Americans make up less than 5% of the world population, but consume 25% of the world’s energy?

Did you know….

• Energy Efficiency refers to using technology that requires less energy to perform the same function.

• Conservation is behaviors that result in using less energy.

Energy Efficiency vs. Conservation

• Heating & Cooling – 45% of a home’s total utility bill goes to heating and cooling– Manage the thermostat– Insulate the home– 1/3 of heating/cooling loss

happens through windows– Landscape to block wind and

provide shade

• Appliances – accounts for 24% of the total utility bill– Energy efficient appliances

may be more expensive, but save $ in the long run

– ENERGY STAR® appliances– Read the Energy Guide label

• Lighting– accounts for 10% of the total utility bill– Fluorescent bulbs use 25%

less electricity compared to incandescent bulbs and last 8-12 times longer

• Water Heater– accounts for 13% of the total utility bill– Use less hot water– Lower the hot water thermostat– Purchase a new hot water

heater

• Transportation– Americans spend more than $2,000 on average per year on fuel for their cars.– See page 4 on your handout for

ways to save gas.

• Reduce the amount of waste you produce

• Reuse when possible

• Recycle

• Strive for sustainability: using energy without compromising the needs of future generations.
