CULTURAL HERITAGE BOOKLET

HERITAGE TOWERS and SANTA SUSANNA CORNERS

The Santa Susanna Tourist Office makes two booklets available to tourists that collect all the

essential information about the Santa Susanna Watch Towers, in addition to including a

recommended itinerary proposal between the different heritage elements of the municipality

with an approximate duration of 1h 30 minutes. It can also be found on the Santa Susanna

Tourism web portal in pdf format in Catalan, Spanish, English and French.

LOCAL ARTISAN PRODUCT

The Santa Susanna Tourist Office makes available to tourists of the municipality the purchase of

local artisan products made by Ana Fonoll (local artist). In total there are 5 pieces of ceramic

identifying Santa Susanna with the symbolism of the Masía de Can Ratés.

The local handmade product consists of a ceramic tower (€ 13), a magnet (€ 4) and three

pendants (€ 7).

2. CULTURAL RESOURCES

INTRODUCTION Santa Susanna is a village with origins in the twelfth century, when the Alfata valley was populated by farmers who cultivated the fields of vineyards and cereals. From the medieval time are preserved the watchtowers, the chapel of Santa Susanna and old farmhouses, some of them are still habited and as the case of Can Rosich, is used for rural tourism. All buildings are part of our heritage and they keep alive the value of the history.

WATCHTOWERS Santa Susanna is possibly the town of Maresme that preserves more watchtowers. They were built between s.XV and XVIII as a defence against the pirate attacks, which were common in the area. Mostly of them have a circular base, with the exception of Can Bonet that has a square one.

MASIA DE CAN RATÉS Carrer Montseny, s / n, Santa Susanna

The Can Ratés refuge tower (the former Mas Poch) is cylindrical, with arrow slits. It is backed by the farmhouse itself, at the apex of an angle created by the portico gallery. This is the section that previously housed the stables, and the bedrooms on the upper floor, an arrangement which served to leave a large open space in the centre, used for threshing.

MAS GALTER Carrer del Bou, 25, Santa Susanna

The Mas Galter tower has a cylindrical layout cut off at the top. It stands on Carrer del Bou, alongside Plaça Lola Anglada and the Colomer Park. It is currently owned by the Pi family.

CAN BONET D’AVALL Carrer Miralles, s/n, Santa Susanna

The lower Can Bonet tower has a rectangular layout. It was probably built in the late 15th century. It was refurbished and improved in 1805, to plaster the walls and paint them in ochre, while also modifying the upper part. This means it now has the appearance of a tower four centuries later than when it was built, as it is similar to a construction from the 19th century.

PLA DE LA TORRE O TORRE DEL MAR Avinguda del Mar, s/n, Santa Susanna

The Torre del Mar follows the cylindrical model, but differs from the other watchtowers in its larger diameter. And also its position, located closer to the sea than the other towers. As a result, the train platforms stand at the base of the tower, perfectly illustrating the blend of modernity and tradition in Santa Susanna.

TORRE MONTAGUT Carrer dels Nards, s/n, Santa Susanna

The Montagut tower was built in the 19th century. It is tower number 213 on the line of civil optical telegraphy towers, on the branch from Barcelona to La Jonquera. As with the Torre de Can Bonet, it has a rectangular layout, but in this case has never been restored.

VALL XIRAU Urb. Alt Maresme – Carrer Formentor, 55

16th-17th century fortified tower with a round design abutting a former farmhouse now converted into summer holiday accommodation, within a modern urban development. It is in very good condition following restoration. The corbels of the defensive machicolation remain visible.

CHURCHES AND CHAPELS In Santa Susanna there are different religion buildings. The church of Santa Susanna is known for its paintings of the sanctuary, made by Aurelio Crosiet, who was a downward of Josep Maria Sert, a specialist to decorate large spaces. Most of the other buildings are located in a beautiful natural place.

PARISH CHURCH OF SANTA SUSANNA Plaça Catalunya, s/n, Santa Susanna

The parish church of Santa Susanna is a simple building erected during the post-war period through the efforts of all the local residents, working without pay to build it. Worthy of particular note are the paintings in the presbytery, by Aurelio Crosiet, a student of José María Sert, who specialised in decorating large spaces by painting on canvas covered with a fine layer of gold. The central painting is an allegory of the Eucharist. On the right we see a representation of the martyrdom of St Susanna, while the painting on the left is a fantastical vision of her arrival in heaven. The dome depicts a clouded sky with one evangelist in each corner.

