TM 9-8011-2PART ONEGENERALSection IINTRODUCTION1. SCOPE.a. These instructions are published for the information andguidance of the personnel to whom this equipment is assigned. Theycontain information on the operation and maintenance of the Truck,2 Vi-Ton, 6x6, CMC CCKW-352 "and 353, as well as descriptions ofthe major units and their functions in relation to the other com-ponentsof this vehicle.b. This manual has the following arrangement:(1) Part One, General, contains description and data. It liststhe tools, spare parts, and equipment carried on the vehicle. It alsolists organizational special tools for this vehicle.(2) Part Two, Operating Instructions, contains instructions forthe operation of the vehicle with description and location of thecontrols and instruments.(3) Part Three, Maintenance Instructions, contains informa-tionneeded for the performance of the scheduled lubrication andpreventive maintenance services, and instructions for maintenanceoperations which are the responsibility of the using organizations(first and second echelons). Stock numbers in this part were ob-tainedfrom the Organizational Spare Parts and Equipment List ofSNL G-5Q8, 29 December 1943.(4) The Appendix contains instructions for shipment and tem-porarystorage, and a list of references including standard nomen-claturelists, technical manuals, and other publications applicableto the vehicle.2. RECORDS.a. Forms and records applicable for use in performing pre-scribedoperations are listed below with brief explanations of each.(1) STANDARD FORM No. 26, DRIVER'S REPORTACCIDENT,MOTOR TRANSPORTATION. One copy of this form will be kept withthe vehicle at all times. Minor repairs, parts, and accessory replacements will notbe recorded.(4) W.D., A.G.O. FORM No. 6, DUTY ROSTER. This form, slightlymodified, will be used for scheduling and maintaining a record of ve-hiclemaintenance operations. It may be used for lubrication records.(5) W.D., A.G.O. FORM No. 461, PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCESERVICE AND TECHNICAL INSPECTION WORK SHEET FOR WHEELEDAND HALF-TRACK VEHICLES. This form will be used for all 1,000-mile (monthly) and 6,000-mile (semi-annual) maintenance servicesand all technical inspections performed on wheeled or half-trackvehicles.(6) W.D., O.O. FORM No. 7353, SPOT-CHECK INSPECTION RE-PORTFOR ALL MOTOR VEHICLES. This form may be used by allcommanding officers or their staff representatives in making spot-checkinspection on all vehicles.(7) W.D., A.G.O. FORM No. 468, UNSATISFACTORY EQUIPMENTRECORD. This form will be used for reporting manufacturing, design,or operational defects in material with a view to improving andcorrecting such defects, and for use in recommending modificationsof material. This form will not be used for reporting failures, isolatedmaterial defects, or malfunctions of material resulting from fairwear and tear or accidental damage, nor for the replacement, repair,or the issue of parts and equipment. It does not replace currentlyauthorized operational or performance records.(8) W.D., O.O. FORM No. 7370, EXCHANGE PART OR UNITIDENTIFICATION TAG. Conventionalaccessories such as generator, cranking motor, distributor, oil filter,carbureter, air cleaner, clutch, etc., are attached to engine proper.Transmission, mounted to rear end of engine, has five speeds forwardand one reverse, with direct drive in fourth speed and over-drive infifth. Clutch is single dry-plate type attached directly to flywheel.(2) AXLES, SUSPENSION, AND STEERING. Three driving axlesare full-floating and may be either split or banjo type. Front axle in-corporatesspecial universal joints at the steering knuckles whichpermit steering of vehicle in conventional automotive manner. Sus-pensionof axles from chassis frame is with semi-elliptic springs, withtorque rod connections used at rear axles. Each front spring is at-tachedto conventional two-channel type frame by a shackle at frontend, and a bracket at rear end. Each rear spring is supported at thecenter on cross shaft bearings. Ends of rear springs are fitted intoguides at wheel ends of rear axles.(3) BRAKES. Service brakes are vacuum operated hydraulictype, operating two mechanical brake shoes at each wheel. Hydraulicmaster cylinder, operated by foot brake pedal, actuates Hydrovacpower cylinder, which in turn transmits hydraulic pressure to wheelcylinders to apply brakes. Band type hand brake assembly is mount-edon output shaft at rear of transfer case. Conventional latch typehand brake lever operates brake through rods and linkage for emer-gencystops, or to hold vehicle while parking.(4) POWER DRIVE UNITS. Two-speed transfer case permits driveby rear axles, or front and rear axles, depending upon position ofmanual shift levers. Axles are driven through conventional typepropeller shafts from transfer case. Power take-off for winch andhoist operation (when used) is mounted on left side of transmission,and drives these auxiliary units through universal joint type driveshafts.(5) WINCH. The winch, when supplied, is mounted at front endof vehicle, and is driven through drive shaft by transmission powertake-off.(6) CAB. The two-man cab consists of a metal open top en-closurearound driver's compartment. Wood type cargo body, equipped withtroop seats, cargo racks, bows, and top tarpaulin, may be mountedon either long wheelbase (CCKW-353) or short wheelbase (CCKW-352) chassis.(b) Cargo Dump (fig. 3). Metal type cargo dump body, equippedwith troop seats, cargo racks, bows, and top tarpaulin, is mountedonly on long wheelbase (CCKW-353) chassis with winch. Hydraulichoist, mounted on subframe, raises body to dumping position.(c) Gasoline Tank Body (fig. 4). Metal gasoline tank body, con-sistingof two 375 gallon tanks, is mounted only on long wheelbase(CCKW-353) chassis. Tank is equipped with dump valves and 11.
