Stannery Hills Trip 15th and 16th October, 2014
Saturday dawned a bit cloudy but we set off on the trip to Stannery Hills. We had never been there before
so new experiences awaited us. It had been decided to meet the rest of the group in Atherton so off we
went. We arrived at the appointed time to find that the others were there right on time. After a quick
discussion and greetings all
round, the group headed
towards Herberton. Once
through Herberton and onto the
road to Irvinebank it was all new
territory for us so I looked about
with interest. What an intriguing
sight when we passed through
Watsonville and saw the windmill
in the middle of the road. We
turned off the Irvinebank Road at
Hales Siding and headed towards
Stannery Hills.
The little group of 5 vehicles followed the dirt road
north and passed the old Stannery Hills Cemetery and
then turned right onto a slightly rougher track. We
wended our way through the dry scrubby country and
occasional creek beds. A welcome sight of green
appeared as we drove around a waterhole then back
into dry hills and past an old mining sluice. As we
came down a hillside the blue water of a dam came
into view and the radio crackled into life as Steve
welcomed us. He had arrived the day before to enjoy
a quiet day with his little dog. We again turned right
off this track and headed in towards the
dam where we would set up camp. There
was a steep little gully to negotiate and
then a short drive to the edge of the water.
How strange to see such a large amount of
water in such a dry place.
Everyone picked out campsites and some
put up their tents and it was decided to
have lunch before going for a drive to see
some of the old mine workings.

Around 2 o’clock 3 adventurers set
out for the afternoon drive. The little
gully we had crossed on the way in
proved to be a stumbling block for
our tail end Charlie whose vehicle
decided to dig a bit deeper hole than
before. Eventually the winch on the
back of John’s ute was put to good
use to assist in the recovery and the
group continued on the way. We
turned left as we came onto the track
we had been following that morning
and drove on into the hills. When the
road became quite steep and rocky
Tail end Charlie again experienced some
difficulties. After everyone stopped to
discuss the problem it was decided that the
4wd select button wasn’t working properly
but after pushing it on and off a couple of
times it seemed to right itself and the drive
continued.
The view from the top of the hills was quite
spectacular and when we
arrived at the old mine site we
were all suitably impressed.
The mine shafts were very
deep and scary looking which
led to much wondering how
the old miners had managed to
dig them and work in such
conditions. We wandered
around the hill top for some
half hour before heading back
to camp. The trip back was
uneventful as the vehicles all
did the right things without any more problems. On the way back Barry stopped to collect some firewood
for the obligatory campfire. Then it was time to relax. Some went swimming or kayaking and others just
enjoyed the scenery. The campfire was lit and the group gathered around to swap tales. As the sun went
down the air became cooler making for pleasant sleeping conditions.
The next day dawned clear and bright and people gradually started moving around. Some went for early
morning walks and others had early breakfasts. After some discussion it was decided to have an easy

morning and early lunch before leaving for home. There would be a short drive to look at another weir and
possible camp site on the way. Accordingly about 1.00 o’clock all the vehicles moved out.
We drove back the way we had come in until we reached the road near the cemetery. Here we turned
north and followed this road until we reached a memorial which marked the site of the old township of
Stannery Hills. Everyone hopped out to look. The weir Barry wished to see was just down the hill from the
memorial. It was a lovely spot with water lilies and tall gum trees.
Having examined the weir we headed down the road back the way we had come. We stopped once more
to look at the old cemetery and then it was back into the vehicles and head for home. The trip was over.

Special Children’s Christmas Party 22nd November 2014
Cordial at the ready - blue, green, orange or pine; water on hand
we were ready.
It didn’t take long for the children and their families to arrive and
start moving around the festivities that were in store for the eager
children.
Drinks,
sausages,
hot chips,
lunch bags,
photo
booth, face
painting,
jumping
castle,
merry go
round, and
lots more
things to do
and see.
Phew!! But
of course the man in
red was the most
popular.
Later the call was put
out, need volunteers
at the Toy Shop, so I
went and helped walk
children through and
receive presents,
some of their eyes
were so big and the
excitement
uncontrollable. Then a
date with Santa for the
children and the
outing was almost
over.

On stage local entertainers sang and danced away for hours.
This was my first time helping out, glad to be able to help out a
worthy cause.

Ravenshoe Reccy 26th October 2014
We were joining another trip to Ravenshoe so this time we organized with Andy to meet them in
Ravenshoe. This saved us having to get up that hour earlier. Accordingly we waited at the Tall
Timbers Servo and Camp Area till the crew from Cairns arrived. This time there was 8 vehicles in the
convoy.
We headed west
to find the first
track on Andy’s
agenda. This
track went
through the
Timber Reserve
at Bald Rock. We
all pulled off the
highway and
Andy suggested
airing down as
there was some
rough track
ahead. Everyone
managed the steep downhill slopes and uphill climb successfully. The convoy then turned off onto a
little used track and threaded in among the trees. There was a stop and the men walked ahead to
clear some re-growth out of the way. We moved slowly on again but the track seemed to get lost in
a dry swamp and Andy called for a turn around. Back on the first track it was decided to head back
in a loop back to Ravenshoe on the way driving up the hill where the tv transmitters are located to
get a view of Ravenshoe from the top.

Morning Tea/Lunch was
eaten at the park in
Ravenshoe and then it
was decided to drive up
under the power lines to
Herberton. This sounded
interesting as there were
lot of hills to cross
between Ravenshoe and
Herberton. Around 1
o’clock the convoy turned
off the Mount Garnet
Highway where the
power-lines crossed and
headed north. The track
passed through many gates
and over lots of hills which
gave spectacular views all
around. It really felt like
you were on top of the
world at times.

as we neared the Silver Valley Road Junction Andy led us up to one of the hills where we had a view
of Herberton in the distance as well as the track ahead of us and behind us. Only a few more
kilometres and several more hills to climb and then we reached the Irvinebank Road. Once we drove
into Herberton the group headed off home in different directions.
