HOME & LIVING

If home is where the heart is, then having a peaceful and safe home means your heart is calm and at ease.

But with crime the number one local news item, many of us fi nd that peace compromised. A sound in the yard too late at night might keep us on alert all night, and even into the week. The Muslim Link spoke to a local Muslim security expert who has designed and implemented home and commercial security systems for over a decade. He wished to remain anonymous, but here’s his “top 10” list of things to think about when planning for your peaceful home.

1.Make sure you use only licensed vendors. Most state and local police departments require licensed vendors to install security systems. In Virginia , contact the DCJS – Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), and in Maryland , contact the Maryland State Police.

2.When looking at the costs for your security system package, make sure to include any additional devices that may be needed. Usually the monitoring service fees are fi xed, but the costs of replacement parts, service warranties, and service agreements are not. Consider them in your evaluation!

3.If you are planning your new home, its best to have it pre-wired for security. You can install the system at a later date. Some home fi nancing plans can work the wiring costs into

the fi nancing agreement.

4.Choosing between Wired and Wireless systems can be somewhat tricky. Both systems provide good reliability, but the wireless type requires more maintenance (changing of batteries every 1-2yrs). The two main advantages of going wireless are for easier installations and no need for ugly wires.

5.Door and window alarms sensors are better than motion sensors in most cases. You want your alarms to go off when the criminal is on the outside of your house. Installing sensors on individual doors and windows will sound the alarm when these are jarred or broken; while motion sensors will only go off when the criminal is inside the home. You want to keep the bad guys out!

6.When there are budget constraints, do a night-time walk around of your home, looking for the most vulnerable places where someone could enter - low reaching windows, doors, sliding doors, hatches, etc. Those are the places you want to alarm for sure.

7.Make sure to get enough signage to cover all possible entry points into your home. A “Protected By ABC, Inc” sticker on a window or door is a deterrent for a thief.

8.For extra safety, add smoke and carbon monoxide detection to your alarm system, these allow for the auto-notify the EMS and

fi re departments. Also some rental companies and home insurance companies will give you a discount if you have a monitor alarm.

9.You can save money on service calls if you learn and understand some basic things about your system. At your user training, take care and ask the installation technician how to change your batteries.

10.Use your investment! All home security system have ‘at home’ and ‘away from home’ modes. There should be no excuses for not arming your system day and night.

And last but certainly not least, make sure you fill your home with prayer and the remembrance of Allah in word and deed, because Allah is the Protector of those who believe!

When it comes to food, some things just seem right, but what happens if you go in and start breaking the mental rules? I decided to go against my own personal grain this month and ended up with an exciting new twist on an old favorite.

As you know, I am trying to get everyone to eat more fruit, vegetables and consequently… fi ber. Along those lines, I have been trying to incorporate less starch at every meal. The fi rst recipe is a family favorite that goes great over some hot jasmine rice, but if you are willing to be adventurous, serve it up on some endive leaves instead. Endive is slightly bitter and goes well with the spice of the ground beef and it packs almost 2 grams of fi ber per serving. Plus, kids really enjoy eating foods that look like they are meant for tiny fi ngers.

Spicy Ground Beef Endive ScoopsPrep time: 5 minutes Total time: 20 minutes. Serves 4

1 pound ground beef1 large onion, chopped1 8 ounce can tomato sauce½ cup light coconut milk1 ½ teaspoon red curry paste1 4 ounce can green chili peppers, minced1 teaspoon brown sugar½ cup green onions, chopped2 teaspoons vegetable oil4 whole endive or ½ head of iceberg lettuce

Add oil to frying pan and heat to medium. Sauté onions until translucent. Add ground beef and chop into small pieces with a spatula as it cooks. Remove any excess fat from the beef and stir in tomato sauce. Cook for about 5 minutes or until sauce reduces and thickens slightly. Add the next 4 ingredients (coconut milk to brown sugar) and simmer for 5-10 minutes to allow the fl avors to combine. Before serving stir in green onions. Cut the ends off each endive, wash and dry them. Remove individual endive leaves and fi ll each scoop with 1-2 tablespoons of beef mixture or serve family style with beef in the middle of the plate and endive leaves around the outside for scooping. If you don’t like endive or can’t fi nd them in the store, wash and dry half a head of iceberg lettuce and use individual leaves to make lettuce wraps.

If there is one thing my mother taught me well, it is that you don’t chop up a good cut of meat. For me, that extended to large fi sh fi llets as well. In the next recipe, I traded the canned pink salmon for a salmon fi llet and couldn’t believe the difference in texture and fl avor. If you couple the salmon burger with a good multigrain muffi n (up to 8 grams of fi ber per serving) and the tang of plain yogurt, you have just assembled a quick and easy crowd pleaser. Dill goes well with this recipe. Stir in a little dill with your yogurt and serve on top for some extra zip.

* * *Salmon BurgersPrep time: 5 minutes Total time: 20 minutesServes 4

1 pound salmon fi llet (or canned pink salmon)½ cup seasoned bread crumbs½ cup green onions, chopped4 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 tablespoon jarred garlic)1 tablespoon country dijon mustard1 tablespoon dry parsley1 egg½ teaspoon salt¼ teaspoon black pepper (may increase up to 1 teaspoon as desired)

4 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt (optional)

½ teaspoon dill (optional)4 multigrain English muffi ns (optional)

Cut skinless salmon fi llet into 1 inch chunks and grind in a food processor. If you are using canned pink salmon, remove all of the bones and skin. In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients until well incorporated. Press salmon into 4 patties. Use cooking spray to coat frying pan and heat to medium. Add salmon patties to pan and cook 3-4 minutes on each side. Do not overcook. Serve on toasted multigrain English muffi ns with a tablespoon of plain Greek yogurt.