CHAPEL OF SANT ISIDRE Plaça Llillota, s/n, Santa Susanna

The Chapel of Sant Isidre was affected by the laying of the Maresme motorway, forcing it to be dismantled and rebuilt a few metres beyond the former site. It now stands right on Plaça de Llillota. It is a modern structure, but retains the charms of a location within a natural setting of great beauty, the perfect place to stroll and relax.

CHAPEL OF SANT CRIST DE BALASCH Carretera Vella, 6, Santa Susanna

The famed chapel of Sant Crist de Balasch, a site of pilgrimage in Santa Susanna, is a small oratory positioned at a crossroads, where travellers would pray to the saint for a successful continuation of their journey. Lit candles can still be seen today, a clear sign of the devotion felt. The Chapel of Sant Crist de Balasch is on the central route, surrounded by the farmland of the plains of Santa Susanna.

THE FORMER CHAPEL OF SANTA SUSANNA Riera de Santa Susanna, s/n, Santa Susanna

The former chapel of Santa Susanna gives its name to the town, its distinctive feature being that it abuts another building. A stone escutcheon recalls that of Can Ratés, revealing that the farmhouse and the chapel belonged to the same family. The chapel is in fact positioned between Can Ratés and Can Bonet, two historic buildings in Santa Susana. The chapel has been restored by its owners.

SHRINE OF MARE DE DÉU DE GRÀCIA Pujada de Gràcia, s/n, Santa Susanna

Another notable building in Santa Susanna is the shrine of Our Lady of Grace, which lies within the municipal boundaries although it is owned by the town of Pineda. As it is close to both towns, the population of Santa Susanna and Pineda typically walk there either to proclaim their devotion to the Virgin Mary or to explore the beautiful sites along the route through the local woodland.

MONUMENTS AND EXCEPTIONAL BUILDINGS

MOLÍ FARINER D’EN JORDÀ (MOLÍ D’EN RUFO) I PONT ROMÀNIC

This former flour mill, dating from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, drew water from the Santa Susanna stream. A number of the walls of the mill building still survive, along with the structure of the double-arched aqueduct that channelled water to the mill.

PARET D’EN RATÉS The Paret d’en Ratés is the name given to this water conduit, built in the 19th century. It represents an example of vernacular construction, making use of water resources as a part of the network channelling water as far as the Can Ratés estate.

FORT DE LA GUERRA CIVIL

The Civil War Bunker stands by the Platja de les Dunes beach in Santa Susanna, and was one of the line of defensive features built by the Republican town councils of the district of Maresme to protect themselves and keep watch over the territory for the aircraft of the Nationalist forces deployed from Majorca to bombard Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939)

PARKS Santa Susanna is in a privileged location next to the natural park of Montnegre, so it is very easy to have contact with nature. You can also enjoy the picnic areas or large green areas.

FONT DEL BOTER PARK Peace and quiet and an attractive setting make the Font del Boter Park in Santa Susanna the perfect place for a stroll, or even suspend the whole day. It has a fun and leisure section, with a picnic area at the entrance.

3. BEACHES

DUNAS BEACH The avenue and the beach are one of the most representatives of the town, which is located on the right side of the station, towards Pineda. The beach is very wide and comfortable, and it is one of the longest of Maresme. Moreover, all the area is complemented by different elements to practice some sports and the building of dunes with natural elements that promotes the creation of green dots and fitness circuit. During the months of July and August, and inside the program that has Santa Susanna of Family Holiday, activities are performed in the Mini Beach Club, a leisure space and entertainment for the whole family, where the little ones will enjoy lots of activities (Schedule: July and August from 10.00 13.00 and 16.00 to 18.00) There is the Nautical Base, where people can perform activities such as kayak, windsurf, sailing…

MINI BEACH CLUB

The Mini Beach Club is one of the services that the destination of Santa Susanna makes available

to tourists who come to spend their family vacations. It is open during the months of July and

August and is located on the beach of Las Dunas, along with the Nautical Base. This Children's

Club is for children from 4 to 12 years old who have free entry if they are staying in

accommodation in Santa Susanna and access with the corresponding entertainment

department of each accommodation, which accompanies them with the free Cuc service to the

children's club.

