FAREWELL FROM OUR PAST CHAIRMANIt is certainly bittersweet as I approach the end of my term on the Board. Adrian and I arelooking forward to spending time in our new home in the Berkshires during the summer season.

However, I certainly have enjoyed my tenure on the Board and especially being Chairmanfor this year. I have met many members and have enjoyed talking to everyone.

The Board has not accomplished everything we wanted, but we certainly can be proud ofthe last two years.

The Board has become more transparent because of the posting of Board Committee meeting minutes, the WeeklyBoard Message and the monthly informal meetings.

We are still a very socially active Club having more social activities in a week than most clubs have in a month. Arelationship with FAU has been established so that various programs are now being presented at our Club. This programwill only be expanded every year.

Where money was available facilities have been improved including both pools, a new Center Court awning, newtennis lights, and various improvements in the kitchen and dining rooms. Upgrading the Athletics Center lobby and partsof Center Court are being planned.

An Ambassador program has been established specifically for new residents moving into our community to createinterests in their joining the Club.

An Ad-hoc Marketing Committee was established to help create and to market programs to make our Club moreattractive to future members.

We certainly did not accomplish all our goals, but we can be satisfied with those that were fulfilled. One area that definitely needs improvement is attracting members to run for the Board of Governors. We are a

volunteer organization and our success depends on those who get involved. We no longer have the luxury to depend onothers to work for our Club.

I have complete faith in our new Board and Chairman – and wish them all success during these very difficult times, and I am looking forward to contributing whenever I can.My best wishes to you all.

Barry Oster, Ex-Officio

WELCOME FROM OUR NEW CHAIRMANI want to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks, on behalf of the Board of Governors, for the service rendered to our Club by Barry Oster and Aggie Winthrop. I also want to congratulatethose new members and incumbents who chose to run this year. There are many intelligent, creative and experienced members in Boca Pointe who have life experiences that can help guideour future and I would ask those of you who have the ability to volunteer to run for the Boardof Governors and serve on our various committees.

The Board of Governors and Club management will be facing some difficult times in the months to come. The mostarduous task will be preparing the budget for the year 2009-2010. Our declining membership will undoubtedly result inreduced revenues. It is for this reason that the Board sought your approval for the By-Law change that granted us theability to study and then offer membership categories in addition to those customarily offered by the Club.

I believe that the lines of communication between the Board, management and the members have improved duringthe past year. We promised, and we delivered, more transparency and will continue to do all that is necessary to ensurethat this continues. The Board has had numerous informal meetings with members; arranged for focus groups whenserious issues were being proposed; and strove to educate ourselves and our members regarding trends in the country clubindustry, demographics and economic changes that impact our future.

I also want to commend our General Manager, Paul Volin, for the efforts made during the past few months to definefor our members the need to re-evaluate our business model in light of the economic

JUNEGood Carbss from Iron Mike: An Apple aDay for hhealth and bodybuilding success. Most of us have a vague notion of the healthbenefits of apples. They’re supposed to keepdoctors away, right? Aside from brimmingwith vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, one apple gives you a whopping five gramsof fiber and only about 80 calories. Studieshave shown that eating apples regularly canreduce your chances of developingcardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.

Apples may also help preserve brainfunction. When old rats were given apples or apple juice, their performance in mazenavigation improved significantly. Specificantioxidants in the fruit contribute to thebrain building effects.

Most of an apple’s antioxidants, suchas quercetin, are in the peel. A lot of thefiber is there too, which is a big part of thereason it’s a low-glycemic-index fruit. Apples, however, may be good for more than justyour health.

According to a study in Medicine &Science in Sports & Exercise, rats got almosta 100% increase in gastorcnemius-musclestrength when given apple polyphenois.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF CADDIEIn most cases when you hear the word“Caddie” at a country club, it refersto a person who assists agolfer during a round ofgolf, suggesting whatclub to use at a certaindistance, and how fastand what direction aputt will break.

