International Market of Bamboo and Rattan 2014
1
Bamboo and rattan are widely distributed in Africa and Latin America regions. Bamboo and rattan play
an important role for the livelihood development and poverty alleviation in the rural areas of
developing countries. Bamboo and rattan can be utilized and produced into many products for local
people and global consumers, including bamboo poles and rattan cane, bamboo shoots, bamboo and
rattan handicrafts, bamboo-based panel products, bamboo charcoal, bamboo textile, bamboo paper
and pulp, bamboo tableware and kitchenware, bamboo and rattan bicycles and sport tools (surfboard,
etc.), bamboo and rattan furniture, bamboo decorating materials and buildings…The huge value chain
of bamboo and rattan industry contributes a lot to the trade development of bamboo and rattan
commodities in international market as well.
The total world market value (domestic and international) for bamboo and rattan products is
estimated to be about US$ 60 billion, according to the available data sources from UN ComTrade
database and National Statistics Authorities. The international trade of bamboo and rattan between
countries makes up only a small part of total trade of bamboo and rattan products-the majority is
conducted in domestic markets, with an annual international trade value of 2.5 billion approximately1.
World Exports of Bamboo and Rattan Products in 2014
Based on the UN ComTrade database, the world exports of bamboo and rattan products are
estimated at US$ 1,830 million in 20142. Bamboo and rattan products mainly conclude engineered
bamboo products, woven bamboo and rattan products, BR furniture/seats, BR raw materials and
bamboo shoots. Engineered bamboo products were the major products exported in 2014, with an
export value of US$ 548 million, accounting for 30% of the total. US$ 605 million of woven bamboo
and rattan products were exported, 33% of the world total, and just US$ 116 million of bamboo and
rattan raw materials, 6% of the total, were exported (figure 1).

Trends in the Trade of Bamboo and Rattan Products 2007-2014
International trade of bamboo and rattan has remained relatively stable since 2009, following a major drop in 2008. This drop is thought to have been due to the global financial crisis – similar falls are seen in other wood product categories (figure 2).
Figure 2 World exports of bamboo and rattan products 2007-2014
Major trends (figure 3)
x The proportion of the total of engineered bamboo products exported rose from 24% in 2009 to 30% in 2014, as did the value, from US$ 436 million in 2009 to US$ 548 million in 2014.
x The proportion of bamboo and rattan furniture products decreased from 21% in 2009 to 15% in 2014 - likely a direct result of “belt-tightening” in the USA and EU-27, the main international markets for furniture, due to the global economic downturn in 2008 and with the market yet to recover.
x The proportions of bamboo and rattan woven products remained steady, around 39% - they have traditional, long term, stable markets.
x The proportion of bamboo shoots increased from 10% to 16%, with a relatively stable trade value of US$ 290 million, despite the total overall reduction in value – the demand for shoots in Japan and South Korea remained steady.
x The proportion of raw resources exported remained stable – this is to be expected as resources are fixed, or increase slightly each year.

International Market of Bamboo and Rattan 2014
Bamboo and rattan trade by INBAR’s Member Countries
By the end of 2014, INBAR had 40 member countries, 39 of which are traditional bamboo and rattan producers and exporters from the developing areas in Asia, Africa and Latin-America. Eight members are listed in the top fifteen exporters of bamboo and rattan products, and are mostly from key bamboo and rattan resource and industry areas.
As shown in Figure 5, INBAR members collectively contributed about US$ 1,511 million of bamboo and rattan products to the international market in 2014, 83% of the world exports. The member’s market shares of preserved bamboo shoots, bamboo and rattan woven products and the industrialized bamboo products were over 80% of the world total in each category. The import value to INBAR members reached only US$ 176 million, accounting for only 11% of world imports. This is because most of producers and exporters of bamboo and rattan in the world are INBAR members, particularly China, Indonesia and Vietnam.
