Parking Permits If your son or daughter drives to school and has not purchased a 2010-2011 William B. Travis High School parking permit, they are at or past the deadline. To purchase a parking permit, your son or daughter will need a valid Texas Driver License, proof of insurance (with their name listed as a driver), thirty five dollars (cash or money order), and a completed 2010-2011 William B. Travis High School parking permit application. Parking permit applications are available at the front office. Any student in violation of parking on campus without a permit will be assessed a forty dollar fine in addition to the cost of a permit. Officer S. Hall(281) 634-7060 [email protected]

New Tardy Procedures We are anxiously looking forward to the start of another fabulous year at Travis High School. We have taken steps to ensure that all of our students will have the opportunity to absorb every minute of the valuable instructional time provided in their classes. We will accomplish this with our new tardy polices and procedures. Essentially, we will have hall sweeps every day, every period, in every hallway of the building. Tardy students will be sent to one of several tardy stations strategically placed throughout the building. There, they will have to present their school ID and have their tardy entered into our computer system. After having their tardy recorded students will be personally escorted to their class by a staff member. This year all students will be expected to keep their school ID’s on their person and visible throughout the instructional day. More importantly, each student will be expected to arrive to each of their classes on time, prepared, and ready to learn! T.W. Graham, Jr., Associate Principal

Student MealsMeal PricesBreakfast $1.25Lunch - Elementary $1.75Lunch - Secondary $2.00Breakfast - Reduced .30¢Lunch - Reduced .40¢Children need healthy meals to learn. Fort Bend I.S.D. offers healthy meals every school day.

Free/Reduced Meals To receive free or reduced priced meals in the 2010/2011 school year, your child/children must have a new application on file in our office. These children may then qualify for other district benefits. It is important that all students in the household are listed on the application even though they may choose not to participate in the program. The reason it is important is as follows: The State of Texas provides compensatory education funding to school districts based on the number of students approved for free and reduced meals. Therefore, every student must be counted in order to receive maximum funding for the district. Please call (281) 634-1855 or (281) 634-1196 if you have any questions regarding the program or view these frequently asked questions.

Organization, Team and Department NewsBand Gears Up for Marching Season Welcome to the 2010 William B. Travis Tiger Band Marching Season! It’s that time again, and we are excited to welcome so many new faces to the program and to welcome our returning friends back for another great year. We have some exciting things planned for this year including competing for the first time on a national level in St. Louis, MO for the Bands of America Super Regional in the Edward Jones Dome. The Travis Band will also be making a return to San Antonio for the Bands of America Super Regional performance in the Alamodome. 2010 marks the year for a chance to compete for the UIL 5A Texas State Marching Championships that only occurs every other year. This year’s production is entitled Legend of the Pharaoh, depicting an exciting journey through historical Egypt. We have had a very successful pre-season camp and we are off and running for what is to be the greatest season yet! Our color guard, drum line, and wind players have set the bar with a very strong leadership team of students who are the best of the best, standing by their motto of “Dedication, Energy, Excellence, Success, and Honor.” Things may change from year to year, but one thing’s always the same...William B. Travis High School Band is a first-class organization with the best members, parents, and supporters around. Let’ s get started!

FFA Meeting Set The first FFA Booster club meeting will be Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. in the Ag Department.

Model UN Model United Nations is starting its third year at Travis High School. We will be tackling the tough international problems of the world today. Last year our ICJ team won its case, even with first year members. Be part of the fun this

year at 7am every Wednesday in room L236. Freshmen through seniors are invited to join. See Mr. Lyons in L236 for more information.

Debate Team Over the summer our school’s first two National Forensic League national qualifiers traveled to Kansas City, Missouri for the national competition. The students were seniors (2010-2011) Nikita Kansra and Sandhya Thiyagarajan. Nikita competed in United States Extemporaneous Speaking and Sandhya competed in Student Congress.

Cheerleaders Selling Briskets Cheerleaders are selling smoked briskets as a fundraiser to go to Florida for national competition. They will be delivered Sept. 4 in time for Labor Day. Email [email protected] for more information. Junior cheer clinic will be Oct. 2 from 8 a.m.-1.p.m. The purpose is to learn cheers to perform at the THS football game that night. There is a $25 pre-registration fee. Oct. 8 is spirit night at Chick-Fil-A on the corner of Hwy 59 and Hwy 99. A pep rally for the game against Austin HS. starts at 6:30 p.m. The community is invited.