On February 5, 2009 Boca Pointe golfers got an assistfrom a different kind of “Caddy”. That was the date of our annual Men’s Member/Guest golf tournament. Everyyear this event is one of the highlights of our season, andthis year because of the generosity of our local Cadillacdealership, Coral Cadillac, the day will long be remembered.

Over a year ago, when we first contacted Coral aboutthe possibility of sponsoring our Member/Guest, we weretold to contact them a few months prior to the tournamentdate. Little did we know that the economy would be insuch dire straights, we assumed that there was the possibilitythat any automobile dealership would have to tighten their“fan belts”, and due to financial restraints turn down theirsponsorship of our event. However, Coral Cadillac steppedup to the plate and gave us the whole nine yards. Theyprovided us with a 2009 Cadillac STS for our hole-in-onecontest, 36 dozen golf balls and many other prizes for thewinners of the tournament and skill events. So “down theroad”, when you are looking for a new car and you want tobuy “American”, visit our friendly neighbor, Coral Cadillacand tell them you’re from Boca Pointe. They are located at5101 North Federal Highway, Pompano Beach, Florida.

challenges we are facing. There will be changes made this year that will improve our income. The Board will be re-evaluating guest policies

that have been counter-productive, especially as these policies have prohibited our members from inviting their BocaPointe neighbors to use our facilities. The Board will do everything in its power to introduce our Club to the non-memberresidents in Boca Pointe through the Ambassador program.

I look forward to the many challenges we will face and thank my fellow Board members for their confidence andsupport.

Many of you have heard and even seen a performance ofour new “Boca Pointe Country Club Performing ScamTroupe” but where did this come from, and what is itactually accomplishing?

Harriet Rubin, a club member since 2001 started thetroupe last July after reading an article in the Sun Sentineldetailing the high number of seniors in Palm Beach Countywho had been “scammed” out of money by being offereddeals sounding “too good to be true”.

Harriet had been a member of an acting group inBergen County, NJ about 10 years ago, and the groupperformed the very same scams she read about in thesentinel. The NJ group had an affiliation with the BergenCounty. Police Dept. So Harriet called the Palm Beachsheriffs office to see if this law enforcement agency wouldbe interested in working with a group if one could beestablished. The response was very encouraging, so shecontacted the BPCC Board and was given the go-ahead tostart a group. An announcement in the weekly and aninitial casting call resulted in 8 members who were interested.Harriet had written 4 skits and rehearsals began. In orderto find places to perform, she contacted activities directorsat all the nearby independent living facilities, and began toschedule performances. The first was at Edgewater Estateson August 8th, 2008. Marci Shatzman, who writes for thesentinel about adult communities was very interested anddid a feature on the new group in August and this resulted A

in several communities calling to book performances.A notice for additional actors resulted in the group

growing to 14 members. The troupe performed at the club on March 5th and

2 performances had to be scheduled to accommodate over350 members.

The relationship with the PBCSO, BCSO, and theBoca Raton police have made a great impact on the audiences, since a deputy always appears following the show to answerquestions. As of mid March, over 35 shows will have beenscheduled and performed.

The cast members decided to choose an annualcharity to support, and the Boca Pointe cancer researchunit was designated. A contribution of $1000 is anticipatedthis season.

List of cast members: Lily and Alan Helft, BurtGoodman, Phyllis Linn, Adelle Goodman, Jerry Adelson,Malcolm Gropper, Sandy Porten, Arlene Berkwich, MitziHerrmann, Roberta Pheifer, David Ehrlich, Ed Swell andHarriet Rubin.

Some communities that we have performed at are:Crescent Lakes, Summer Chase, Majestic Isles, Boca Chase,Whisper Walk, Huntington Lakes, Valencia Shores, BrokenSound, Royal Lakes Avalon, Les Jardin, Palm Chase Lakes, the Boynton Beach Democratic Club, the Kings PointDemocratic Club, and many independent livingcommunities.
