1. Skiing At Mt Ruapehu, you can enjoy the longest ski season in Australasia (June to October) on New Zealand’s largest commercial ski fields. There’s brilliant skiing, snowboarding, sledding and snow play for everyone, from the littlest snow bunnies to serious athletes and adventurers. There’s more room to ski at Whakapapa Ski Area, Turoa Ski Area and Tukino Ski Field than at all the commercial South Island ski fields put together.

Whakapapa Ski Area is only a 40 minute drive from Motutere Top 10 Holiday Park and is New Zealand’s largest ski area with over 65 trails to discover, ranging from beginner and intermediate to extreme. Whether you’re interested in snow play, having a coffee at New Zealand’s highest cafe, starting out skiing or snowboarding or you’re looking for a new challenge, Whakapapa Ski Area has the terrain and snow conditions to cater for everyone.

Turoa Ski Area is a favourite with those who enjoy the space and freedom of its wide open bowls and chutes. Snowboarders will love the terrain park, and more advanced skiers and boarders will find long linking runs and access to backcountry areas from the top of Australasia’s highest chairlift.

Beginners can find their feet at the family-friendly Happy Valley learner’s area at Whakapapa or Turoa’s Alpine Meadow. More advanced skiers can head straight for the long runs and big open bowls of the back-country areas, accessible by chairlift.

There are daily shuttles and private-hire transport options to the mountain direct from Turangi and Taupō town. You can sort all your gear and passes at Turangi or on the mountain.

Push your limits, challenge your fears and create memories of a lifetime. Complimentary pick-up available from anywhere within Taupo. {Children 10-15 yrs require parental permission}. Solo and tandem options available.

4. River Rafting from $99

Lake Taupo’s Tongariro River is home to three sections of white water, ranging from Grade 2 to Grade 4.

Tours start from basic 2 hour family & first time rafting packages to heart-pounding roller coaster rapids for the less faint-hearted. There are several companies to choose from so you will find the perfect tour for you. Speak to our staff at reception for more info.

5. Golf $$ check with reception

Golfers have the availability of three 18 hole golf courses, all within driving distance of our park. One of these has been voted New Zealand’s number 1 golf course and is a unique environment where golf and the natural habitat work in harmony. There is also “Adventure Mini Golf” situated in Turangi, Taupo Mini Golf and ‘Hole in One’ Taupo – visitors aim at a floating golf target with a chance to win a hole in one prize. Reception can provide directions.

2. Skydiving from $199

There are a couple of awesome skydiving companies to choose from. You’ll have an absolutely amazing view of volcanoes, coast to coast views of the North Island and the incredible clear waters of Lake Taupo as you freefall.{NOTE: There is no age limit. If you are under 18 years of age you will need a parent or guardian to sign a consent form on your behalf. Young children will be assessed on a case-by-case basis}. Bookings available at reception.

3. Taupo Bungy & Cliffhanger Extreme Swing from $180

At 47 metres, Taupo Bungy is New Zealand’s highest water touch bungy jump from the world’s first cantilever platform.

If a seated freefall is more your style, try the mind-blowing rush of the Cliffhanger extreme swing. Once harnessed, admire the view as you dangle 44 metres above the river. On the release, feel the thrill of freefalling towards the river, then soaring through the air as the swing reaches speeds of up to 70kp/h.

7. Taupo Floatplanes from $165

Spectacular scenic flights in a high wing Cessna 206 Floatplane. Unrestricted views looking down on beautiful Lake Taupo and the snow-capped volcanoes of Tongariro National Park. Taking off from and landing on water is an experience never forgotten. A tick for the “BUCKET LIST”.

10. Trout Fishing FREE or packages from $150 per hour

The lake offers excellent fishing all year round with no closed season on the lake. Mainly boat fishing in the summer and fly fishing in the winter. Ask reception for more details as we offer free basic rod hire and also stock fishing gear & bait for fishing on the shores of the lake right in front of the park. Combine this with kayak hire from the holiday park and you have the perfect fishing experience.

Alternatively, you can take a private fishing charter, scenic cruise or sailing trip. There are a number of companies to choose from offering different packages and experiences to suit everybody. Prices will vary depending on what you are after.

Note: Trout fishing requires a licence available from park reception, online at www.doc.govt.nz , the Taupo & Turangi I-SITEs or fishing shops in town.

