INTRODUCTION
This finding aid focuses on the addition to the Catherine (Katie) Sarver Tompkins
Genealogical Collection. Spanning the years 1940-1962, the papers contain genealogical
research and other genealogical materials collected by Mrs. Tompkins. The Catherine
(Katie) Sarver Tompkins Genealogical Collection - Addition also contains personal
photographs and correspondence of Mrs. Tompkins.
The Catherine (Katie) Sarver Tompkins Genealogical Papers - Addition, were donated to
the Tennessee State Library & Archives by Mrs. T. Bruce Weaver (Minnie Lee
Tompkins) on behalf of the Belle Meade Chapter of the Daughters of American
Revolution. Mrs. Weaver, a niece by marriage of Mrs. Tompkins, donated the papers
over a period from 1968-1974. Much of the genealogical research was organized on the
folder level. It is unknown who organized this material. There was no order detected in
the arrangement of the folders. The other papers and publications of the collection were
in Paige boxes in no order.
The materials found within this collection measure approximately 8.75 cubic feet. Single
photocopies of the papers may be made for scholarly use.
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Catherine (Katie) Sarver was born October 11, 1883, in Fountain Head, Sumner County,
Tennessee. The eldest daughter of James Elmore Sarver (1853-1917) and Julia Adda
Spradlin (1854-1945), Mrs. Tompkins attended schools in Sumner County. Her brother,
John Ervin Sarver, died in 1908 of typhoid fever, at the age of eighteen. Katie Sarver
married Birnnie Cornelius Tompkins on April 20, 1929, in Nashville, Tennessee. Birnnie
Tompkins was born in Smith County, Tennessee, on February 26, 1893, and died June 9,
1958, in Nashville, Tennessee.
Mrs. Tompkins held a variety of jobs over the course of her career. She worked as a day
operator for Cumberland Telephone & Telegraph Company, and as a night chief operator
for the Gainesboro Telephone Company in Bowling Green, Kentucky, from 1904-1905.
Mrs. Tompkins then worked as a bookkeeper for Hester Brothers, Naïve-Spillers Produce
Co., the Singer Sewing Machine Company, the Chambers Co., and the C.B. Ragland Co.
Mrs. Tompkins also worked as a billing clerk for Gardner & Co., of Portland, Tennessee,
and as a billing clerk and cost accountant for Robert Orr & Co., until ill health forced her
to retire in 1933. From 1941-1942, Mrs. Tompkins served as a voting registrar for the
20th ward in Nashville, Tennessee. During World War II, labor shortages led Mrs.
Tompkins to take a job as a bookkeeper for the American Tea & Coffee Co., where her
husband served as an employee for many years. After her retirement, she devoted her
time to genealogical research. Mrs. Tompkins died in April 1968.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Catherine Sarver Tompkins Genealogical Collection - Addition consists of
genealogical research and materials, photographs, notebooks, personal and genealogical
correspondence, and newspaper clippings. The bulk of the material falls within the
period of 1940-1962. The arrangement of the collection is as follows: genealogical
research and materials; notebooks; and personal papers. The arrangement of the
collection within the three above-mentioned categories is alphabetical.
Genealogical research comprises the largest portion of the collection. Mrs. Tompkins
spent time researching genealogy from the early 1940s until the mid-1960s. Mrs.
Tompkins researched for the various branches of her own family tree as well as the
genealogies of other families. In addition to her own research are copies of genealogical
research produced by her various contacts. Some of the families found within the
collection include the Hollis, Sarver, Rice, and Hodges families.
Several other types of genealogical materials are also located in the collection. The index
to Oregon Land Claims will be of interest to researchers whose ancestors migrated to
Oregon in the nineteenth century. There are several genealogical publications in the
collection that may also be useful to a genealogical researcher. These publications
include annotated copies of the Genealogical Acorn, the Genealogical Helper,
Genealogical Newsletter, and Genealogy & History. Mrs. Tompkins also collected
newspaper clippings on the various families she researched. Copies of obituaries,
wedding announcements, and other newspaper articles are located in the collection. The
newspaper clippings were photocopied and discarded in accordance with standard
archival practice.
Several notebooks containing genealogical research are also a part of the collection. The
notebooks present the genealogies of the Hodges, Hollis, Spradlin, and Sarver families
along with a thumbnail sketch of the various members of the family. These notebooks
will be of interest to those interested in the genealogy of the families mentioned above.
Genealogical correspondence of Mrs. Tompkins is a large part of the collection. Mrs.
Tompkins corresponded with many people regarding genealogical research over the
course of her lifetime. The correspondence in the addition provides further information
on a number of family histories. Many of the letters also contain personal remembrances
of family members. The correspondence also offers insight into some of the problems
faced by genealogical researchers. Anyone using the collection for genealogical research
will find a rich source of information in the correspondence of Mrs. Tompkins. Some of
the more prolific of Mrs. Tompkins’ correspondents include Thomas Groves, Helen
Hardin, Lizzie Roney, and Grace Puryear.
Photographs constitute a significant portion of the collection. The photographs range
from the late nineteenth century until the 1960s. Of particular note are the World War I
photographs of the collection, taken, perhaps, by Birnnie Tompkins, who served in World
War I. Trenches, soldiers, calvary, tombs, and casualties are some of the subjects of
photographs taken. The bulk of the rest of the photographs are of Mrs. Tompkins’
family.
The Catherine (Katie) Sarver Tompkins Genealogical Collection - Addition provides
valuable sources of information to genealogical researchers. The collection will also
provide information about the types of problems faced by genealogical researchers.
