Respect - Responsibility - Participation - Safety Quality Education in a Caring Environment Term 3, Week 7 - Issue 28 Wednesday 4 September, 2019 BULLETIN Tomerong Public School http://www.tomerong-p.schools.nsw.edu.au PRINCIPALS REPORT Dear all, Music Festival Im looking forward to seeing our amazing choir on stage at tonight s music festival. They are sounding absolutely fantastic and I know each of the schools will sound magnificent. Tournament of Minds It was a privilege to join our Tournament of Minds team at the University of Wollongong last Sunday as they competed in the Regional ToM Tournament. I was so proud of their efforts! Their script was punchy and they performed beautifully. Well done Ethan, Hayden, Lahna, Anna, Layla and Sarah! Spelling Bee We wish Levi, Eben, Bailey and Harry L every success next Tuesday when they participate in the Regional Spelling Bee finals at Shoalhaven Heads Public School. Great work. School Attendance Attached to this Bulletinis information about compulsory school attendance. We know that school attendance has a direct correlation to student achievement so it is imperative that students attend every day unless they are sick or legally excused. Please be aware that it is a requirement for explanations to be given within 7 days of a child's absence. The teacher will then make a determination about what sort of absence it will be recorded as, in line with the codes outlined in the DoE student attendance policy. This process is overseen by the principal. It is important to note that the Department of Education's attendance software automatically records student absences as an unjustified absence if no explanation is provided within 7 days of the first absence. There are a number of ways parents and caregivers can notify the school of the reason for their child's absence, the most common being a note upon the return to school (please note that it must be received within 7 days of the first absence if they have more than one day off, not 7 days from their return to school.) Parents can also email the school at tomerong-[email protected]. An increasing number of parents are using a function on our Skoolbag App to notify the school as this proves to be a fast and effective way of providing a reason for absence. Retrieving the messages from the app at the school level is also an easy process, so I encourage you to consider using this app if you are not already. The final option of notifying the school is to give a verbal reason over the phone, and while this meets requirements, we appreciate it when parents also provide a note being written upon the child's return to school. A reminder also that every effort should be made for your child to be at school by the morning bell at 9:10. If for some reason your child is late, please ensure they are signed in through the office. Assembly There will be an assembly this Friday, commencing at 2:30pm. 4-5S will be presenting an item. As always, parents and friends are welcome. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear all,

Music Festival I’m looking forward to seeing our amazing choir on stage at tonight’s music festival.

Great work.

PEER SUPPORT This week, the focus of Peer Support is on Plan, the second step of the model students learnt about last session. In Peer Support students learn about the need to develop a range of coping strategies and be creative in drawing on these when planning responses. Responses include persevering, seeing the positive side to situations and engaging in activities they enjoy as a distraction for a short time. Encourage your child to talk with you about strategies they could use as difficulties arise. Miss Doumbos

P&C NEWS Father’s Day Stall Thanks to everyone who supported our Father’s Day stall last week. It was a great success especially with the amount of donations received. It is very much appreciated. Run4Fun Colour Explosion Everyone should have their School Run4Fun Colour Explosion sponsorship form now and be busy fundraising. It is the P&C’s major fundraiser this term so we do ask for your support. The more money we raise the more we can provide for the students through vital school projects such as an amphitheatre extension. The School Run4Fun Colour Explosion will be held on Friday 27 September, last day of term. Bean-Cycled Oyster Mushroom Kits Great news! The Bean-Cycled oyster mushroom kits are getting delivered next week. If you ordered one, you will be contacted by the P&C when they arrive and be given instructions about pick-up. P&C Meeting The next P&C meeting will be held on Monday 16 September at 6pm in the library. See you there! Tomerong Public School P&C Association

TOURNAMENT OF MINDS Well done to our 2019 Tournament of Minds team ‘The Quin Ts’ who presented their solution to 'The Arts' challenge last Sunday at the University of Wollongong. The challenge was to rewrite “The Wizard of Oz” as though it was set in

Australia. The team have been working endlessly on the challenge for the last six weeks making props and costumes, writing a script and rehearsing. They did a fantastic job and made Tomerong Public School very proud. A big thanks to all their parents for their support too. Mrs Raymer

OFFICE NEWS Gymnastics Payments Thank you to those parents/carers who have paid in full or are making regular weekly payments for our Gymnastics Program. The program has two weeks remaining. Parents and carers are reminded that payments can be sent in each week ($4 per session) or they can make use of our Parent Online Payment facility on our school’s website. If you have any enquiries regarding payments or if you would like to know the balance owing for your child, please don’t hesitate to contact our office staff on 4443 4376. Thank you Marg Blair

SRC ‘TEAMS FOR TURF’ FUNDRAISER A reminder that this Friday, 6 September, the SRC are holding an ‘in school’ fundraiser to raise money to go towards returfing the grass under the soccer goals on our school oval. This is an area of the school that gets used every day by all students at lunchtime and also during class sport times. This Friday, please bring a gold coin donation and come dressed in your favourite sports team’s colours, jersey or your sports team uniform, netball, soccer, football, cricket, whatever you like! No studded shoes. We look forward to a fun day!

Mrs Darby