I was walking through the store recently and stopped in front of the 8 foot display of granola bars, snack bars, fruit snacks and fruit roll-ups. I started to riffl e through the ingredients and I couldn’t fi nd one bar that passed the test. The fi rst round of testing excluded everything with high fructose corn syrup. The second round of testing was ingredient preferences. I left the store granola bar-less and feeling dejected. Then it occurred to me that maybe I could make granola bars. The following recipe is a good foundation recipe. You can substitute the fruit and nut selections (almonds, pecans, cherries and chocolate) with your own favorite blend. This blend has almost 5 grams of fi ber per bar.

* * *Grown-up Granola BarsPrep time: 10 minutes Total time: 30 minutesMakes 16 bars

1 tablespoon butter2 ½ cups rolled oats 1 cup brown rice syrup½ cup almonds, whole½ cup pecans, chopped¾ cup dried tart cherries, chopped½ cup mini semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips¼ cup unsweetened shredded coconut2 teaspoons vanilla extract ¼ cup cane sugar (or brown sugar)½ teaspoon sea salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Put a layer of foil in the bottom of an 8x8 inch pan. The foil should hang over the edge of the pan about an inch. Grease the foil with butter.

Place nuts and coconut on an edged cookie sheet and bake for 6 minutes, or until coconut is golden. Use a spatula to turn nuts and coconut every 2 minutes while it is toasting. In a large mixing bowl, combine nuts, coconut, oats and dried cherries, set aside. In a saucepan, combine rice syrup, sugar, and salt over medium heat. Stir constantly until it comes to a boil. Continue to stir until mixture thickens slightly. Stir in vanilla and

pour over the oat, fruit and nut mixture. Use a spatula to mix until incorporated. Spray hands with cooking spray and press mixture into prepared pan. Once the bars have cooled completely, sprinkle the chocolate chips on the top and press them in gently.journey a little easier by making most every sauce and paste available for you to create your own new and exciting fl avor combinations. ----------------------------------------------------

If a person had a stream outside his door and he bathed in it fi ve times a day, do you think he would have any fi lth left on him?” The people said, “No fi lth would remain on him whatsoever.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) then said, “That is like the fi ve daily prayers: Allah wipes away the sins by them.”

Every Muslim has read that the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam told his ummah about the wonderful nature of honey. In the Qur’an in Surah An-Nahl, Allah described honey as a “drink of varying color wherein is healing for men”.

Its no wonder that scientists are spending more and more resources examining, testing, and developing honey-based medical treatments. As early as December 26, 2007, the Associated Press ran a story titled “Honey makes medical comeback”.

One company that has believed in the restorative power of honey for a long time is HoneyDerm, Inc., a Lansing, Michigan based company that spent years bringing the healing power of honey to people suffering from hair loss, dandruff, and skin disease.

Their most famous product line is Hairback Lotion and Hairtonix Shampoo, that “helps stimulate new hair growth and thicken existing hair”. Honeyderm, Inc also claims the products solve dandruff and scalp psoriasis.

The Muslim Link requested access to some of Honeyderm’s customers, and Brother Mahmoud from Honeyderm gladly offered us some phone numbers.

Brother Hasan, in his late 30’s is from Maryland and suffers from the common skin disease eczema. “I’ve had eczema since high school, and it got worse as the years went on. I went to a dermatologist and he recommended a cortisone-type prescription cream. It did stop the itch, but my skin was still dry and tight. I’ve tried lotions and shampoos from Aveeno, Lubiderm, Vaseline, and others. Alhumdulillah, I found Honeyderm’s Dermatonic-P, and it is really, really a blessing for people with Eczema or other skin illnesses. I no longer wake up sweating at night! Allahu-Akbar!.”

We called Abdurihman Khalil from Chicago. He did not know we were going to call. Abdurihman started

losing his hair when he was about 28. He discovered the Hairback product line at a convention and decided to test its claims. “The hair loss stopped completely,” said Abdurihman. “It’s excellent, and I’ve been using it now for 6 years as my normal shampoo ... I recommend it to be friends and family always.”

We also called Brother Mustafa Al-Omary in Sterling Heights, Michigan. He decided to do something about his thinning hair at age 40 and tried the Hairback treatment. Asked how long it took for him to see results, he told us “Oh gosh, less than a week. My thin spots fi lled in,.” He said he would “absolutely” recommend the product to anyone. “It’s not a fl y-by-night product, its awesome,” said Mustafa.

We also called Najeebudheen Appat, a 30-year old living in Los Angeles, CA. He’s had a severe dandruff problem for a long-time, and had been searching for a solution. “I tried so many different products like tonics and shampoos, I can’t even remember them all, until I found this product around 2002. My problem was solved completely, the entire thing is taken care of. I even called [Honeyderm] with the great feedback,” recalled Najeebudheen. He told us that Allah creates shifa in many things, and Honeyderm’s products are a part of that. “For dandruff problems, this is the total solution,” he told us from his mobile phone.

On Honeyderm’s website, there are many more testimonials from Muslims and non-Muslims from around the nation and the world. There is also a gallery of “before and after” pictures of both hair loss treatments as well as skin treatments. And best of all, for those of us who’ve “tried it all”, there is a full money back guarantee.

Allah said honey heals. The Prophet Sallallahu’alyhi wa sallam said honey heals. The people we called said honey heals. With a money back guarantee, there is absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to gain – your hair and skin!
