TOUCHMARK ON SADDLE DRIVE THE{FULL} LIFE March 2014 Learning about ghost towns with author Author Preethi Burkholder spoke about her book, Ghost Towns of the Rockies, and the historical events and circumstances that created the ghost towns. “When the money ran out, people walked,” shared Burkholder. “A ghost town is one that had a boom period at one point and was then abandoned.” She called these abandonments “death” for the towns and classified them as either natural (due to flood, fire, or drought) or economic, such as with mining busts and related job losses. Most of the towns covered in Burkholder’s book experienced economic downturns in the mining industry of gold, silver, coal, and copper. Residents listened to author Preethi Burkholder discuss her book, Ghost Towns of the Rockies, and the historical events and circumstances that created the ghost towns. The presentation also included piano music, as Preethi is a classically trained pianist and holds a master’s degree in ethnomusicology from Tufts University.