8. Sailing to Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings from $49

The giant Mine Bay Māori rock carving of Ngātoroirangi on Lake Taupō has been hailed as one of New Zealand’s most extraordinary contemporary Māori artworks. Towering 14-metres above the clear water of Lake Taupō, the carving has become one of the North Island’s biggest tourist attractions. The Mine Bay Māori rock carvings are accessible by boat only, and can be reached by taking a scenic cruise, sailing or kayaking trip from Taupō Boat Harbour. Selected sailing companies will allow you to swim and BYO food and beverages and, if you’re up for a bit of action, you can help hoist the sails or take a turn at the wheel. 9. Taurikura Maori Cultural Experience Scenic Cruise from $55 adult $20 child

As you cruise in complete comfort to the famous Maori Rock Carvings you will enjoy an interactive performance of traditional Maori songs and Kapa Haka. A great trip for everyone, with a heart-warming performance for all ages and interaction with the performers whilst on board. You will also receive a selection of breads with homemade dips. 11. Huka Falls River Cruise

This cruise is the only way you can stand above the turbulent white water and experience the power of the Huka Falls! (For those who are more into relaxation rather than adventure).

Suitable for all ages, so the whole family can experience the awesome Huka Falls. Make sure you keep an eye out for native birds, trout and other critters as you will be surrounded by some of New Zealand’s best native bush. Ask at the park reception on how to book.

12. Kayaking / Stand-up paddleboard (SUP) from $25

You can hire kayaks and SUP’s directly from our reception. Hire includes paddle, life jacket & dry bag. $10 per wetsuit. We have singles or doubles and hire options are from hourly, ½ or full day. See our staff for details.

From Taupo town you can also take guided kayaking trips to the Maori Rock Carvings or experience kayaking the Waikato River, ideal for families looking for low-key gentle kayaking.

13. Swimming / Snorkelling FREE

Swim, snorkel and generally enjoy the clear, pristine, beautiful waters of the lake from your own beach in front of our holiday park. Waters around Lake Taupo teem with fascinating underwater life and the usually clear waters make for excellent viewing. Lake Taupo is home to freshwater plants in abundance, as well as an interesting variety of other aquatic life. You’ll find snails and crayfish, trout and catfish, cockabullies and mussels, smelt, and even brilliant orange freshwater sponges. With beautiful walls which were formed over the millennia, this lake was once a volcano. Geologists believe that the explosion which transformed it from mountain to lake was the largest eruption ever, as rocks from the mountain have been found in the Northern hemisphere.

In summer Motutere Bay Top 10 Holiday Park has their floating tramp available for use by it’s guests only. Loads of fun for big and little kids. Sign up at reception.

14. Park Hill Hike & Trail Running FREE

From our park boundary there is an unmarked track which grants you access to almost endless trails within the forest behind our property. The beginning of the track is quite steep and challenging, but only lasts 100 metres or so. Once you reach the top you are rewarded with stunning views over Lake Taupo and long forest trails which have more gradual inclines and are suitable for running. Please ask our friendly staff to point out the track entrance.

15. The Great Lake Walkway FREE

This walk is a 10km trail along the lake edge, beginning at Lake Taupo Yacht Club to Five Mile Bay. With picnic and swimming spots dotted here and there and toilet facilities in all the bays, this is an ideal family outing.

16. Tongariro Alpine Crossing FREE

Featuring an amazing view of Mt Ngauruhoe – known as Mt Doom to those die hard LOTR (Lord of The Rings) fans – the famous Tongariro crossing is arguably NZ’s best one day hike. You will experience dramatic volcanic landscapes, emerald lakes and epic scenery. There is a shuttle service available to drop off & pick up at each end of the hike. Bookings are a must.

17. Spa Park to Huka Falls FREE

A 2 hour walk along the Waikato River will have you reaching the Huka Falls. A further 4 hours will bring you to the Aratiatia Rapids where you can view the opening of the dam at 10am, 12pm & 2pm daily (4pm in summer).

18. Tokaanu Thermal Walk FREE

A short walk amongst native bush provides a glimpse of steaming hot mineral pools set in sinter basins and spluttering mud pools. At the entrance you can see rainbow trout in the cold stream which flows alongside the thermal area.