NAUTICAL BASE

The Nautical Base of Santa Susanna offers courses in dinghy sailing, windsurfing or sea kayaking.

In addition, it rents different types of material (by the hour, day, season tickets and seasons). It

has a sea centre for boys and girls, which will bring them closer to nautical culture, the growth

of the sea and encourage them to practice sports.

LLEVANT BEACH The Llevant beach has the distinctive Biosphere Destination, which as a tourist destination assumes the following principles: its sustainable management, for economic and social development, for the conservation and improvement of cultural heritage, environmental conservation, quality and safety and the involvement of the visitor.

CAMPAIGN “TAKE CARE SANTA SUSANNA”

“Take care of Santa Susanna” is the new campaign by the City Council with the support of the

Barcelona Provincial Council to keep the beaches clean.

The City Council has started an awareness campaign among tourists and residents of the town

to keep the beaches clean. The action was chosen by the Tourism Sectorial Council and its

objective is to protect our beaches, which are some of the most appreciated on the Barcelona

Coast. In addition, working to keep the coastline of Santa Susanna clean of plastics, glass, bags,

etc. it is a way of helping to safeguard the sustainability of the Mediterranean.

The campaign consists of a series of vertical advertisements, which are distributed throughout

the town, where it is requested that no plastic be left on the beach and the material that must

be thrown in each container is taught. At the beach they are already located in the campaign

panels in addition to the information available at their first aid points. In addition, there are

supports to put a plastic bag inside and thus enhance the collection of garbage generated on the

beach.

Children’s Club on the beach for children between 4 and 12 years old. The Ranxo Mestres is situated in a typical Catalan farmhouse of the XIII century, just outside the Montnegre Park. Activity description The new route, the first one in Catalonia that runs along the coast and which is called the "Camí de Sant Jaume", has already reached the municipality and adheres, in fact, to the signposting of the Marina, as will be known the layout of the Roman Via Augusta. The project envisages including the path of the Civil War paths, which mark, among others, some of the bunkers of the time that are found along the coast in the compostel route of the Maresme. The Tourist Office is the stamping point for pilgrims and credentials can also be purchased. Price: 2€. The Santa Susanna Tourist Office has several seals that guarantee the quality of its services, as

well as compliance with environmental and accessibility criteria.

Q DE CALIDAD

The Santa Susanna Tourist Office works every year in compliance with the quality standards of

the Q mark for Tourist Quality granted by the ICTE. The certification was granted for the first

time in December 2008, therefore, it has been eleven years since the seal has been renewed

annually, in compliance with its requirements.

BIOSPHERE DISTINCTIVE

The Santa Susanna Tourist Office has been awarded the Biosphere distinction since 2017, a

continuous renovation that guarantees the quality of its sustainable development policy.

TOURIST INFORMATION POINT

The Santa Susanna Tourist Office is part of the Maresme Tourist Information Points network, a

project that was born from the Technical Office of Tourism, the Management Office of the

Barcelona Provincial Council and is coordinated by Maresme.

This initiative seeks to improve the quality of the tourist information offered in the territory,

create a network of public-private tourist information and give formal recognition of the task of

informing and advising that many of the tourist establishments and services are already

conducting.

SAFE TOURISM CERTIFIED

The Santa Susanna Tourist Office requested and received in 2020 the Safe Tourism seal, awarded

by the Spanish Tourism Quality Institute (ICTE), with the aim of being officially recognized as an

establishment that complies with hygienic-sanitary measures for prevention of the risks before

the Covid19.

Santa Susanna is part of the Family Tourism Destination - Family Beach seal of the Catalan

Tourism Agency. It must comply with a total of 13 parameters: information on schedules and

transport connections, safety guide and certified services in the family tourism brand; program

of recreational sports and cultural activities; information on activities for children; information

about hospitals, pharmacies and CAP; information on tourist attractions: satisfaction surveys:

destination maps; meteorological information; information on parking; hiking and mountain

biking plans; identification bracelets; access for cars.

MTB CENTRE

The Tourist Office acts as a reception point for the Santa Susanna BTT Centre and has the

objective of offering tourist information and complementary services related to the practice of

mountain biking, considered a sports and leisure activity. At the same time, it becomes the

starting point for the different signposted itineraries and all the routes total a minimum of 100

kilometers to facilitate the routes and the knowledge of the natural, scenic and cultural wealth

of Santa Susanna as much as possible.
