To all our students who have competed at Zone, or are about to compete at Zone level, we send you our best wishes for success. Of course the success of our students is also because of the wonderful support from our families, which is very much appreciated. We currently have a counsellor, Mrs Marjory Gray, five days a term. If you would like your child to receive some assistance from Mrs Gray, please collect a referral form from the office and return it to the office. We then send these forms to Mrs Gray so that assistance can be organised as soon as possible. The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme are currently taking applications from Australians aged 16-23 to join a voyage on the national sail training ship, Young Endeavour. Each voyage is of eleven days where as members of the crew they will keep watch and take the helm, handle lines on deck, cook in the galley, navigate using the ship’s charts, and climb the 30 metre mast to set and furl the sails. This is an exciting experience and a unique opportunity for our youth to develop skills for life. Applications are open at www.youngendeavour.gov.au. Please see the web site for more information about this wonderful opportunity. Attendance If your child is away, please ensure you inform the school on the day your child is away so that we know where your child is and that they are safe. Please find attached to this newsletter some templates that parents/carers can utilise for explaining their child/children’s absence. Term Calendar Please find enclosed our Term 1 calendar of events for this term. Mrs Gillian Davis Principal SECONDARY NEWS Secondary students have made a settled start to their education this year. It’s been wonderful to welcome our new Year 7 students into our secondary department - you have all been a welcome addition to our school. Heat and Hygiene It has obviously been a very hot few weeks - with some school days reaching over 35 degrees. During this time, students have been encouraged to drink plenty of water and stay out of the sun. Some implications that we’ve found are that a number of students are wearing jumpers all day, despite the heat, which could be of detriment to their health. Personal hygiene has also been an issue. Students have been reminded the importance of wearing clean clothes, washing and applying deodorant each and every day. I understand that water is a very precious commodity at the moment - so at the school we can offer students the option to wash clothes and shower (after consultation with parents) please keep this in mind. Students have been asked to bring roll on deodorant to school to apply during the school day. Spray deodorant is banned due to the health and breathing concerns that it can cause students and staff.

Student Diaries Last week, all secondary students were given a student diary. They are strongly encouraged to take their diary to each lesson and record assessments and homework. Please discuss this with your child and ask them to check their diary for any reminders each evening. Special School Programs This year in the secondary, we are running additional school programs that are targeted at helping to make our students, well-rounded, resilient and confident members of society. Some students are participating in the Rock and Water program, run by Mr Davis and Mrs Sullivan every week to develop a better self-awareness and their resilience. All students in Year 7-10 are participating in a drama-based program that I am teaching to assist in confidence building and the development of public speaking skills. I’ve included a photo of my 7/8 class working incredibly well as team last week. Permission to Publish A gentle reminder to parents that if you give permission to publish your child’s photo, can you please ensure that you have returned the note to the school. Publishing photos (where possible) helps us to celebrate student work and their great achievements. Miss Rebecca Grant Head Teacher- Secondary Studies

PRIMARY NEWS Lost Property! There are a number of items already accruing in primary that do not have names. Please remember to label all of your child’s belongings including clothing, lunch boxes, containers, drink bottles, hats, etc. All unlabelled and unclaimed lost property will be washed each Friday and placed into the clothing pool at the front office. Explaining Absences! Absences are recorded by the classroom teacher and monitored by the school and the Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO). When writing a note after your child has been absent or when signing the late book, it is important to explain the reason for the absence. Attendance at school every day will ensure your child receives the best possible chance of increasing their education.