The Ngati Kurauia people have lived alongside the Tokaanu stream since the 16th century and used the supply of hot thermal waters and steam vents for cooking and boiling flax for weaving. Located 6km from Turangi on SH41.

19. Bike Trails from $65 per day

Various bike trails offer experiences to suit every kind of rider. These experiences range from grade 1-2 family and e-bike tracks to overnight, grade 5 downhills and mountain bike parks. There are a variety of scenic trails including the Great Lake Trail which skirts the forested shores of the lake with amazing views across to the peaks of the mountains, wetlands, lush forest, waterfalls and beaches.

There are a number of companies which offer a range of services including bike hire, shuttles, guided rides and fully catered cycling trips. Bike hire starts at around $65 per day including helmets.

PAMPERING AND INDULGENCE

20. Spa Thermal Park FREE

This park is a favourite for anyone who is on a budget or prefers a more rustic experience. The highlight is the hot Otumuheke Stream which flows into the Waikato River creating natural hot pools. To access the hot pools from the carpark, take the footpath through the grass parklands for approximately 500 metres. This is also the starting point of the popular walk to Huka Falls (see walks). The parklands contain a variety of family activities including walking tracks, playgrounds and a flying fox.

Located off Spa Road approximately 5 minute drive from central Taupo.

21. Waikarei Terraces $25 adult

Bath in geothermal water that is drawn to the earth’s surface from 1.5 kilometres underground. Let the sound of the healing and therapeutic water flowing over the silica terraces and into the pools below calm your mind. There is something to suit everyone with pools of varying temperatures. The waters of Wairakei have long been used by Maori for its healing properties. This is an adult only activity.

24. Craters of the Moon $8 adult $4 child

Craters of the Moon showcase the natural thermal activity of Taupo including bubbling craters, steam vents and colourful soils. Enjoy this fantastic geothermal area along well-formed pathways and with elevated viewing platforms. You’ll also see interesting plants that have adapted to thrive in the hot steamy conditions.

Open every day from 8.30am to 6.00pm from 1 October to 31 March and 8.30am to 5pm from 1 April to 30 September. Closed Christmas Day.

25. Lava Glass Gallery & Café entry $15 glassblowing & garden

Lava Glass is a glass art gallery, glassblowing studio and sculpture garden by world-renowned master glassblower Lynden Over. The Lava Glass complex offers a unique window into the art of glassblowing and original New Zealand inspired glass art pieces. The licensed gourmet café serves aromatic coffee, drinks and delectable homemade foods.

Sharing Taupo stories with the world – browse the galleries and share the unique history, culture and stories of the community. Open daily from 10am to 4.30pm (closed Christmas Day & Good Friday).

27. Taupo Markets FREE

These are held every Saturday from 10am – 1pm at the Riverside Park on Redoubt Street, adjacent to the Waikato River. Here you will find local produce which is grown, made or sourced around the area, arts & crafts, food & coffee. There is plenty of parking and paving for prams and wheelchairs.

28. Whakapapa Summer Chairlift Adult: $29 Child $15

This is an easy drive (with a camper) and then a relaxed, scenic chairlift ride over Mt Ruapehu’s volcanic terrain to 1,800 metres above sea level. You will experience amazing views, and this offers an alternative to Tongariro Crossing with the option to hike or not.

29. Waipahihi Botanical Reserve FREE

Located at the top of Shepherd Road, the gardens are maintained by around 20 volunteers on a weekly basis. The reserve now claims well over 2,000 rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas strategically intermingled in the forest trees with other feature plantings. As well as lots of walking trails the 2km loop walk affords great views of Taupo township, Mount Tauhara and the lake itself. Picnic tables and seats are dotted throughout the park. Open until dusk each day.

30. Mind Junction activities prices start from $4.00

A great collection of family friendly activities including a giant maze, discovery centre, remote control boats, model train railway, shooting simulator, mini golf and a flight simulator. Sit and have a coffee whilst playing with the puzzles free of charge at the café tables. Open 7 days a week from 10.00am to 4.00pm (closed Christmas & Boxing Day).

31. Huka Prawn Park from $29.50

Your admission includes Hook-a-Prawn fishing, aqua trike, feeding the trout, stand up paddle boarding and so much more. The Riverside restaurant is situated on the banks of the Waikato River and offers a mouth-watering selection of prawn dishes to choose from.
