Today, Super Bowl Sunday, is a reminder of the strength of individuals, as well as the need for community. Any player, in and of himself, cannot win a game. It takes the unity of many to make that happen. It is only in teamwork — each contributing the best of himself — that a win is possible. The same holds for our own lives. We might be incredibly holy. We might be incredibly talented. We might be incredibly insightful. Those are all well and good. However, God did not bless us with those attributes and graces so that we could go it on our own. God blessed us so that we might rally the team of Christians among whom we live and move together toward the goal: eternal life in His Kingdom.

REFLECTION Stewardship

“...they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord...” L 2:22

How seriously do you take being a catholic? Is “being Catholic” something I just do when I attend Sunday Mass or attend one of my parish functions? It’s easy to be Catholic then, it’s harder to

be Catholic when I am out in the world. Would someone recognize you as a Catholic by the way you act, dress and talk?

How do you present yourself to the Lord and to others?

Presentation of the Lord “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the

sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” Very often, having more light is not something we

desire as it forces us to confront something we really do not want to see. There can be comfort found in darkness. It has an eerie sense of security

to it. We do not have to challenge ourselves or be challenged and can simply exist in some fabricated state of self-fabricated blissfulness. Jesus came to bring light, and it is a light that is resisted by many and hated by some. It is a light that causes us to see things as they really are and not as

we would want or need them to be. It is no wonder then that Simeon boldly and honestly proclaims to Mary, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you yourself a sword will pierce so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” We have to take the Gospel message as it is and not just use those parts that are useful to us or more palatable. Taking Jesus at face value can and will lead to turmoil and dissention. Hearts will be pierced. Whether we like it, Jesus’ proclamation

of what the world God created really ought to look like has real and absolute social implications. It has a lot to say about how we treat our

brothers and sisters: spiritually, personally, economically, and globally. It has everything to do with the poor, the immigrant, the scared, the unborn,

the vulnerable, the sick, and the broken. The light opens us to a challenging, table-turning experience that may not be something we want

to see but shows us where we need to be.. ©LPi

TEAMWORK

“The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.” ~ Phil Jackson

It has taken a lifetime to try to unlearn some of the things that I was taught as a child. My parents were two of the millions who lived throughout the depression. Because of that, they developed a certain standard about living. My father, especially, taught his sons that we had to rely solely on ourselves. We had to do everything necessary by ourselves. It was a weakness to ask anyone else for help.

That’s not the truth, though. Yes, there are things that we need to accomplish. There are things for which we are responsible. However, we do not need to exclude others from our lives. We can certainly ask others for help. As much as we might value individual strength, we also need to value a collective strength.

We are not alone. If we attempt to live alone, we will soon find just how dependent we are upon others. Even the great saints who desired to be alone found that it wasn’t possible. There were some who went into the desert and made hermitages for themselves solely for the purpose of removing themselves from society.

However, their very holiness soon attracted the attention of others and, before they knew it, they had followers. Their intention of being alone was soon replaced with being the center of a community. Their holiness was a bedrock for the communities formed around them. The collective benefited from them and they found themselves benefiting from the community in which they lived.

Today, Super Bowl Sunday, is a reminder of the strength of individuals as well as the need for community.

FAITH ACTION: In all humility, identify your many gifts and then ask God to give you the grace to use them for the benefit of those around you.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A man had two tickets to the Super Bowl. He was so excited and paid the $3,500 for each ticket as soon as they went on sale. There was one thing he forgot to take into consideration, though. He didn't realize that the game would land on the day of his wedding. If you are interested, he is looking for someone to take his place at this most memorable occasion. It will be at St. Francis Church in Des Moines, Iowa at 3:45 p.m. She is 5’7”' and weighs about 145 pounds. She’s a great cook, and will be in the white dress!

OUR NEXT BISHOP On Tuesday, February 11, 2020, Monsignor Robert McClory will be ordained a bishop at Holy Angels Cathedral. At that Ordination Mass, he will also be installed as the Fifth Bishop of the Diocese of Gary. Many of you have asked about the possibility of attending that Mass. The evening prayer the day before and the Ordination are strictly ticket only events.

Because of that, the diocese has contracted with a few groups to make the viewing of evening prayer and Mass available to all. You may watch a live stream of the services on the diocesan web site: www.dcgary.org. On Tuesday, the Ordination Mass will be televised live on EWTN or CatholicTV. Please keep praying for our new bishop, that God may give him all that he needs to shepherd our diocese.

O Lord, who for the feeding of your flock, have chosen your servant, Monsignor Robert McClory, as a successor to the Apostles, grant him, we pray, that as he is ordained to the Order of Bishops he may manifest a spirit of counsel and fortitude, a spirit of knowledge and piety, so that, by faithfully governing the people entrusted to him, he may build up in the world the sacrament of the Church.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry The St. Vincent de Paul Society have so much to be thankful for

as we enter this new decade! It would not be so if not for our very generous parishioners! Your donations, fiscal, material and spiritual have made our work easier. In 2019, we were able to assist 874 adults and children with food donations to sustain them and assistance with utility bills and rent payments. The holidays were busy, as well. We provided 60 food baskets at

Thanksgiving and 53 food baskets at Christmas and were able to provide toys, gloves, hats and scarves to the families picking up their baskets. This would never have been possible without you!

There are a few special groups/individuals we would like to acknowledge. They are the following:

St. Thomas More School Students, for their toy drive providing gifts for children.

Gifts of Love & Warmth Ministry, who donated lovely hand knit gloves, hats and scarves.

Boy Scouts who arose early to assist with basket distribution.

Cafeteria Staff, who accommodated us while sorting toys. Mike Popovich, who assisted us to ensure early morning

deliveries helping us pick-up hams and turkeys both at Thanksgiving and Christmas. And finally,

Munster Donut, who provided donuts and coffee for the volunteers at work. They have generously done this for 20

years! What can we say…..it takes a team!

We have a great team here at St. Thomas More! Thank you for your assistance in making other peoples’ lives

just a little bit easier. This would never have been possible without you!

It takes many hands to make the St. Vincent de Paul Society and our parish Food Pantry operate to serve our community. New

members are always welcomed with open arms. If you would like to join SVDP, or just want to learn more about the work we do, please call Terry at (219) 836-8610.