UIL Academics Travis is proud to announce two state UIL winners. Jose Ayala captured the 4th place medal in Accounting, This is Jose’s second time to represent Travis High School at the University of Texas. Parth Upadhyay captured two medals at state--one gold and one silver. Parth received the first place medal in Computer Science and the second place medal in Computer Applications. Parth has also been a state competitor two times for Travis. Jose also received the Outstanding Business Student Award this year and Parth was named Salutatorian of Travis High School. These two outstanding young men have bright futures ahead

of them. Their competitive spirit and dedication are representative of the UIL Academic Program at Travis High School. Jose was coached by Accounting teacher, Pam Dishberger. Parth Upadhyay was coached by Computer Science Instructor, Michael Thom and Business Information Management Instructor, Donna Nowlin. There is a place for every student in UIL Academics. UIL Academics represents English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Business, Journalism, Speech and Debate, and One Act Play. We are excited about the new school year and hope that your student will compete with us all the way to State.

Chess Club Travis Chess Club will be back again this year. The club is open to any student, regardless of experience. We will be offering instruction, strategy, and other lessons on the ancient and noble game of chess. We are hoping to win back the FBISD Chess Title from Elkins this year, so we will be looking for players of all skill levels. The meeting day and times will be determined a few weeks after school starts to make sure we don’t conflict with too many other after-school activities. An important change from last year that is affecting all clubs is the lack of a “5 o’clock” bus this year, so all students will need to provide their own transportation after meetings. The dues will be $5 this year to offset the costs of gear, instructional materials, and tournament expenses. If interested, please see Mr. Householder in room P223.

Business Department The Business Department would like to welcome all new and returning students to our classes. We have several new exciting courses for our students. Some new courses include: Principles of Business, Marketing, and Finance,

Touch Data Entry, Business Information Management, Business Practicum, Human Resource Management, Advertising, and Pre-AP Computer Science. The TEKS have been revised to provide even more opportunities for rigor, relevance, and career opportunities. All business courses are divided into career clusters. We look forward to providing opportunities for OSHA and MOS industry recognized certifications to our students as well as opportunities to participate in DECA, BPA, and UIL competitions.

Math Department We are looking forward to meeting all our incoming freshmen and new students as well as welcoming back our current Travis Tigers. The math department welcomes Mr. Samuel Banjo to our department. Mr. Banjo will be teaching Geometry and Algebra 2 this year. Parents, we encourage you to introduce yourselves early to your child’s teachers. We want to be accessible for you and your children. Not only do we plan to challenge them to learn many new math concepts, we plan to be available to them as they practice new skills and grow to own these concepts. We will offer small group tutorials and should have each team represented Monday – Thursday mornings. You can expect a detailed syllabus unique to your child’s course and teacher during the first week of school. This will include a course overview as well as the teacher’s expectations, procedures, and contact information. You can also expect to find details and unit plans for students available on the teacher websites. Again we look forward to meeting you and making this a very successful year for your child.

Marine Corps JROTC By way of introduction, my name is Lieutenant Colonel Charles Bagnato and I am honored to be selected as the Marine Corps JROTC instructor at Travis High School. Our other Military Instructor, Master Sergeant Rick Bergan, is now aboard and will be standing up this unit with me. Between us, we have over 57 years of service to our country and have worked together in the Fleet Marine Force before. Travis High School has a tradition of success and excellence and we will continue that spirit in this program. I would like to let all the teachers, parents and Cadets know that I encourage everyone to participate in the educational opportunities that this program will bring to the school. It is Our Program! I also want to be perfectly clear, we are not a recruiting organization nor is there any obligation to enter the military. We will certainly share our experiences in the Marine Corps, but will not in any way try to recruit. We will instill a sense of responsibility within the individual Cadet. We will develop leadership, self confidence and discipline as well as citizenship in this program. We will practice marksmanship and develop strength and endurance through our physical fitness program among other things. Any boy or girl in 9th through 12th grade is eligible to join. There are currently 72 Students registered for this program as of now. I am certain that we will have more join after the first two weeks of school. We have already had one week of summer “Boot Camp” and participated in Freshman Orientation “Tiger Camp” on the 13th of August. I will look forward to starting this year and having the program become an integral part of the Travis Team.

