The Digitization of Indonesian Education is one of the key steps towards building a $7 Trillion Economy, the main theme for the 6th Annual Indonesia Economic Forum. The panelists for this discussion were GogotSuharwoto, Head of Pustekkom and Head of Bureau of Planning & International Relations; Ananto Kusama Seta, Senior Advisor to the Minister of Education on Innovation and Competitiveness, Ministry of Education, RI; Sumner Lemon, Regional Sales Director, Asia Pacific & Japan Territory, Intel Corporation; Aidan McCarthy, Principle—K12 Digital Transformation and Strategy, Microsoft Corporation; Dr. Rizal Hamzah, CEO Schoology Asia. The session was moderated by Sachin Gopalan, Co-Founder, Indonesia Economic Forum.

The panel agreed that the digitization of the Indonesian education system has to start by shifting the mindsets of educators. Mr. Sachin Gopalan mentioned that it is imperative for students to learn how to learn as this process is paramount in moving forward. With its young demographic profile, a connected and committed society, and the government’s 20% budget allocation towards education, there is much to be optimistic in boosting the education sector.

One of the main challenges facing the education sector is the level of skill for teachers, particularly in regard to Information and Communications Technology (ICT). The fourth industrial revolution is changing andaffecting all areas including education. Teachers need to update their pedagogy and knowledge in order to stay relevant and incorporate technology in their classrooms. Mr. Gogot Suharwoto noted that a survey of 20,000 teachers was done to classify their knowledge in ICT, resulting in 40% on teachers achieving the top level and only 26% on the second level. These results allow him to target which teachers need training.

Mr. Aidan McCarthy also asserted that the teachers’ mindsets need to shift in order for them to become more professional and encourage development in that area respectively.

The scale of Indonesia makes it difficult to reach every teacher and student. Mr. Gogot Suharwoto noted that Rumah Belajar, an online learning platform designed to provide learning materials and communication between communities, is being utilized to tackle the issue of teacher training and student learning.

Mr. Rizal Hamzah added that it is imperative for students to have a personalized education in terms of delivery and educational experience as every student is different. He alluded to Big Data as a useful tool formeasuring student mastery in terms of not only exams but also attitude, aptitude, grit, interpersonalcommunication, collaboration, media and information literacy, and social media (and other relevant skills). This tool can also be used to measure schools and teachers.

The issue of digital transformation in education is not only tasked to teachers and the government, but also to the private sector. Mr. Ananto Kusama Seta emphasized the need for partnerships across all actors in order to create a co-learning environment. Currently, the ministry is working on regulations to ease the involvement of the private sector. Mr. Sumner Lemon agreed and stressed the need for a dialogue to encouragepartnerships between private and public actors and to discuss what challenges are a priority. Mr. Aidan McCarthy also highlighted that the internet should be a basic service throughout schools in Indonesia and that hardware must also compliment this initiative.
