ACHIEVING JUSTICE. #IAMEJ: Meet Alan Jordan Alan has been an active member of EHC’s Colectivo Chilpancingo Pro Justicia Ambiental Youth Group in Tijuana for five years. Living near the Arroyo Alamar River, he deeply cares about its preservation, which is why he helped create educational materials and is helping with the creation of a mural. Alan is also a part of group’s music workshop, learning to play the ukele and guitar. Birth of a New Mural in Chicano Park The Chicano Park Herb Garden mural titled: “Haawka: May the Fire in Your Heart Burn Bright”, an indigenous Kumeyaay greeting, started to be painted in August. This will be one of the largest murals in Chicano Park and community members will continue to help renowned muralist Alicia M. Siu paint this masterpiece. The goal of the mural is to invite youth to reimage themselves not only as the next generation of leaders in Barrio Logan, but also as Earth’s caretakers. Guardians of the Alamar 200 youth attended the Arroyo Alamar tour in Tijuana. The goal of these tours is to provide young people with the opportunity to learn, connect to the environment and develop a sense of ownership of the Arroyo Alamar, so that they become stewards of it. During the tour, the brand new “Guardians of the Alamar Activities Booklet” was launched. This booklet educates about the importance of the wildlife that inhabit the ecosystem and the negative impacts of trash pollution on them. City of San Diego Makes Environmental Justice a Budget Priority! Funding for increased pedestrian safety on El Cajon Blvd in City Heights, and for the hiring of an Equity Staff position for the implementation of the Climate Action Plan, were included in the City of San Diego 2019 budget. Alan ha sido integrante activo del Grupo de Jóvenesdel Colectivo Chilpancingo Pro Justicia Ambiental deEHC en Tijuana durante los últimos 5 años. Habiéndosecriado cerca del Arroyo Alamar, le importaenormemente su preservación, por lo que ayudó a crearmateriales didácticos y ahora está ayudando con lacreación de un mural. Alan además es integrante de untaller de música que ofrece el Grupo, donde estáaprendiendo a tocar el ukelele y la guitarra.
Nacimiento de un Nuevo Mural en ChicanoParkEl mural en el Jardín Comunitario de Chicano Park,titulado “Haawka: Que el Fuego en Tu Corazón ArdaHasta que Brille” (saludo del pueblo indígena Kumiai),comenzó a pintarse en agosto. Será una de los muralesmás grandes del parque, y gente de la comunidad secontinuarán sumando a la renombrada muralista AliciaM. Siu para pintar esta obra maestra. La meta del murales invitar a la juventud a re-imaginarse no solo como lasiguiente generación de líderes en Barrio Logan, sinotambién como guardianes de la Tierra.
Guardianes del Alamar200 jóvenes se dieron cita para el recorrido por elArroyo Alamar en Tijuana. La meta de estos recorridoses brindar a la juventud la oportunidad de aprender,vincularse con el medioambiente y desarrollar unsentido de pertenencia con el Arroyo Alamar, a fin deque se conviertan en gestores responsables del mismo.Durante el recorrido, se lanzó el nuevo “Cuaderno deActividades Guardianes del Alamar”. El cuadernoinforma acerca de la importancia de la flora y faunasilvestre que habita este ecosistema y los impactosnegativos que les ocasiona la contaminación porbasura.
¡Condado de San Diego Designa la JusticiaAmbiental como Prioridad Presupuestaria!Financiamiento para fortalecer la seguridad peatonal enEl Cajon Blvd. en City Heights, y para la contratación deun puesto de Personal de Equidad para laimplementación del Plan de Acción Climática seincluyeron en el presupuesto 2019 del Municipio de SanDiego. EHC colaboró con Community Budget Alliancepara alcanzar estos logros.
