INTRODUCTIONToday we are going to tell you something about Newcastle. The city is 2000 years old and it was a Roman settlement. Today it is one of the biggest cities in England and it is also a huge cultural centre, which is famous for its night life.

HISTORYThe city was founded as a Roman settlement, namedPons Aelious. It was next to the Hadrian wall, whichRepresented a border of the Roman empire. Latermining developed here. In the 16th century Newcastle was avery important Port, which Newcastle was famous for. In 19thcentury industrial revolution started.

POSITIONNewcastle is in Great Britain in the North-east of England. To

GATESHEAD MILLENNIUM BRIDGE

This bridge is famous, because it leans. It is in a district Quay near

the river Tyne. When a ship goes under the bridge, it goes Up and it goes down for the pedestrians. It was opened in 2001. It cost 22 million pounds. Volker Stevin built it.

THE THEATRE ROYALThe architect of the Theatre Royal was Benjamin Green.Benjamin had a brother John Green who was an architect tooand he built a lot of buildings in this town. Theatre Royal is atheatre in Grey street. It was opened in 1837. In 1899 a huge

firedestroyed its inner part. In 1901 it was re-opened.

INHABITANTSIn Newcastle there were in 2010 292 000 inhabitants, 86% of

themare white people, 7% are Asians and 2% are black people. Theregional name for people from Newcastlen and its surrounding

CULTURENewcastle is known for its many festivals. The most famous

are Beer festival and Chinese festival. People often go to theatresand museums. In Newcastle concerts in Metroradio arena arepopular too.

NIGHT LIFE Newcastle is recognised for its night life. It is on the 3rd place

forits entertainment just after London and Berlin. There are

INTERESTING FACTSThe full name of Newcastle is Newcastle upon Tyne. The rivergives name too many different things in the city. Two
