India.

These three movies which I have chosen all involve ‘ordinary’ people who

did what they did because they felt compelled to do something about and

with the situation in which they found themselves. ‘Defiance’ is in many

ways a struggle for and against leadership. ‘The Interpreter’ illustrates the

choices that face each one of us – to turn our back and walk away or to

stand firm and be counted. Finally there is ‘The Way Back’ which can be

viewed as an example of human endeavor—the conquering spirit.

As we look ahead to the recommencement of parish activities after the

summer break, perhaps there are those who are seeking to find ‘The Way

Back’ to a more meaningful faith. Undoubtedly many of us are seeking or

looking for ‘The Interpreter’ who will help us to understand rather than

struggling in ‘Defiance’. The Good News is that these queries, concerns and

questions will be addressed in the ‘ALPHA COURSE’ which will take place

during the coming months.

The three words— The Way Back—are of immense importance to all of us. I

am reminded of the words of Jesus himself who said: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” —John 14 v 6

For a good few years, I have had

the pleasure of directing the children's choir in our

parish.

We had great moments with easy songs and more

challenging ones; with a bigger group of children or a

smaller one; with sometimes shy singing children or

very confident ones; and singing for family services or

special celebrations. I really enjoyed all these events;

and I wish to thank the children for their

enthusiasm, the parents for their support and the

parishioners for their continued appreciation.

However, Gordon and I feel it is time to move on and

adopt a new approach to music making for young people

in the parish. Please keep an eye out for what's

happening over the next few weeks!

Warmest greetings from Gahogo, St Matthias

parish.

We, Rev Venant and Rev Prosper, are very

happy to hear that you are still keeping

Gahogo St Matthias parish in your thoughts,

prayers and plans. We are sorry that you

missed the news of the parish after the

sudden leave of Rev. Kabango J. Wesley who had been in contact with you. Therefore, we

are sending you this message to let you know the current situation of the parish. You

already know of the little change that happened in the leadership of the Parish; since

March 2011 Rev. Prosper KARASIRA is in charge of the parish but Rev Venant has not left.

We are working together whilst he is serving as diocesan Assistant Administrator as well.

We still remember the partnership of our both parishes, and the great contribution you

provided to get the land and the house. We still keep some photos of you (Rev. Ian, Vanya

and Debbie) from your stay in Rwanda in May last year and we showed them to the guests

we had from Ireland.

We really enjoyed seeing Canon Ken Rue, his wife and Joan. They gave us your greetings,

your letter, the song album, the gifts of cups for the guest house where the Christians can

read the names of St Matthias Killiney and St Matthias Gahogo parishes. We have been

surprised by your commitment to supporting our parish, including the children. We

appreciated their good Album and listened to it while it was presented to us by Canon

Ken. Give our greetings to Rev. Ian. We are very encouraged by hearing that Rev. William is

so ready to continue the existing partnership. We do pray for his work in St Matthias Parish.

Many thanks again for your continued support. May God bless you in your work.

With the opening of the Dublin and Kingstown (now Dun Laoghaire)

railway in 1834, giving increased facility of access from Dublin to the

south county suburbs, the population grew rapidly that within the next

thirty three years no fewer than eight churches were built, where not

one was known before, and the first church opened was our very own

St Matthias, Killiney/Ballybrack in 1835. Courtesy of Bob Wallace

Parish Centre Redevelopment

The planning application for our hall refurbishment was submitted by David Smith, Architect, to DLRCOCO on 9th August 2011.

“Planning permission is sought for the construction of a new single storey

sloped roof extension, the introduction of 13 No. new Velux roof windows and the

internal refurbishment to the existing parochial hall, a separate building within

the grounds of St Matthias’ Church, Church Road, Killiney, County Dublin, a

protected structure.”

The planning process will take 3 months. Parishioners can view the drawings that will be displayed in the Church.

A Cat's Prayer by Anonymous

Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray this cushy life to keep.

I pray for toys that look like mice,

And sofa cushions, soft and nice.

I pray for gourmet kitty snacks,

And someone nice to scratch my back,

For windowsills all warm and bright,

For shadows to explore at night.

I pray I'll always stay real cool

And keep the secret feline rule -

To NEVER tell a human that

The world is really ruled by CATS!

Gardeners Corner

By Frances Askins

The Care of Cut FLowers

In warm dry weather, gather your flowers etc. early in the morning so that they will not flag.

Remove all unwanted leaves, especially the lower ones so that the water will pass right up

to the flower heads. Also, leaves left on the stem below the water line will foul the water

in the vase. In the case of plants with a heavy flower head such as lilac, it is advisable to

remove all the leaves and to add leaf sprays without blooms on them, or to use

alternative foliage.

Bruise the bottom of the stems of all woody plant material such as shrubs, Roses, Chrysanthemums, Wall flowers etc. to facilitate the easy intake of water. Plant stems which exude a milky substance should have their ends sealed immediately after picking by dipping in boiling water, or by holding them over a gas jet.

If possible, give everything a good drink in a bucket before arranging. This is particularly important if they are being placed eventually in a shallow container and are to be taken on a journey, so that they will arrive still fresh. Some plants will never recover properly if they have once been allowed to wilt. Hydrangeas should be entirely immersed in water for several hours, or overnight, if they are to last well. I do this in my water barrel or one could use the bath! If you like your tulips to remain straight and not bend, wrap paper round the bunch right up to the neck of the blooms and steep in plenty of water for several hours. Place your flower arrangements where they will be out of draughts and away from excessive heat. Never put them in a very sunny window. Top up with water daily but do not empty or refill the container as this will only disturb the flowers.

I have often read that tulips and daffodils should not be arranged

together as they are not compatible, but personally I have never

found this to be so!

Clondanagh Cottage, Clare

W hat do you get when

you introduce a donkey

to a good old West of

Ireland folk—ten more

donkeys! Our very indefatigable

hostess cannot

help having them.

My friend and I got

infected and she nearly convinced us to

run away with a few, if only they fitted

into our car! By the way, if you prefer the

swimming version, there are lots of fins to

have with the numerous fishing lakes that

abound nearby. If you are travelling to the

West anytime, do drop in to Clondanagh

Cottage, you may find you will want to stay on and be immersed in the Irish Wild

West—as good as they come and get! ~ Susie Tyler ~
