Factors Affecting Deposition

Particle size

Larger particles settle more quickly than smaller particles (if they have the same shape and density)

Particle Shape

Particles of the same size and maximum diameter will settle out in this order: round, oval, flat

The more spherical the particle, the faster the settling rate.

As flatness increases, settling time increases.

Remember: A short time is a high rate!

Particle density

The denser the particle, the faster it will settle in particles that have the same size and shape.

The rate at which particles are deposited by a stream is least affected by

1. size and shape of the particles 2. velocity of the stream 3. the stream’s elevation above sea level 4. density of the particles

Roundest, largest, and densest particles will be at the bottom of each layer.

Smallest, flattest, and least dense will be at the top of each layer.
