Day 2 - Close Reading Analyzing Author’s Craft
I Can... I can describe how illustrations contribute to our understanding of the text.
Common Core Standards
RI7:Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.
Before Analysis Yesterday friends we read our book about Mario Molina and learned a lot about his life and accomplishments. You also may have noticed how detailed many of the illustrations were in the story. Today we’re going to go back and look at some of these illustrations and see how they add to the text.
Analysis Close Reading: Reread the story. Stop on the pages indicated in the anchor chart and prompt:*note gradual release of responsibility* What do we learn about Mario and his story from this illustration? In this illustration, we learn___
Anchor Chart (prepare before analysis and co-construct with students) **these are just some selections, there are many other options to choose** Page/Illustration Meaning
“Feliz cumpleaños,
Mario!...
I DO We see how Mario received a microscope for his birthday and how he wasn’t interested in the party games like the other
children or the toys or cake
“Mario carefully mixed…”
WE DO (We see how Mario grew up studying chemistry, he was interested in what happened when mixing, heating and observing
chemicals; he never got bored of chemistry)
“In the upper atmosphere…”
WE DO (We see how sprays can destroy the atmosphere step by step: CFCs go into the atmosphere, solar radiation breaks off
chlorine, the chlorine breaks up the ozone)
“For more than ten years…”
YOU DO (We see how Mario ignored the criticism and kept working to
show the world that he was right)