Senior Class of 2011 Welcome Back Seniors! I am looking forward to working with you throughout the year as your class sponsor. We have many fundraisers planned this year so we can raise money for prom and also for senior week. Some of the fundraisers that we are planning for this year are: Personalized Senior Parking Spots in August and September, a Senior Calendar in October, Powder Puff in March, and the 3rd Annual Travis Idol in April. Prom this year will be held on May 14, 2011. It will be held at the Westin in Memorial City. The theme of this year’s prom will be Moulin Rouge. Yearbook Congratulatory Ad Deadline Approaching

Congratulatory ads for seniors and other students are an important part of the year-end celebration that accompanies yearbook distribution. The Travis Media Team offers ad space in several sizes so that parents can choose the size that fits their budgets. Full page ads are $350; half page ads are $260; quarter page ads are $150 and eighth-page ads are $85. The ads are full color and parents can submit the pictures they wish to use along with a message of congratulations for their students. For the 2011 yearbook, the deadline for receipt of ad requests will be Oct. 15, 2010. (We extended the deadline one month from what was announced in May to give parents more time. This is an earlier deadline than in previous years but is necessary to have enough pages ready to submit to Taylor Publishing Co. by the November deadline. We also welcome advertising from area businesses. Prices and sizes are the same. Advertising purchasers can design their own ads and submit camera-ready, or the journalism students can design it for you at no charge. Congratulatory ads can be purchased until Oct. 15 through Smart-Pay when a book is also ordered, or can be purchased through the journalism department. Business ads can be purchased through the journalism department at Travis High School. All copy and high resolution photos (on a CD) must be received by the journalism department by Oct. 15. Please DO NOT embed photos in a Microsoft Word document. Please use the following order form to reserve your space. Mail or deliver this with a CD containing the digital photos (300 dpi or higher resolution) and your payment to: Journalism Department Travis High School, 11111 Harlem Road, Richmond, TX 77469

Smart-Pay Open for Yearbook Orders The 2011 yearbooks are now available for purchase from www.smart-pay.com, the automated ordering system for Taylor Publishing Co. “You will get a letter from Taylor about purchasing the books in September, but you can go ahead and order early to avoid the rush,” Dianne Smith-Harper, Travis Media Team adviser, said. The books will remain the same in price as last year, $77, she said. “Smart-Pay will close sales about the middle of January, so you need to make sure you order before then,” she said. “We have to make sure we can pay for the books that we order, so we don’t ever order a whole lot more than what have been ordered through Smart-Pay. If we do have any to sell when books come in, they will be $90 cash.” “We have some special extras we are hoping to incorporate into the book this year,” Smith-Harper said. “Look for announcements about how your student can order a special supplement that is all about him or her. This is a really cool way to personalize your yearbook.”

Seniors Need to Have Portraits Made Now If your senior has not had a yearbook portrait made by Prestige Studio, this needs to be taken care of immediately so that the Travis Media Team will have it in time to put into the 2011 yearbook. “We gave the Senior Class information about this at an assembly the last week of school,” Dianne Smith-Harper, Travis Media Team adviser, said. “Prestige also sent out appointment cards over the summer to each senior.” If the appointment card was misplaced or not received or if the appointment was missed, it is urgent that a new appointment be made as soon as possible, she said. “We need to have those portraits in our hands by mid-October to be able to meet deadlines,” she said. “Students who have not had their portraits made may not be in the yearbook. We really want everyone in the book.” The number to Prestige Studio is 281-492-9361.

Athlete Insurance In the past, Fort Bend ISD has purchased a blanket accident only policy for athletes. That coverage will not be provided this year. However, the District is making an affordable accident only plan available through a Voluntary Student Accident Program. This program gives parents the opportunity to purchase Accident Only Insurance that is effective on the day after enrollment premium has been received by the company and terminates in one year from effective date. There are three (3) programs from which you can choose. One is an At-School accident only insurance program; another is a 24-Hour accident only insurance program and the third is a Varsity Football (Grades 10-12 Fall and Spring) accident only voluntary policy. To enroll your child, you may request an Enrollment Brochure from the Athletic Trainer or the school office, go online to enroll by using the web site www.TexasKidsFirst.com, or you may call 800-366-8354 for an application.
